Chapter 65: Someone Died!

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

Mr. Fuji had been waiting for Ash and his friends to reply, "We are the successors of great materialism and science; we don't believe in gods and ghosts," so he could follow the script.

"Then what's that white hand on your shoulder?"

Then he would watch as the group whirled around in a panic to look at their own shoulders, their faces pale with terror.

That would surely be a lot of fun.

This was a classic, time-honored tradition in Lavender Town. Scaring every single outsider like this brought the community together.

After all, Lavender Town had no other source of economic income besides the Pokémon Tower. The young people in the Town had all left to find work, leaving only the elderly and children behind.

So, Lavender Town’s current development strategy was to cultivate the atmosphere of a ghost town and vigorously promote the tourism industry.

They even paid hefty advertising fees to Vermilion Headlines every year, all to build up their haunted reputation and become famous throughout the Kanto Region, and even the World.

Now, countless paranormal enthusiasts considered it a sacred site, making regular pilgrimages.

However, Ash's response had completely stumped him, and for a moment, he didn't know how to continue.

But in the next second, Ash had already spoken first, throwing the same question back at him.

"Elder, do you believe there are ghosts in this world?"

The old man froze at the question, completely bewildered.

How the tables have turned?

Before he could respond, Ash suddenly pointed to the man’s shoulder, his eyes wide with terror.

"There's a Ghost Hand on your shoulder!!"

The white-browed, bald old man gave a scornful smile. An outsider trying to turn the tables and pull this trick on a veteran like him?

What Ghost Hand? That was just a line used to fool outsi—

"Pat."

His shoulder was suddenly patted, and an inexplicable chill spread through his chest. A dreadful thought surfaced in the old man's mind.

He stiffly turned his head. In his peripheral vision, he could indeed see a bizarre, purple-black claw resting on his shoulder.

But why was this claw so fat?

"Is there really a ghost?"

The old man was utterly horrified. It was true that Lavender Town had ghosts, but they were all inside the Pokémon Tower! There was no record of one ever escaping.

Danger!

As he turned his head completely, a purple shadow flashed past, followed by a pair of huge, blood-red eyes rushing toward him. His heart turned to ice.

"Ahhhh!!"

The old man stumbled back several steps, beads of sweat pouring down his face. He collapsed onto the ground, clutching his heart, clearly in a state of extreme shock.

"Ahahahaha!!"

Ash and his friends burst into triumphant laughter.

They had known from the start that the people in this Town liked to use the "There's a Ghost Hand on your shoulder" line to scare people. So, they had planned to immediately turn the tables on the first person who tried that nonsense on them.

Even an old man wasn't spared!

They shouldn't always be trying to bully honest folks from out of town!

"Geng-geng-geng-gar!!"

The owner of the ghost claw, Gengar, reverted to its original form. Its massive, chubby body twitched chaotically as it pointed at the old man, roaring with laughter.

Pranking Humans was its natural talent. The moment it heard Ash's plan, it was immediately on board, and the bond between them began to skyrocket.

"Huu... huu..."

But the white-browed old man on the ground seemed to have suffered some immense shock. His movements suddenly froze, he clutched his heart, and his eyes began to roll back into his head.

Then, he collapsed completely, motionless.

Ash: "?"

The trio's brows furrowed as a dreadful thought crept into their minds.

Don't tell me we actually screwed up?

Damn!

Do the people of this Ghost Town have such weak hearts?!

"Sir, are... are you okay?"

Seeing no movement for a long while, Ash and Misty began to panic. As the oldest of the three, Brock took a deep breath, quickly calmed himself, and strode over to the old man, his expression grim as he knelt.

He shakily held a finger under the old man's nose.

A full minute passed. There was no sign of breathing.

Danger!

This time, even Brock was starting to panic.

Did their first-ever counter-prank actually result in someone's death?!

Is this old man pulling a Faked Accident?!

Seeing that something was wrong, Nurse Joy from the Pokémon Center quickly ran over. When she saw the breathless old man, her expression became one of extreme alarm, and she shouted at them:

"What are you doing! This elder has always had a heart problem, you can't scare him!!"

The trio: "!"

He has a bad heart and he still goes around scaring people?!

"What do I do, what do I do? I only know how to treat Pokemon, and the doctor from this Town has been away seeing patients in the next town for the last two days!"

Nurse Joy paced back and forth anxiously. She was so tense that even Brock, with his Rock-Solid Will, was too abashed to try and flirt with her.

"There's no other choice! I've learned some basic first aid. This is cardiac arrest! We have to wake him up immediately, or he's really a goner!"

She hastily pulled a long syringe from behind the counter and filled it with a pale yellow liquid.

"This is Adrenaline. We have to give the old man a shot to get his heart started!"

With that, she handed the syringe to Ash.

Ash: "?"

"Of course, it's you! You caused this mess, so you fix it. I'm afraid of needles!!" Nurse Joy said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, urging Ash to hurry.

At this rate, if the man didn't wake up within three minutes, he'd probably be asleep forever.

"..."

Ash knelt on the ground, swallowed hard, and shakily raised the syringe, moving it over the old man's body.

Nurse Joy drew an 'X' over the old man's chest.

"Right here. Aim for his heart. You have to be precise, or he'll die on the spot from sudden cardiac arrest," Nurse Joy reminded him nervously.

Ash: "..."

The hand holding the syringe began to tremble, and even his vision started to blur and see double.

He was panicking big time.

Who would've thought a simple prank would run into someone with a heart condition?!

He'd rather just have Pikachu use Electrotherapy!

Beside him, Brock and Misty quickly steadied Ash's trembling body.

"Ash, you can do it!"

"If you can't, the three of us are going to be cellmates!"

They were panicking, too.

Seeing the old man's body, which seemed to be gradually stiffening, Ash finally steeled his gaze and forced himself to calm down.

I have to wake this old man up right now!

Damn!

He plunged the syringe toward the old man's chest, as if using all the strength he had in his life.

You have to wake up!!

"Boing~"

Upon contact with the old man's chest, the syringe suddenly wobbled as if it were a spring.

And the man on the ground suddenly snapped his eyes open, his face becoming exceptionally rosy as he cheered loudly:

"Surprise, motherfucker!"

Ash: "?"

"Scared shitless?"

The trio stared like puppets as Nurse Joy took back the syringe and bent the spring-loaded needle with her arm.

The old man also stood up from the ground, patted the dust off his clothes, and threw his head back to laugh.

"Ahahaha, the last time I pulled this routine was 10 years ago! Nurse Joy, my acting was pretty good, wasn't it!"

"Grandpa Fuji is such a Veteran Actor~"

Nurse Joy, at his side, covered her mouth and laughed in agreement.

The moment she saw Mr. Fuji fall, she had recognized the classic Faked Accident pose and immediately pulled out the special spring-loaded syringe.

The trio stood frozen on the spot, as if they hadn't heard a thing.

This was a traditional art of Lavender Town. Whenever someone managed to turn the tables, the script would immediately reverse, enacting the third-layer ploy of "I have a heart condition, please stab me in the heart."

There were even the fifth-layer and seventh-layer ploys after that.

When it came to these schemes, outsiders were still outsiders; they were completely outmatched.

"Ohohohohoho~"

Listening to the pair's unbridled laughter, Ash and his friends collapsed to the ground just as Mr. Fuji had done, looking completely broken.

This Town really was a ghost town.

The devil is among us, and hell is empty...
