Chapter 64: Unlocking the Achievement [Stab a God Once]

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

After leaving the Power Plant, they continued south. Traversing a stretch of Rocky Area and Hills, Ash and his companions stood on high ground, looking down at the view ahead. They could already see the general outline of a Town in the distance.

The Town was shrouded in a thick fog. Even though it was broad daylight, that particular area seemed to be enclosed by some kind of Barrier, making it very dim.

Most of the buildings in the Town were an eerie purple. Staring at them for too long even produced the hair-raising feeling that the Town itself was staring back at you.

It was creepily supernatural.

If Gary hadn't kicked the bucket, he probably would have loved this place.

Misty actually wanted to persuade them to take a detour. After all, there was no Gym here, and it was rumored to be haunted—not a place a beautiful girl should be. It would be better to just head west towards Saffron City.

However, Ash immediately refused her.

Although it was still a few days before the seventh day of mourning for Gary, he still wanted to go to the Pokémon Tower, which was famous throughout Kanto, to offer incense for his dear friend.

Just as the three of them finished their break and were about to set off again, the Pokedex suddenly emitted a mechanical sound, one that was quite loud and high-pitched.

Ash remembered hearing this same cheerful sound when he unlocked the "2H Trainer" status.

"Pokedex Beep. Congratulations, Trainer Ash, you have unlocked the Achievement: [Stab a God Once]."

He scratched his head, thinking to himself that the signal on this Pokedex really was terrible. *We've been walking for over half an hour, and you're only just now getting to the 'Stab a God Once' part?*

He really should ask Professor Oak to swap it for an HW Pokedex next time.

However, the name [Stab a God Once] was certainly a bit jarring. The three of them were all very intrigued and immediately decided to rest for another ten minutes to study this new Achievement.

Before, there were only the scattered achievements of [Food Chain], [Longevity Bond], and [Path of the Actor]. Had he unlocked a new one now?

The three of them fiddled with the Pokedex and, sure enough, saw several new achievement options.

"[Stab a God Once]: Defeat a Legendary Pokémon (1/1)."

Brock nodded. Although he hadn't completely defeated it, Ash had indeed earned Zapdos's recognition. Rounding up, it wasn't a stretch for him to get this title.

Actually, the long delay before the Pokedex got a signal wasn't its CPU's fault. It was just that the idea of a 2H-level Trainer suddenly defeating a Legendary Pokémon was too unbelievable.

No one would believe it if you told them.

It was truly troublesome for the CPU.

The trio looked again and discovered that the [Stab a God Once] achievement was only the first level, just like how Pikachu was currently a "Newcomer Trainee" within the greater [Path of the Actor] achievement.

"[Stab a God Thrice]: Defeat three Legendary Pokémon (1/3)."

"[Slaughtering Gods Like Dogs]: Defeat thirty Legendary Pokémon (1/30)."

The three of them: "..."

What an arrogant achievement!

Outrageous!

Weren't they afraid that broadcasting this title would get the Trainer ganged up on by Divine Beasts?

Speaking of which, could anyone really achieve Slaughtering Gods Like Dogs? Even the peak of all Trainers, those lofty Champions, probably couldn't do it, right?

The three of them continued to scroll down the screen and found that there were other branch achievements related to Legendary Pokémon.

"[Legend Rider]: Ride a Legendary Pokémon for 10 minutes (0/1)."

"[The Powerful Legendary Beast Trainer]: Catch one Legendary Pokémon (0/1)."

Moreover, above [The Powerful Legendary Beast Trainer] was an ultimate achievement.

"[The Notorious Legendary Beast Trainer]: Release all normal Pokemon, keeping only Legendary Pokémon, and possess 10 Legendary Pokémon."

Ash and the others: "..."

That did sound pretty disgusting.

These achievements were all supposed to be gradually revealed after Ash had collected 8 Badges and participated in the League, serving as new milestone objectives.

What was the fun in fighting people?

The real fun was obviously in catching Divine Beasts like they were chickens and kneading them in your hands.

Ash's eyes lit up. Hearing these titles, his heart surged with boundless passion and confidence as he gazed into the distance.

The future was full of promise!

Suddenly, a crafty look appeared in his eyes as he tentatively asked:

"Hey Pokedex, I've unlocked quite a few achievements now. Are you just going to give me empty titles, or can I get some actual rewards?"

After so many days, anyone who wasn't a complete fool could tell that this Pokedex was very strange. Maybe it really could give out rewards.

Ash wasn't greedy. A few Pokemon on the level of that Dragonite he met earlier would be enough.

Failing that, two Eggs would be great too. He could unlock [The Egg-Laying Rooster] achievement.

"Pokedex Beep."

The Pokedex began to whir, as if searching for something. Half a minute later, it made another sound.

"System update successful! Pokedex Beep. From now on, every time an achievement is unlocked, Trainer Ash will receive a special reward."

"Now distributing the reward for unlocking [Stab a God Once]. Please accept, Trainer."

Hearing this, Ash, Misty, and Brock were overjoyed. They actually got a reward just by asking?!

"Ahem, ahem."

A minute later, the Pokedex's voice had indeed changed. It was no longer mechanical but had become a human voice, starting with a classic cough.

Ash scratched his head. The voice was a bit hoarse, but it sounded somewhat familiar...

"Hello everyone, this is a Special Chapter of Professor Oak's lecture. I won't be doing my comedy routine today; instead, I'm going to sing a song for you all."

Reward: Professor Oak's Song. Effect: Cultivates body and mind.

Ash and the others: "???"

"A-one, a-two, a-three, go! My home is in the east—"

A flame seemed to shoot from Ash's eyes as his hand moved like lightning. It was faintly covered in a strange cyan light, creating booming sonic booms that nearly distorted the air itself.

At that moment, his hand speed reached the peak of his career, perhaps a height he would never reach again in his life.

He switched the Pokedex to vibrate.

"Pokedex, I don't need any more rewards in the future! Just delete all this stuff for me!"

Ash snarled.

Damn it, is this a reward or an attempt to murder me?!

He had heard Professor Oak sing before. Only that strange girl Blue could smile and clap along; he and Gary had fainted on the spot.

A total musical tyrant.

"Bzz bzz bzz."

Having been switched to vibrate, the Pokedex couldn't make a normal sound and could only buzz incessantly.

Seeing this, Ash grew even more furious, nearly smashing the Pokedex on the spot.

Damn!

This Pokedex must be something Professor Oak made specifically to mess with him, right!?

In the end, Ash shoved the Pokedex back into his pocket. The three of them, all looking as though they'd been force-fed something awful, walked toward the distant Town with dark expressions on their faces.

Lavender Town, a town adorned with a mysterious and noble purple.

In other words, a ghost town.

Here, if you haven't seen a few wandering ghosts, you can't even call yourself a resident of Lavender Town.

Even Ash, who had just arrived, felt the urge to take Brother Red out for a walk.

Red: "..."

(Felt offended.)

Upon arriving in a new Town, the first order of business wasn't anything else, but to head to the local Pokémon Center to rest and recuperate, taking advantage of the free services. The three of them followed the Map and walked straight there.

However, the townspeople they met along the way were not in a hurry like them. They all walked very slowly, strolling leisurely with their hands behind their backs.

The residents here were very laid-back.

What was even stranger was that the townspeople were mostly elderly or children; they saw almost no young or middle-aged adults.

The three of them didn't think much of it. The Town wasn't very large and had no particularly special buildings, aside from a tall, purple tower in the northeast that emanated a gloomy aura. That must be the Pokémon Tower.

But first, they needed to go to the Pokémon Center to restore some stamina.

As the trio pushed open the doors of the Pokémon Center, they coincidentally ran into a bald, white-browed old man who was coming out at the same time. He had a kind and benevolent face.

Seeing their unfamiliar faces, the old man asked with a smile, "You three aren't local residents, are you?"

"Just passing through." Ash replied honestly.

Hearing this, the old man wasn't surprised. A smile spread across his face as he asked mysteriously:

"Then do you believe that ghosts exist in this world?"

Ash replied without thinking:

"Of course. I've got one on me right now."

The old man: "?"

Why weren't these outsiders following the script?
