Chapter 66: The Orphan Pokémon

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

After the farcical scene concluded, Ash and his friends followed Mr. Fuji to a house.

This house was considerably larger than the surrounding residences, with excellent landscaping. From time to time, a few small Pokémon would run out of the doorway, laughing and playing.

They were all baby Pokémon, like Oddish, Bellsprout, and Venonat.

"We're here. This is my home. If you don't mind, please come in for a cup of cappuccino."

Mr. Fuji said with a smile.

Although he enjoyed playing pranks on outsiders, he considered it a friendly gesture.

He didn't care whether others found it friendly or not.

Entering the house, the inside looked like a large pet-rearing facility, divided into several areas where a dozen or so Pokémon were resting.

However, they were still all baby Pokémon.

"Mr. Fuji, are all of these your Pokémon?"

Mr. Fuji shook his head.

"These are Pokémon whose parents or human partners can no longer care for them. They were either separated or abandoned, so I opened a Pokémon House here to look after them until they are capable of living on their own."

In other words, it was an orphanage.

Lavender Town had the Pokémon Tower, where many departed spirits were buried. It was a city of death.

But death also brought new life, leading to an unusually high number of young Pokémon in Lavender Town, far more than in other towns.

Hearing this, the three of them looked at Mr. Fuji with expressions of respect.

Though his sense of humor was terrible and he was bald, his character was noble.

"So, what's your purpose for bringing us here?" Ash asked, puzzled.

Back at the Pokémon Center, Mr. Fuji had mentioned he needed their help with something.

Could it be that he wanted them to take a few baby Pokémon for free?

"Wuu wuu!!"

Before Mr. Fuji could speak, a low cry came from one side of the house. Immediately after, a small, brown Pokémon charged out, brandishing a large bone club.

Before the three could get a clear look at it, they heard Mr. Fuji shout, "Quick, stop it!" and Ash subconsciously moved to block the small creature's path.

"Wuu wuu!!"

Seeing someone blocking its way, the small brown creature showed no mercy. It raised its large bone club, leaped violently, and swung it viciously at Ash's knee.

I'll jump up and smash your kneecap!

"Clang!"

A metallic clang rang out.

"Boing~"

This was followed by the sound of a spring. Ash's leg shot out forcefully, kicking the small beast several meters away.

Ash scratched his knee, bewildered. Why did his leg kick out on its own?

"Wuuu wuuu..."

The small creature had clearly just been born. A single kick from Ash had rendered it unable to battle, and it lay collapsed on the ground.

Only then did the three get a good look. The small creature was earthy-yellow all over, and on its small head, it wore a clearly oversized bone helmet that covered its entire face.

"Cubone, the Orphan Pokémon. It is an orphan from birth. It wears the skull of its deceased parent on its head. The bone it holds is a high-quality ingredient for soup."

The Pokédex automatically reported.

A skull...?

The three were intrigued. Ash was even more eager to try, attempting to lift the skull off. But as soon as he made a move, the Cubone had already regained consciousness and was brandishing its large bone club furiously, pointing it at Ash.

"Calm down, they are guests."

Mr. Fuji held Cubone in his arms and gently soothed it. After a bit of work, the little one gradually settled down.

But its expression remained aggressive.

"Hehe, this is the favor I wanted to ask of you."

Mr. Fuji placed Cubone on the ground and began to explain.

"I heard at the Pokémon Center earlier that you're heading to the Pokémon Tower, right? Could I trouble you to take him with you?"

Ash nodded. That was a small matter. But Mr. Fuji's body was quite robust; he could even fake an injury to scare people. Couldn't he take it himself?

Did he have rheumatism in his legs?

"Hehe, I would like to take it up myself, but I'm not capable enough. This tower is not simple..." Mr. Fuji said awkwardly.

If he hadn't stopped being a Trainer for so many years, he wouldn't be in such an embarrassing situation.

Hearing this, the three exchanged glances. A local couldn't climb the local tower?

That was indeed quite laughable.

"Wait, Mr. Fuji, let me ask a question first."

Misty suddenly interjected.

"Are there really ghosts in the tower? I don't mean Pokémon, I mean real ghosts!"

She used to be afraid of Ghost-type Pokémon, but after spending the last few days with Gengar, she had lost her fear and even started to think Ghost-type Pokémon were quite cute.

Especially Gengar, so chubby and adorable.

But if they were real ghosts...

She suddenly shivered!

"Hehe, of course, there are..."

Mr. Fuji chuckled and slowly explained, "The Pokémon Tower is a burial ground for the departed. Not only does it house Ghost-type Pokémon, but quite a few real ghosts also appear. I have no reason to lie to you about this."

Whether human or Pokémon, if they carried a powerful obsession in life and were then buried in a place with extremely heavy yin energy, it was perfectly reasonable for them to transform into a ghost.

However, over time, or through the prayers and remembrance of relatives and friends, these ghosts would eventually fade away from the world.

"I just don't know what's happened recently, but at the passage from the fourth to the fifth floor of the Pokémon Tower, a ghost with powerful resentment seems to have appeared, blocking the way."

He frowned.

The Pokémon Tower had five floors in total. The first floor was a place for the Miko to worship and pray, and it was said to have a barrier, so wild Pokémon rarely appeared.

From the second floor onwards, Ghost-type Pokémon and real ghosts gradually began to inhabit the area.

And it seemed that because of that powerful ghost, even these wild Ghost-type Pokémon had started to become restless.

"This Cubone wants to go up the Pokémon Tower no matter what, but the Trainers in town are not skilled enough to take it up there."

Mr. Fuji sighed helplessly. In truth, he didn't know what Cubone's purpose was either.

But letting it remain agitated here wasn't a solution, and if Cubone went up by itself, it would be a lost cause.

In fact, another Trainer from out of town had come this morning, about the same age as Ash, but he supposedly had something important to do and directly refused the request.

He could only turn his attention to Ash and his friends.

Looking at the plump Electric Mouse on his shoulder, and a plump Gengar, both raised to be so fat and healthy, their strength couldn't be too low, right?

"If you can take Cubone up the tower, I can give you a reward. On the fifth floor of the Pokémon Tower, there is a strange stone I collected during my travels to other regions in my youth. It's said to be quite an incredible stone in that region now."

Mr. Fuji added a final sentence.

Hearing this, Ash's eyes lit up. Ignoring Cubone's struggles, he picked it up and held it in his arms, saying with a laugh:

"Haha, Old Sir, you're being too formal. My only reason for helping is to fulfill Cubone's wish!"

"Oh, oh, in that case..."

"Ahaha, but since you've already offered, it would be disrespectful of me not to accept!"

"Oh, oh, actually I don't feel disrespect..."

"Haha, Brock, Misty, let's go!!"

Ash abruptly turned his head, cutting Mr. Fuji off. Without waiting for him to finish, he tucked Cubone under one arm and Pikachu under the other, and led the two towards the Pokémon Tower.

He never stood on ceremony.

After Ash and his friends left, the smile on Mr. Fuji's face suddenly vanished, his expression turning exceptionally grave.

"Strange, how does that kid have the scent of that Pokémon on him?!"

As the creator of that Pokémon, he could smell that scent even through a Poké Ball.

His brow furrowed deeply, then he shook his head forcefully.

"Impossible, there's no way that Pokémon could be connected to a novice Trainer..."

After thinking for a long time, Mr. Fuji's gaze hardened with determination. He hurried into the house and, dialing a number from memory, made a call.

The call connected.

"Oh, is that you, Fuji? It's been a long time since you've called! I hear you're an orphanage director now?"

A lighthearted laugh came from the other end of the line. Judging by the voice, it seemed to be another talkative old man.

"Cut the chatter. Do you remember that Pokémon we created together back then?" Mr. Fuji asked in a low voice.

The person on the other end was stunned for a moment, then asked, puzzled:

"Huh? Didn't you say you'd never get involved with that Pokémon again for the rest of your life? You even released all your Pokémon. Why the sudden interest today?"

Mr. Fuji took a deep breath and lamented:

"I think I may have met it..."
