Chapter 63: I'm an NPC, You Can't Catch Me
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)
After using a powerful Discharge, Zapdos's body stiffened as it entered its cooldown period. Combined with the extremely close distance to Gengar, it was completely unable to dodge, its large eyes wide and round.
It never expected Gengar to have another trick up its sleeve.
The energy Gengar had consumed for its previous Thunder Punch was barely a flicker of energy, its purpose merely to draw in the immense power of the surrounding lightning. In reality, it hadn't used much energy at all.
"Use Ice Punch!!"
"Geng!!"
A bone-piercing chill emanated as Gengar threw a punch, slamming it heavily into Zapdos's chest. The powerful force and the subsequent icy wave struck the defenseless Zapdos, making it wail in pain mid-air.
"BOOM!!"
Zapdos was sent flying backward like a cannonball!
The majestic Legendary Pokémon, once high and mighty, was hammered out of the sky by Gengar. It crashed into a corner of the Power Plant, kicking up a massive cloud of dust. Many nearby machines even ruptured and exploded, filling the entire area with smoke and dust, accompanied by continuous roars.
Brock and Misty were both dumbfounded by this scene.
At most, they thought Ash would only last a few turns against Zapdos. They had never imagined he could actually knock it down!
Seeing that Ash himself was stunned, Misty quickly shouted:
"Don't just stand there stunned! Hurry up and throw a Poké Ball!!"
"Right, right! Quickly have your Gengar follow up with Mean Look, then have your Bulbasaur hit it with a Poison Powder, Sleep Powder, and Stun Spore combo!"
Brock muttered slyly.
If Ash could really catch Zapdos today, he would absolutely make the headlines in Vermilion City tomorrow and be selected for this year's list of the top ten most promising newcomers!
And as his mentor, he might even get his name listed after Ash's!
That would be sweet!
"Ah, oh, is it time to catch it?"
Ash snapped out of it and subconsciously took out a Poké Ball.
To be honest, though, he was a little hesitant about whether to catch Zapdos.
The next second, a hurricane erupted from the center of the smoke and dust, blowing it all away. The yellow, legendary lightning bird once again broke through the dust and soared into the sky.
The expression on its Raikou-like face had changed slightly, but it was hardly bothered.
Legendary Pokémon might lack other skills, but their stamina is definitely maxed out. A single Ice Punch was nowhere near enough to render it unable to battle.
A chunk of ice still clung to its chest. It then flapped its wings, and a scorching Heat Wave washed over it, easily melting the ice.
"Geng Geng!!"
Seeing this, Gengar began to move again, a chill condensing on both its fists.
If one Ice Punch wasn't enough, it would just land a few more.
*I'm definitely going to flatten you, you spiky-feathered bird, today!*
This Gengar had always been very eager to fight!
But just as it was about to charge forward, Zapdos suddenly flapped its wings and shrieked. The piercing cry and powerful aura forcibly stopped Gengar in its tracks, creating a very awkward silence.
"Jii Jii!!"
Although it hadn't reached the point where it could communicate with humans telepathically, that one cry instantly made the three of them understand its meaning.
*The fight's off. Battle over. I acknowledge you.*
In other words: *I am an NPC now. Unless I choose to go with you, you cannot catch me.*
The three of them: "..."
Its attitude was quite domineering.
Seeing this, Ash, who was down below, could only give a helpless, bitter smile and put away his Poké Ball. His gaze drifted to the Pikachu at his feet, who was silently slacking off while hugging the Gaudy Gold Poké Ball.
*Whatever, I already have a thunder deity,* he thought. *Catching Zapdos would just be redundant.*
*In the future, if I encounter a God of Fire or God of Water, maybe I can catch them.*
Besides, keeping a Pokémon that looked like Gary around... he was afraid he'd have nightmares.
"Jii Jii!!"
Zapdos cried out again, and with a flick of its spiky wings, it suddenly tossed out a green stone.
With quick reflexes, Ash shot out his hand and deftly caught the stone.
*This stupid bird!* Ash cursed inwardly. With that much force, anyone else would probably have been killed by the stone.
He opened his palm to take a closer look. It was a semi-transparent green stone with a lightning bolt symbol etched inside. He could faintly feel a slight numbing sensation where it met his palm.
"That's a Thunder Stone, isn't it?" Misty pointed out.
"A Thunder Stone? Is it an item that can increase the combat power of Electric-type Pokémon?"
Ash nodded. It was one thing not to be able to catch the Pokémon after clearing a dungeon, but there should at least be some spoils of war. That was fair.
Without a second thought, he tossed it to the Pikachu beside him.
"Here's a Thunder Stone. Go play with it."
Pikachu: "?"
It scrambled back several steps in panic, its fur standing on end.
*Damn it!*
"What's wrong, Pikachu? You want to play dodgeball with me?"
Ash, completely baffled, picked up the Thunder Stone and weighed it slightly in his hand.
Normally, Pikachu loved playing a game of catch with him. He would throw a stone, and Pikachu would smack it away with Iron Tail.
At this thought, Ash smiled lightly. Ash's arm tensed slightly, and he hurled the Thunder Stone forward. It shot out like a cannonball, even creating sonic booms and shockwaves in the air.
Pikachu: "!!!"
*Danger!*
It hastily used Quick Attack to dodge. The Thunder Stone grazed past its body, moving so fast it even dented a machine behind it.
"Pika pika pika!!"
Afterward, Pikachu started berating him irritably, jumping up and down.
It was one thing now, but it was terrified that one day while it was sleeping, Ash would secretly press the Thunder Stone to its forehead. It would wake up to find it had suddenly become an overweight, "African" Electric Mouse, ten pounds heavier.
Ash: "?"
He scratched his head. *This Pikachu slacked off today, and it's still this grumpy?*
*Doesn't it feel any shame?*
Brock and Misty: "..."
They felt it was necessary to have a talk with Ash. The thought of a chubby Raichu trying to act cute on his shoulder... they couldn't bear to imagine it.
"Um, Ash, actually, the Thunder Stone is Pikachu's evolution item. It will evolve if it touches it."
Ash scratched his head, confused. "That's not right. I remember the Pokédex clearly said it was an Electric Amplifier, right?"
The Pokédex seemed to have recognized a keyword and automatically announced:
"Pokédex Beep. Pikachu's evolution item: has always been the Thunder Stone."
Ash: "?"
*Is my memory starting to fail?*
"Jii Jii!!"
The Zapdos in the sky cried out again, signaling that the dungeon run was over and they could leave now.
As a proud Legendary Pokémon, it had to keep flying in the sky until the humans left.
Even though it was tiring, a Legendary Pokémon that couldn't fly would be an absolute disgrace.
Ash put away the Thunder Stone, and the Gengar levitating in mid-air slowly descended.
Its chubby body landed on the ground. It first glanced at Ash, but then quickly turned its back, fidgeting with its two small, stout hands in front of it, its dark purple face unable to help but blush.
"Gengar, you did great!"
Ash flashed a wide grin and used his Talk-no-jutsu:
"I don't expect you to acknowledge me right away, but I'll always be here to support you! You're my friend!"
Gengar's old face immediately flushed red. It finally turned around coyly, raising its two small, stout hands.
"Geng geng geng geng (If you can find me a female Gengar, I'll acknowledge you)."
It held up one finger on its left hand and bent two fingers on its right hand into a circle, looking at Ash with a burning gaze.
Seeing this, Brock's eyes flashed with a sagely light, and he ventured a guess:
"That seems to be slang from a certain... special community. It means: 'I'm a 1, looking for a 0.'"
Misty asked, confused, "What special community?"
Brock's dark face immediately flushed red. He quickly shook his head, indicating he didn't know either and was just talking nonsense.
*Damn it!* If he explained it, wouldn't that imply he was part of that special community!?
"What are you guys talking about? Gengar and I have a bond, I can understand it perfectly!"
Ash quickly interrupted them, looking intently at the blushing, bashful Gengar, and said with a confident smile:
"You want a new vacuum cleaner for a nest, right!"
Gengar: "?"
Ash thumped his chest and declared in a low voice:
"I promise you, when we get to the next town, I'll buy you a new HW model vacuum cleaner! That's a promise from a Pokémon Master!"
After saying this, Ash's mouth felt a little itchy. He felt that the phrase had rolled off his tongue so smoothly, as if he had said the same thing to someone else before.
*"Who was it?"*
He then chuckled.
*If I can't even remember, then it must not be important.*
