Chapter 121: James's Kick

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

West of Saffron City, on Route 7, was a wide, open expanse of rolling hills.

After walking for several hours, Ash and his group finally stopped. Seeing that the sun was directly overhead, they found a shady spot to rest and have lunch.

Nearby, the keen-eyed Brock quickly set up a table and laid out the food.

"This is a new dish I've been developing, Five-Nut Rice Balls."

He set out a row of rice balls. The white rice was wrapped in nori seaweed, and they looked delicious, with nothing out of the ordinary about them.

"Five-nut? In Pallet Town, five-nut filled rice balls are our favorite."

Ash's eyes lit up. He grabbed a rice ball and took a huge bite. The five-nut fragrance filled his mouth, leaving him very satisfied. While still stuffing his face, he gave Brock a thumbs-up.

He'd heard that Pallet Town had recently launched an upgraded version of the five-nut mooncake.

The Ten-Nut Mooncake!

If he weren't so busy becoming a Pokémon Master, he'd definitely go back home to give it a try.

"Five-nut? We in Cerulean City prefer chocolate rice balls..."

Misty picked up a rice ball with a hint of disgust, carefully separating the filling to eat only the rice on the outside.

Brock also picked one up and started eating. Although people from Pewter City actually preferred Golden Throat Lozenge-filled rice balls, five-nut was also acceptable.

"Munch, munch..."

The three began to eat. Just then, a brownish-yellow Pokémon appeared from out of nowhere and quietly approached them.

Its body had no distinction between head and torso; it was just a round head with slender limbs on its sides and a long tail. Its entire body was covered in light yellow fur, which turned brown at the tips of its hands, feet, and tail.

On its head was a pair of somewhat resolute-looking eyes and a round, pig-like snout.

Seeing the three staring at it blankly, the Pokémon showed no fear. It walked right up and held out a hand to Brock.

"What's wrong? Do you like five-nut rice balls too?"

Brock, still chewing on his own rice ball, was baffled but impressed. He casually grabbed another one from the table and offered it to the Pokémon.

It happily took the rice ball, turned, and with a few small hops, jumped onto a small elevated platform not far from the trio. It sat down and began to gnaw at the rice ball.

"Squeak~"

Domesticated Pokémon usually adapt to eating specially made Pokémon food, but a wild Pokémon like this one wasn't so picky. It could eat human food with great relish.

Seeing this, Ash quickly wiped his hands and took out his Pokedex, scanning the Pokémon that was nine parts monkey and one part pig.

"Pokedex Beep. Mankey, the Introverted Pokémon. It has a gentle nature and is not easily angered. Even if you throw a rock at it, it will only run away and will not attack humans."

The Pokedex reported automatically.

"A Fighting Type Pokémon, and an unexpectedly gentle one at that?"

Fighting Pokémon are usually extroverted and aggressive; an introverted one is quite rare.

Ash's eyes shone. He happened to be in need of a Pokémon that could get physical. Without hesitating, he whipped out a dark-colored Poké Ball. It was inlaid with two crimson-gold, gilt patterns, giving it a very noble and magnificent appearance.

A Luxury Ball!

It's said that Pokémon caught with this type of Poké Ball have their Affection grow more easily.

These were the three Luxury Balls the Silph Co. President had given him right at the start. It would be a waste not to use them.

While the Mankey was still completely focused on eating its five-nut rice ball, the corner of Ash's mouth curled up, and he suddenly threw the Luxury Ball in his hand.

"I choose you, Luxury Ball!!"

"Squeak!!"

At that moment, the Mankey jerked its head up, a cold glint in its eyes. It leaped from the elevated platform and threw the half-eaten rice ball in its hand.

"Swoosh!"

Even the red capture beam from the Luxury Ball seemed somewhat noble as it sucked the rice ball inside.

"I caught... half a rice ball?"

Ash stared, dumbfounded, at the rice ball inside the half-open Luxury Ball that had fallen back into his hand. He was utterly baffled.

"Hey, Ash, look up!"

Brock's warning made him quickly raise his head. The Mankey on the elevated platform, which had seemed so docile, had completely changed. Its fists were clenched in an attack stance, veins bulged on its forehead, and its eyes looked like they were about to catch on fire.

It looked absolutely furious.

"Is it because its meal was interrupted...?" Misty said, a little uncertain.

Hearing this, Ash was so angry he nearly smashed his Pokedex. What happened to "gentle and not easily angered"? What about "won't get mad even if you throw a rock at it"?

Why, after all this time, would I, Ash, still believe the Pokedex's nonsense?!

"Squeak!"

The angry Mankey suddenly launched an attack. It kicked off the ground and pounced at Ash, its movements agile and its speed incredibly fast.

Seeing it aiming straight for his head, Ash quickly bent backward, using his powerful core strength to dodge the frontal assault.

But when he straightened back up, he felt a sudden coolness on his head, as if something was missing.

It wasn't that his wig had fallen off, but his hat.

Ash quickly focused his eyes and saw the Mankey wearing his red and white cap. It was fiddling with it with both arms, its eyes rolled upwards, looking comically pleased.

"Ah, my precious hat!!"

Ash immediately flew into a panic. His face flushed red as he lunged forward, trying to get his hat back.

As the saying goes, a troubled mind leads to clumsy actions.

With his mental fortitude in chaos, he was easily dodged by the Mankey, and he face-planted into the ground, kicking up clouds of dust.

"Squeak~"

The Mankey, now wearing the hat, seemed to be in a much better mood. It made a funny face at Ash.

"Aaaahhh, my hat!!"

The two watching from the sidelines had looks of utter confusion.

"Is that hat really so precious?"

"I thought it was some cheap knockoff."

Hearing this, Ash's eyes widened. He whipped his head around and retorted:

"This hat is an ultra-rare collector's item! It's the Commemorative Hat for the 100th anniversary of the Pokémon League! Only 100 were made worldwide!"

Brock scratched his head.

"Was there really an event like that? Ash, you didn't get scammed, did you?"

"I remember now. I tried sending in postcards for the sweepstakes when I was a kid, but I never won. Ash, you're really lucky."

Misty's expression changed. She thought to herself, *So Ash is one of those absurdly lucky people.*

"Hmph, of course my luck is top-notch!"

Ash calmed down a little and said with a smug smile:

"Back then, I had to mail in ten thousand postcards just to win one!!"

Misty and Brock: "..."

That's just ballot stuffing.

There were over a hundred thousand participants in that sweepstakes, and the prize was one hundred limited-edition hats. Rounding up, that meant a one-in-a-thousand chance of winning.

And yet Ash had to send ten thousand entries to win one?

Could it be that the organizers took pity on him, afraid his sanity would snap, so they just gave him one for free?

While the three were talking, the Mankey had already wandered quite a distance away, happily strolling about with the wobbly hat on its head.

Ash and the others quickly packed their things and gave chase. Just then, three shadows shot out from the bushes in front of the Mankey. A closer look revealed a red-haired woman, a blue-haired man, and an upright-walking Meowth.

It was the Team Rocket trio.

"We've finally caught up to you, twerps!"

The trio's gaze was fixed on Ash's group and the Electric Mouse on his shoulder.

"Squeak~"

The Mankey paid them no mind, humming a little tune as it casually walked past the three.

It caught Jessie's attention. She asked in confusion:

"What is that thing?"

"Just some small fry, meow." Meowth said dismissively, waving a paw.

"Hmph, our target is that Abnormal Variant Pikachu, not some common-as-dirt small fry."

With that, James delivered a swift kick to the Mankey's rear, sending it flying more than three meters away. It landed headfirst in the bushes like a planted spring onion.
