Chapter 1208: The Comet and Jirachi, Both Gone

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

"This is...?"

Sensing someone else on the platform, Ash quickly slipped into the cave and hid behind a pile of stones.

Lifting his head, he saw a man and a woman, who looked to be in their early twenties, standing on the machine platform at the entrance of the open-air cave.

The man had an elegant face and wore his hair in a slicked-back style, the same as Maxie's. He was dressed in a white suit, like a magician's.

The woman, meanwhile, had wavy blonde hair and wore the provocative, tight-fitting outfit of a magician's assistant.

"Butler, maybe we should just stop... I have a feeling this is going to cause some kind of terrible incident."

The woman, named Diane, looked worried.

"Diane, you have to believe in me! I will succeed!!"

But now, at the final moment, Butler had thrown all caution to the wind, his eyes gleaming with a fanatical light.

Two years ago, he was driven out of Team Magma like a stray dog.

Over the past two years, using his old skills in stage magic, Butler had reinvented himself as a magician, traveling and performing throughout the Hoenn Region while secretly searching for a new source of power.

There was nothing wrong with his device... The source of energy must be insufficient!

After all, to create a Groudon as tall as a small mountain, he couldn't possibly rely on Team Magma's 220-volt current, could he?

He had to seek greater power!

While passing through Mossdeep City, the legend of Jirachi naturally reached his ears.

"This is it!"

As if it were destiny, Butler knew this was what he had been searching for.

And now, on the device's platform, lay a purplish-brown rock covered in spiky stone pillars.

This was the “rock-egg cocoon” he had forcibly excavated from that white rock.

This purplish-brown rock was like an unhatched Pokémon egg, and sleeping inside was the legendary Jirachi!

"According to legend, Jirachi will only choose to establish telepathic communication and awaken when it encounters a trainer with whom it shares a destiny..."

Butler shook his head. He had excavated it by force, and it had offered no mental feedback.

But it didn't matter. He had no need to form a bond or communicate with Jirachi; he simply wanted to borrow its power.

"Jirachi only awakens for seven days every thousand years... But within those seven days, it can display the divine ability to grant any wish!!"

Butler placed this purplish-brown stone into a recess in the device.

This was where the electrical energy was originally meant to be stored.

In another recess, he once again placed that Groudon's claw fragment he had picked up from who-knows-where.

Borrowing this divine ability, he would surely be able to create the great Groudon this time!

"Diane, tonight is the night I succeed! I will make all those who looked down on me get on their knees and apologize!!"

Butler gripped the blonde woman tightly, his face gradually contorting into a sinister expression.

Tonight was the once-in-a-millennium night when the comet crossed the starry sky!

He would use the awakened Jirachi to channel the comet's power.

Both streams of power would be channeled into this Groudon's claw fragment...

When the time came, he wanted more than just to return to his position as Team Magma's chief researcher.

He would take this Groudon, created entirely by him, flatten the entire Team Magma base, and crush that man who looked down on him, Maxie, flat underfoot!

"Butler..."

Looking at her boyfriend, who no longer resembled the beloved man who had once performed magic shows with her, fear rose in Diane's heart.

But for now, she could only brace herself and go along with it.

"This guy... so flashy,"

Hiding behind the pile of rubble, Ash couldn't help but mutter.

He strained his ears to eavesdrop, but their words were intermittent, and he couldn't quite figure out what they were talking about.

He glanced sideways at the spiky, purplish-brown rock on the platform above, which was about the size of a Pokémon egg.

"Is that Jirachi's true form?"

The white rock didn't respond, so he just broke it open directly...

This guy's methods are certainly simple and brutal.

The sky gradually grew dark.

Just as he was hesitating over what to do, Ash's expression suddenly changed.

Because a gentle telepathy had suddenly emerged in his mind.

It was like the voice of a little girl, only five or six years old, just beginning to babble and learn to talk.

"Can you help me~?"

Ash shivered. He looked left and right, but his gaze ultimately returned to the platform above.

Was that Jirachi speaking to him?

Its telepathic ability was actually a bit stronger than his Latias's.

In response, Ash quickly sent back a thought of his own.

He frequently conversed with Boss Mewtwo, so his own telepathic responses were quite fluent.

"Tell me more. How can I help you?"

After a moment, the gentle telepathy resumed.

"I don't like this human~! He's a bad person~! Please get me out of here~!"

Jirachi cried out in a coaxing tone.

Hearing this, Ash immediately felt emboldened.

He'd heard it himself; Jirachi was the one who initiated the request.

But how should he snatch it away? Should he just brazenly leap out?

Soon, night fell.

Down below, Ash was still planning his grand entrance.

In the vast starry sky, against the dark canopy of space, a large spot of light shimmering with white light was rapidly streaking across the sky.

*Swoosh!*

Trailing a long tail behind it, it was a truly beautiful sight.

"It's here! The once-in-a-millennium comet!"

Butler's eyes lit up. His hand was already on the switch, his body trembling with anticipation.

Soon, so soon, he would succeed!

Now, he just had to wait for the comet to pass roughly overhead; that would be the perfect moment to activate the machine.

"Butler, look! What is that?!"

Diane's words made Butler shudder, and he quickly followed her gaze.

He saw the comet streaking across the distant starry sky, leaving a beautiful trail of light.

But upon closer inspection, he could see something apparently following behind the comet.

Its form blended perfectly with the blackness of space, only occasionally revealing a faint golden shimmer.

Like a long, serpentine demon god, it rapidly chased after the comet.

Finally, it seemed to open its cavernous maw.

And in a single gulp, it swallowed the entire comet meteorite.

Even though it was happening at an unknown distance across the vastness of space, a sound seemed to reach both of their ears.

"*Chomp, chomp!*"

The next moment, the starry sky dimmed. The meteorite had vanished completely before it had even finished half its trajectory.

It was as if it had never appeared at all.

The "black giant snake" that had been following it also vanished completely.

Butler: "???"

What the hell?!

Where's my comet?!!

"Forget it! I'll just have to rely on Jirachi's power!!"

Butler steeled his heart. The comet's power had suddenly vanished; now, all he could rely on was the power of Jirachi's wish.

But when he lowered his head to look at the device he was so proud of...

Groudon's claw fragment was still there.

But the purplish-brown, spiky stone cocoon had vanished.

In its place, a large Sitrus Berry was stuck in the recess.

Butler: "???"

Where's my Jirachi?!
