Chapter 767: The Shit-Stirrer
The massive melee between the three corps had long since made it difficult to distinguish friend from foe. One moment, members of the Yellow Lantern Corps and the Green Lantern Corps might be teaming up against the Red Lantern Corps; the next, the Yellow and Green Lanterns would erupt into a fierce battle.
Betrayal became commonplace; all three corps harbored hatred for one another.
Laira completely ignored the Red Lantern Corps, frantically attacking members of the Yellow Lantern Corps. Her friends and family had all died at their hands. When it came to hatred, no one in the entire Green Lantern Corps bore more than she did.
Laira furiously drained the energy from her Green Lantern Ring, and it was soon depleted.
"Sinestro!!!"
With bloodshot eyes, Laira used her last bit of energy to lunge at her enemy, with no thought of retreating to recharge.
"Hahaha, I like the look in your eyes!"
Atrocitus laughed heartily and tossed a Red Lantern Ring toward Laira.
"Wear it, and you will gain the power for vengeance!"
"Don't!"
"Laira, come back!"
Tomar-Re and Kilowog's expressions darkened as they shouted.
But Laira didn't hesitate. She threw away her Green Lantern Ring. The Red Lantern Ring, floating in the vacuum of space, seemed to sense something, transforming into a streak of red light and swiftly flying before her.
"Laira of Sector 112, you have great rage in your heart. Welcome to the Red Lantern Corps!"
Laira had long been consumed by hatred and rage. In that instant, she felt the Red Lantern Ring before her was a perfect fit, as if it were beating in time with her own heart.
The red ring slipped onto her finger. Driven by her rage, Laira defected from the Green Lantern Corps and embraced the Red Lanterns.
Atrocitus let out a wild laugh. He was like a victorious general, or more accurately, a tyrant gleefully watching a farce. He willingly stepped back, leaving Sinestro to Laira.
"The Green Lantern Corps is already riddled with holes! The foolish Guardians have caused the great Green Lantern Corps to fall apart!"
Atrocitus surveyed the battlefield with a savage grin. "The Yellow Lanterns, the Red Lanterns, all born from a hatred for the Green Lanterns. The Guardians have made the most outstanding contribution to the outbreak of the Spectrum War! To commend your foolishness, I have decided to sentence you to—Death!"
"Death is your final destination! The darkness you fear so much is what truly belongs to you!"
Atrocitus grabbed a Green Lantern and tore him in half, bathing himself in blood. It was an exhilarating release. The scalding blood on his body grew redder and more voluminous.
Clearly, witnessing Laira betray the Green Lantern Corps to join him was an incredibly satisfying event for Atrocitus.
He knew this was just an insignificant beginning. In the coming Blackest Night, the collapse of the Green Lantern Corps was only a matter of time. The sins the Guardians had committed over the past ten billion years would finally receive their bloody judgment.
And he, Atrocitus, whom the Guardians had slandered as an "ancient demon," would be more than happy to be the executioner and kill every last one of those Guardians.
The three Lantern Corps descended into an ever-fiercer chaotic battle. People were dying every moment, forcing the Guardians to once again lift the restriction on "lethal force" for the Green Lantern Rings, permitting all Green Lanterns to kill.
Sinestro coldly evaded Laira. He had no interest in the crazed woman, only attacking her perfunctorily as if he were waiting for something.
He knew that some people would definitely be unable to resist taking advantage of the three-way chaos to do something more.
...
Any ambitious schemer places immense importance on the existence of a shit-stirrer, as such a creature is adept at turning a calm situation into a complete mess.
Starscream and Larfleeze shouldered the heavy responsibility of being the shit-stirrers. The two of them traversed the vast universe, quietly waiting for something.
On their fingers, each wore an Orange Lantern Ring.
Larfleeze would look down at his own Orange Lantern Ring, then over at the one on Starscream's hand, nearly drooling.
"I propose we swap rings. That would be fair," Larfleeze suggested.
Starscream replied, "Get lost!"
Larfleeze didn't listen, shamelessly staring at Starscream's ring while chattering endlessly, "Lord Larfleeze is the most suitable user, I can feel it..."
Every Lantern Ring actually had the ability to create an energy-based duplicate, identical in function and appearance. However, this duplicate ring drew its power entirely from the original.
The Orange Lantern Ring Larfleeze currently held was a subordinate copy created by the ring on Starscream's hand.
Of course, the greedy Larfleeze was unwilling to use a second-hand item. He longed to trade with Starscream—he would use the original, and give Starscream the copy.
Naturally, if he ever got his hands on the original Orange Lantern, the first thing he would do is take back the second-hand ring and destroy it... A greedy person only wants to possess everything and would never give up so much as a single hair.
But Starscream wasn't a fool. The only reason he, equally greedy, was willing to create an energy ring and lend it to Larfleeze was due to a lack of manpower. This greedy fellow had already decided that the moment the mission was complete, he would take down Larfleeze and reclaim the second-hand ring to destroy it.
Larfleeze was still chattering away, looking for an opportunity to snatch the ring. Starscream couldn't be bothered with him and cautiously observed his surroundings.
The two of them bore the great responsibility of being shit-stirrers. To this end, Starscream had even managed to get the Orange Lantern Ring back.
Currently, they were the only two in the prime universe who possessed an Orange Lantern Ring. If they didn't participate in the war, the Spectrum War would never reach its peak, and the Blackest Night would never arrive.
They weren't Guardians. Their highest mission was to push for the arrival of the Blackest Night by any means necessary. As for whether things would collapse due to their overconfidence... Starscream stated that was Tony's mission, not his.
"Shut up, you idiot! We've arrived at Odym. Prepare for battle!"
Starscream slapped Larfleeze across the face, using action to shut the incorrigibly greedy creature up.
Larfleeze was furious, but after a moment's thought, he swallowed his anger and asked, "Just the two of us? How many people did you take out? How many Orange Lantern soldiers did you create?"
"I've killed every single one of the most heinous criminals in the entire Cybertron Galaxy. It's more than enough to form a legion. As for you... you're still a commander without an army, not a single soldier to your name."
Starscream sneered.
Larfleeze's expression changed drastically. He grabbed Starscream's leg and shrieked, "You bastard! How could you! The legion's soldiers should be shared between us! Shouldn't we divide them on a one-to-nine basis—you get one, I get nine!!!"
Thump!
Starscream kicked Larfleeze away with a look of disgust. He then turned to face the planet Odym ahead, his expression turning grave.
In front of them, streaks of blue light soared into the sky, ready for battle.
