Chapter 37: Ogre? Rejoining the Food Chain

Chirp, chirp~
Chirp, chirp~ Chirp, chirp~
Above the dense jungle, several birds flew over the treetops. Faint insect chirps occasionally rose from all directions.
Tang Zheng, hidden behind a thick tree trunk and a thicket, calmly surveyed the small goblin tribe.
The absence of "elderly" goblins was to be expected. After all, goblins are omnivores. When food is scarce, the injured, disabled, or elderly are treated as emergency rations. However, the absence of young goblins was somewhat strange.
Although Tang Zheng didn't know much about the goblin race, he had learned a great deal about the monster's habits from the Rock Squad.
Goblins were most active in June and July. This was their primary breeding season, a time when they would not only hunt monsters and beasts in the forest but even leave the Touv Great Forest to prey on nearby villagers.
Inside the small goblin encampment.
As a group of goblins returned with five human corpses, the few goblins who had remained behind immediately let out excited 'wah-wah' cries.
The few goblins at the rear, panting heavily as they carried the corpses, did not immediately set them down. Instead, they continued until they reached the low, haphazardly built grass hut in the center.
They placed the five human corpses at the entrance of the hut. Immediately after, the group of goblins quickly retreated, gazing at the low grass hut with a mixture of anticipation and fear.
Seeing this, the corner of Tang Zheng's eye twitched.
Bang—
A tremor emanated from within the low grass hut, like the low growl of a beast. The next moment! A figure over two meters tall, with a massive, heavy body and sallow skin, slowly crawled out.
An ogre!
Realization dawned in Tang Zheng's eyes. This was the very ogre that had nearly annihilated the Rock Squad; no wonder the memory was so vivid.
"Hungry... hungry..." the ogre muttered vague groans as it extended two thick arms, propping itself on the ground before standing up.
Its hairless head was covered in fleshy bumps of varying sizes. A single glance was enough to send a shiver down one's spine.
As its head lifted, a small goblin could be seen clamped in the ogre's grotesque, ferocious mouth.
The small goblin made no sound, dangling limply from the creature's mouth, clearly long dead.
The next moment.
A palm-sized tongue darted out, rolling the half-eaten goblin into its mouth before the creature began to chew with sickening crunches.
Light green blood splashed out from the ogre's gaping mouth! All the surrounding goblins who witnessed this stood trembling, their very breathing growing faint.
Seeing such a savage and brutal scene, Tang Zheng's brow furrowed deeply as a wave of disgust washed over him.
He finally understood why this small goblin tribe had no young.
This ogre was injured!
Though there was some distance between them, Tang Zheng could clearly see a massive wound on the standing ogre's chest, larger than a washbasin.
Numerous flies were buzzing around the wound! No wonder the ogre had been so slow when crawling out of the hut and getting to its feet.
For a monster like an ogre, consuming large amounts of food was the best way to recover from its injuries!
"Food!" the ogre roared, its ferocious gaze falling upon the five human corpses on the ground, an excited expression on its face.
Immediately, it lifted a hand, grabbed a corpse, and began to eat voraciously. The hard bones of a human body were like brittle cartilage in the ogre's mouth.
Seeing this, Tang Zheng retracted his gaze and took a deep breath.
"What an impact... Truly an extraordinary welcome gift from the otherworld," Tang Zheng muttered to himself, then reopened his eyes, a profound chill in their depths.
In his previous world, humanity was the undisputed master of nature; all other creatures were simply categorized as edible or inedible. But in this otherworld, humans seemed to have become just another link in the food chain, hunted as prey. The scene sent an inexplicable shock through his very soul!
At this moment! Aside from disgust, Tang Zheng also felt an indescribable mix of shock and rage well up within him.
This anger didn't stem from the ogre's act of devouring human corpses. It came from the depths of his soul, from a previous life where humanity had clawed its way up from eating raw flesh and blood to the very peak of the food chain. It was the wildness rooted in the human spirit itself!
Whoosh!
His iron sword rose, held horizontally across his chest.
Tang Zheng's gaze turned icy as he carefully observed the ogre in the distance. It was somewhat larger than the one that had attacked the Rock Squad.
Aside from this ogre, the group of goblins was no problem.
The ogre was injured. This was the perfect opportunity to strike!
However.
Tang Zheng did not charge forward immediately but quietly waited for the right moment.
Any creature's reaction speed and coordination dulled after it had eaten its fill, making it slower than when it was hungry.
It wasn't that Tang Zheng was being overly cautious, but that he had to be prudent.
Without any detection-type skills, Tang Zheng naturally couldn't discern the ogre's exact level and could only rely on the wilderness survival experience mentioned by adventurers in this world to judge.
Unfortunately, Tang Zheng had virtually no experience in identifying monsters. After all, he only had one life, and he had no intention of losing it to carelessness or an oversight!
For this type of demi-human monster, with its massive physique and power far exceeding that of a human of the same level, it was safer to treat it as being two or three levels higher.
Tang Zheng recalled what he knew about the ogre race.
Ogres had a peculiar racial trait. Most, out of racial habit, would stay with goblins. The ogres handled combat while the goblins provided food, forming a mutually beneficial relationship.
In this forest, most goblin encampments likely had ogres present, and the larger the number of goblins in an encampment, the more ogres it should possess.
Hmm!
Tang Zheng noticed the ogre only stopped eating after consuming three corpses in one go.
Its bulging belly and the hint of lethargy in its ferocious expression all indicated that the ogre was full.
Expressionless, Tang Zheng raised his iron sword. With light steps, he swiftly closed in on the small goblin encampment!
Since the ogre had finished eating, the other goblins finally began to cheer, and started consuming tree fruits, the rotting carcasses of small beasts, and some even ate leaves.
