Chapter 36: Tailing, Discovery of a Small Goblin Tribe
“Guji, gu.”
“Wa!”
“Wa, wa.”
“...!”
Faint, subtle sounds drifted from the depths of the jungle.
Tang Zheng’s gaze flickered. He stopped in his tracks and pricked up his ears to listen as the indistinct sounds gradually grew clearer.
Something was coming this way, and there were quite a few of them!
Tang Zheng narrowed his eyes, scanning his surroundings. He quickly singled out a relatively sturdy tree and moved lightly behind it, pressing himself against the trunk to wait in silence.
Time ticked by.
Familiar "wa-wa" sounds rang out from time to time, making Tang Zheng’s eyes light up.
He'd had plenty of dealings with Goblins; these were clearly their cries!
Indeed.
This place was already nearing Oni territory!
Tang Zheng remained pressed against the sturdy tree trunk, his head slightly tilted forward as he looked in the direction the sounds were coming from.
Soon!
A Goblin team, thirteen strong, appeared in Tang Zheng’s field of vision.
These Goblins were wearing tattered, ill-fitting clothes. Some even had a cut-off pant leg on their heads, worn like a hat.
Their appearance was almost like that of refugees.
But Tang Zheng’s gaze sharpened. Among all the Goblins he had seen, this was the only group that was fully clothed, even if their clothes were extremely tattered.
The Goblins he had seen before were practically naked!
What surprised Tang Zheng the most was that the two Goblins at the very front were actually holding iron weapons, although they were just two forks.
His gaze moved past the Goblins in front to those behind them.
For the first time, a clear change appeared on Tang Zheng’s face.
The Goblins behind were laboriously carrying several bloody and mangled corpses, closely following the ones in front.
Humans!
Tang Zheng's expression turned grim.
There were five corpses in total. From their builds and clothing, he could tell they were likely three men and two women. Their dark, rough arms hung down, dragging along the ground.
This made Tang Zheng realize that these people were likely farmers from a nearby village.
Although he was currently in the Great Forest of Tob, he was actually still at its outermost edge. To the north lay the forest’s interior, while heading south would lead out of the Great Forest of Tob and into an area of desolate wilderness.
Continuing further south, he would be able to see a dirt road extending from E-Rantel.
And in this area, there were quite a few villages.
Compared to Carne Village in the Forest Sage King Hamusuke’s territory, the villages around the Oni’s territory or the Demon Snake Naga’s territory were not very safe.
Therefore, the Adventurer's Guild in E-Rantel always had a series of year-round tasks, such as eliminating monsters and Goblins.
“Wa, wa.”
The Goblin at the front, apparently feeling the pace was too slow, shrieked "wa-wa" at those behind, its bared fangs displaying its irritation.
Hearing the howl, the Goblins carrying the corpses showed panic on their green cheeks and struggled to continue forward.
Throughout the entire process, the group of Goblins did not discover Tang Zheng hidden behind the tree.
He watched expressionlessly as the Goblin team passed in front of him.
Tang Zheng lightly rotated the sword hilt in his hand, lifted his foot, and followed with light steps, trailing the Goblin team.
Although there were many of them, these Goblins weren't much of a threat!
The level of an ordinary commoner farmer in this otherworld was approximately Level 1. With training, there was a chance they could reach Level 2.
Ordinary Goblins were also at this level; after all, they belonged to a demi-human race and had some racial advantages.
Therefore, dealing with these Goblins was not difficult.
However.
Based on their behavior, Tang Zheng guessed they were likely returning to their Tribe.
Realizing this, Tang Zheng naturally wasn't in a hurry to deal with them immediately.
As he followed the Goblin team deeper into the Great Forest of Tob, Tang Zheng could clearly feel the surrounding trees and bushes becoming increasingly dense.
The atmosphere of the forest began to change. Most noticeably, the light suddenly dimmed, and an invisible sense of oppression subtly permeated the woods.
Tang Zheng flipped his palm, taking out a pocket watch from his item box. The time was only around 3 PM, but the light around him felt as if it were already evening.
“They shouldn’t go too deep.”
Tang Zheng looked at the Goblins carrying the corpses at the very back, his gaze flickering. At the same time, he used his iron sword to lightly draw two marks on a nearby tree as a marker.
In such a vast primeval forest, getting lost was a considerably troublesome and dangerous matter.
Therefore, Tang Zheng had come prepared.
Besides making marks on the trees he passed, his item box also contained a large bag of specially purchased lime powder.
Currently, he was still in the outer area of the forest and could still discern his direction, so there was no immediate need for the lime powder.
Next, Tang Zheng followed the group of Goblins for about another ten minutes. He was now certain they were about to reach the Goblin Tribe.
He had already caught the scent of rot in the air, along with an indescribable stench—like a mixture of smelly socks and rotten eggs.
Soon, a clearing suddenly opened up within the dense jungle of tall, sturdy trees.
The area was not very large, only about one and a half basketball courts in size. The entire area had clearly been cleared, with no overly tall trees.
As soon as the Goblins entered, they immediately became lively, especially the ones in the back carrying the corpses, who seemed much more excited.
Tang Zheng’s gaze swept across the area.
He saw many beast skeletons, among which were also human leg bones and arms, casually discarded to the side.
On the ground near the center, several thick beast hides from some unknown animal were spread out.
On one of them, a patch covered with withered yellow weeds, lay some rotting meat where a large swarm of insects had gathered.
The waves of foul stench permeating the air emanated from that spot.
What caught Tang Zheng's attention the most was a grass hut in the center of the area, clearly constructed from weeds and tree branches.
Tang Zheng scrutinized it carefully, a trace of doubt flashing in his eyes.
The grass hut was significantly larger than what the small-statured Goblins would need. Most importantly, it was the only hut in the entire area, which felt quite out of place.
Furthermore, the number of Goblins was also abnormal.
It wasn't that there were too many; rather, there were too few!
This was clearly a small Goblin Tribe. Besides the thirteen Goblins who had just returned, Tang Zheng could only see five Goblins left to guard it.
He wasn't sure if there were any Goblins inside the grass hut.
But the number of Goblins left behind was truly too small. Although Tang Zheng couldn't distinguish a Goblin's age by its appearance, he could tell that the ones guarding the Tribe were also young adults.
In other words, this small Goblin Tribe before him surprisingly had no elders or young.
