Chapter 54

chapter 030 part 2

"Mr. Stephen, the local authorities have decided to present you with an award, specifically to commend your outstanding surgical skills."

...

A gaunt-faced middle-aged man sat numbly on the hospital bed.

Countless honors were forever slipping away from him.

Stephen Strange, Philadelphia's top surgeon, was renowned throughout the city for his almost terrifying surgical success rate. Likewise, complementing his reputation were his shockingly high surgical fees and terrible personality.

Helplessly, he sat on the bed, staring blankly at his trembling hands, now filled with steel pins.

"My hands, my hands... is there really no way to heal them?" Stephen desperately tried to control his hands, but it was no use. They continued to tremble violently, meaning he could never perform surgery again in his life.

His future was ruined.

"Answer me! My hands can still recover!!"

Stephen's face was filled with terror, his eyes bloodshot, as he looked at his assistant with a cannibalistic gaze.

"Stephen, you need to calm down. A good mindset helps with recovery," the assistant said softly.

"No, tell me! Tell me loudly! My hands can still be saved!!"

Stephen's eyes were bloodshot, like a hideous and desperate monster.

The assistant's gaze was complicated. He had personally operated on Stephen after the car accident, and he knew, of course, that the hands of this celebrity doctor... were beyond saving.

Completely ruined.

Stephen let out a pained wail.

"You damn bastard, why did you perform surgery on me without permission? Don't do things you're not confident about, I told you that long ago!!" Stephen was about to get out of bed, but the intense pain in his hands made him cry out, and he collapsed onto the floor.

Stephen felt the cold, utterly lifeless sensation and despair filled his heart.

He was the best doctor, so of course he could determine the outcome. Reason told him that he was completely finished.

Stephen pushed through the crowd, dressed in a hospital gown, and stumbled onto the street, numbly gazing at everything.

"Stephen! Your hands are beyond medical recovery!" The forthright assistant caught up.

Stephen turned around in a furious rage, looking at him with a cannibalistic gaze. "So, what are you trying to say?!"

"I'm saying, medical means are useless, but you can try seeking non-medical means!" The assistant, startled, took a step back. "Don't you see? The times have changed. It's no longer the same unchanging world!"

Stephen's gaze followed the assistant's finger to a large screen on the street, which was playing intense war footage. Numerous alien creatures were slaughtering New York City, a scene of desperate apocalypse. But with the superheroes joining the fight, especially after large numbers of Transformers swarmed onto the battlefield, the tide turned.

Accompanied by stirring background music, the Transformers, shuttling back and forth across the battlefield and furiously unleashing their firepower, left a profound impression. Their almost perfect combat capabilities, coordination as if practiced a thousand times, and various peculiar weapons were now all bombarding the Chitauri Army.

It was like a sci-fi blockbuster.

"They are the non-medical means. Someone among them can surely heal your hands!"

Stephen looked at these individuals with superhuman power and reluctantly rallied his spirits, finally feeling a glimmer of hope.

His first action was to go to New York and find... Professor X of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Stephen, I understand your request, but I cannot help you." Professor X looked down at the banknotes in the box, then raised his head, his face full of regret.

"You're one of the most powerful Mutants in this world. If even you can't cure me, who else can I turn to?"

Stephen's face was filled with despair and immense pain.

Professor X was silent for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "I can recommend two people to you. They might have a way to heal you... but I can't guarantee they'll see you."

"Who? I have a lot of money! Anyone who can cure my hands, I'm willing to give all my money to them!" Stephen exclaimed excitedly.

Professor X was silent for a moment, then spoke, "One is Martin. He should be the second most powerful human on this planet. Not only does he possess world-destroying power, but he also has the ability to create a powerful civilization. He and his intelligent robots most likely have a way to heal you."

Professor X's face was earnest.

He spoke sincerely. Martin surely had a method to heal a ruined pair of hands, but the problem was...

"That man, who is both Angel and Demon, he won't see me..."

Stephen heard that name and immediately lost all hope.

Martin's formidable reputation had long since spread across the globe. Every action he took was exceedingly bloody and tyrannical; there was no one in the world who didn't know him. Especially after the two major events of Odin's descent to Earth and the Chitauri invasion of New York, everyone realized what Martin truly meant to Earth.

The strongest, most iron-blooded barrier.

Martin could cure him; Stephen was deeply convinced of this. But he had no chance of meeting Martin, much less convincing Martin to condescend and cure him with mere money.

Stephen felt that the possibility of being killed on sight was greater.

"Who's the other person?" Stephen asked, a mix of hope and apprehension on his face.

Professor X crossed his fingers, paused, then gravely said, "There's one more person, who should be the most powerful human on this planet. She has protected Earth for five hundred years; she's a living legend. The Mystic Arts she wields are beyond imagination."

"She? Where is she then?"

"Go west. Cross the Pacific Ocean, ascend the Himalayas. If she wishes to see you, you will naturally find her. If she doesn't wish to see you..."

Professor X shook his head.

Stephen left, looking bewildered and hesitant, a slip of paper in his hand with a place name written on it.

Kamar-Taj.

Jean asked with a puzzled expression, "Professor, why did you spend time seeing this ordinary man? Isn't Martin the strongest human? He even defeated Odin."

Professor X replied, "I'm not sure who is more powerful between the two of them. Furthermore, I only just found out that place actually exists."
