Chapter 90: Exchanging for an Eevee

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

"Pokedex Beep."

With a sudden, violent vibration at his waist, Ash reacted with a jolt of excitement, pulling out his precious treasure.

In a desperate situation, you still have to rely on the Pokedex.

The Zubat nodded, indicating it had finally formed a tiny bond with Ash. It opened its mouth again, emitting a special sound imperceptible to humans towards the Pokedex, as if transmitting some kind of information.

"Pokedex Beep. Identifying Supersonic..."

The Pokedex's cpu began to run at high speed. After being scanned and cleaned by the rogue software—Alola Giant Guardian—its system was now pristine and pure.

"Pokedex Beep. Commencing Supersonic to text conversion: (Transcribing) The Rainbow Group is the key to Saffron City."

Ash's brow furrowed. He was planning to go to the Saffron Gym to save people, so how had the Rainbow Group suddenly gotten involved?

Forget it.

In any case, at least he now had a direction. As it happened, he had his own history with the Rainbow Group, so heading there first was fine.

The two exchanged a look and, without hesitation, woke the soundly sleeping Pikachu and started walking towards the Silph Co. Building, where the Rainbow Group was located.

Brock's goal, naturally, was to have Ash drive out the entire Rainbow Group. Since they were occupying the place illegally, forceful expulsion was the best option.

As for why he had so much faith in Ash... to put it another way, he actually had faith in Red.

With a god of slaughter backing him up, all he needed to do was push Ash into a fiery abyss of blades and hellfire. When the latter was on the brink of death, he would naturally soar.

Perhaps, as a fellow Gym Trainer, he also hoped the Saffron Gym could return to peace.

"Perhaps this is great compassion?"

Back at the Saffron Gym, a faint golden, saintly visage emerged behind the Brock Doll...

Outside the Silph Co. Building.

Ash and Misty looked up at the magnificent, golden skyscraper, feeling a bit overwhelmed. Then, taking a deep breath and trying to appear as if they'd seen it all before, they pushed open the huge glass doors and went inside.

"Welcome to the Rainbow Group~"

An electronic voice sounded. By now, the Rainbow Group had already justifiably declared themselves the masters of the building.

Ash scanned the area. The first floor was a reception hall, though it didn't have much in the way of facilities or decorations, just a few idle staff members playing on TIMI.

They wore matching uniforms, with a rainbow pattern on the chest and a small, colorful letter "R".

"Team Rocket."

The two exchanged a look, not daring to be careless.

Although the "R" was a different color from the red "R" of Jessie and James, Ash knew perfectly well what it meant. Mentally putting his guard up, he walked towards the front desk.

A male employee saw them approach and, ignoring the curses of his teammates in his phone, immediately closed TIMI. He put on a smile and asked politely:

"Welcome to the Rainbow Group. How may I help you?"

"Oh, right, I won this on the S.S. Anne."

Ash, pretending to be a harmless rookie, casually took out a small wooden sign. Engraved on the front was a colorful 'R', while on the back was a sticker of a small, brown, beast-like pokemon.

"This is..."

Seeing the wooden sign, the staff member's eyes lit up, and he said excitedly:

"My goodness, this is incredible! This is a pokemon exchange voucher that our Rainbow Group issues exclusively to very special guests! Please, follow me."

He didn't suspect anything was amiss. These things were only issued to core members within the group; he figured Ash must be the illegitimate son of some Team Rocket Executive.

Besides, no one would dare try to pass off a fake in front of their Rainbow Group, let alone a mere youth. So, he hurriedly led the two into an elevator.

"Beep."

He took out his exclusive card, and only then did the elevator start.

Ash glanced at the identity card, once again steeling his guard.

On the seventh floor of the Silph Co. Building, Ash was led into a large hall. The room was filled with all sorts of intricate mechanical equipment, and bustling staff in lab coats rushed about. They had the appearance of fanatical researchers, so engrossed in their work that they didn't notice the two newcomers.

"This way, please."

After walking a few dozen more steps, Ash was led into a small room. An old man with a full head of white, explosive-looking hair was sitting at a desk. His clothes were disheveled, and the hair and beard on his face were a messy tangle; he was quite unkempt.

Seeing them, he shot up from his seat.

"Ohoho, so this is the youth who got the special Eevee voucher? Let me see, you've got a pretty sturdy build."

He laughed heartily, then patted Ash's shoulders and chest. After sizing up Ash's demeanor, he nodded to himself.

This spirited young lad looks pretty good.

His friendly, cheerful old-man demeanor was certainly a bit unusual.

"Entrusting that Eevee to you seems like a good thing."

Ash didn't quite grasp the full meaning, but he still greeted him politely.

"Hello, Elder. I'm Ash from Pallet Town, and I'm going to be a Pokémon Master."

This declaration made the explosive-haired old man laugh heartily and clap him on the shoulder.

"A Pokémon Master, eh? It's been a long time since I've heard anyone say that... But as long as you keep moving in that direction, young man, you'll succeed one day."

Hearing this, Ash's eyes lit up. His impression of the old man instantly soared, and his gaze now held a trace of respect.

"Ohoho, I forgot to introduce myself. You don't need to worry about my full name. You can call me Dr. Saiban. I'm the chief scientist at Silph Co.!"

He thumped his chest, his face full of pride.

"Dr. Saiban?"

Ash repeated the name, feeling it had a strange, hypnotic quality.

But what concerned him more was that this place was filled with people claiming to be from the Rainbow Group, yet now someone from Silph Co. had appeared?

A remnant of the old era?

Isn't he afraid of getting kicked out?

But Dr. Saiban paid no mind to the expression of the staff member who had led them there. He waved a hand, dismissing him, and then led Ash and Misty straight to the inner part of the room. He pulled a curtain off a high platform, revealing a rusty iron cage, its surface pitted and dented as if it had been frequently struck.

Inside the cage was a brownish-yellow, beast-like pokemon, lying with its back to them. They couldn't see its face, only a large, fluffy tail.

"Pokedex Beep. Eevee, the evolution pokemon. Its body's type will shift according to the energy it comes into contact with in its environment, eventually culminating in evolution. This process is irreversible."

The Pokedex reported automatically, being serious for once.

"Wow, it's an Eevee! That's a very rare pokemon. I heard it can evolve into three different forms."

Misty exclaimed in delight, unable to resist leaning closer, hoping the Eevee would turn around so she could rub its cheeks.

After all, Eevee was on the Vermilion News' list of the top ten cutest pokemon.

To her disappointment, however, the Eevee didn't turn its head, remaining motionless where it lay.

"Hehe, this little one... it's a bit shy around strangers..."

Dr. Saiban's tone weakened slightly, and an unreadable emotion flickered in his eyes. In the end, though, he said nothing more. He took out a Poké Ball, sucked the Eevee into it through the bars of the cage, and then handed it to Ash with great solemnity.

"This is your prize, an Eevee. However, this young lady was mistaken. According to our research at Silph Co., Eevee has at least seven evolutions."

"Seven!?"

Ash was stunned. It was the first time he'd ever heard of a pokemon that was so... flashy.

"In any case, I'm entrusting this pokemon to your care..."

Ash accepted the Poké Ball, bewildered. He didn't understand why the doctor's tone was so heavy. His eyes darted around as he decided to try and indirectly probe for information about the building.

But Dr. Saiban just patted Ash's shoulder. He looked like he wanted to say something, but he stopped himself and turned back to his workbench.

"Hurry up and take the Eevee and leave Saffron City. This is not a place you should set foot in..."

This act of saying one thing and holding back another was just like that psychic uncle, making Ash want to punch Dr. Saiban in the forehead.

Seeing that the doctor had already closed his eyes to rest, Ash and Misty could only exchange a look and leave the room.

Back in the main hall, the guy who had led them there was gone, probably back to settling scores in TIMI. The two walked to the elevator. The Silph Co. Building had a full 40 floors, so they had to wait quite a while before the elevator slowly arrived.

The elevator doors opened. Inside stood several employees in Rainbow Group uniforms. Ash took a deep breath and stepped inside with Misty.

Before long, a few of the employees started boasting, and the content of their conversation made Ash secretly prick up his ears.

"Hey, did you guys hear? I heard someone exchanged for that Eevee."

"You mean that failed product?"
