Chapter 69

Chapter 69: Gengar's Killing Spree

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

Ash had never been afraid of any ghost.

If a ghost ever managed to kill him, then through willpower alone, he would become a ghost himself.

The scene when the two ghosts met would surely be awkward.

"Are you the one who killed me?"

He would beat that ghost into a second ascension.

But what was the big idea, slapping Brother Red's soul right out of my body!?

Ash had no time to blame the bewildered Gengar beside him. He watched as Brother Red's translucent soul floated completely out of his head, suffused with a golden light and surrounded by a sacred hymn. It was utterly divine.

It looked for all the world like it was ascending to the Western Paradise!

"Damn, so this is what Brother Red looks like?"

The ethereal figure that had separated from his body looked to be about seventeen or eighteen years old, with an indifferent expression and lifeless eyes. It was probably also shocked by Gengar's Evil Spirit Dispersal.

Ash had thought Brother Red was, at most, three or four years older than him.

"But he looks completely different from me."

He remembered Brother Red once saying that both Gary and Blue looked extremely similar to the souls within them, differing only in age. He was the only one who looked completely different from Ash.

The soul was still drifting upward. Panicked, Ash reached out to grab it, only for his hand to pass right through.

*Swoosh!*

Soon, the dazed-looking Red passed straight through the ceiling to the floor above, vanishing without a trace.

Ash: "..."

Damn it!

Did he really just ascend like that...?

Beads of sweat streamed down his face as he shot a harsh glare at the Gengar beside him.

"Gengar...?"

Gengar's large eyes widened, its wrinkled skin creasing. It looked down at the paper fan in its hand, utterly and innocently perplexed.

It had just playfully slapped its Trainer and managed to knock out an evil spirit?

That should be a good thing, so why the attitude?

Truly puzzling for a ghost...

Ash hastily started dragging Gengar's chubby body, searching for the stairs to the third floor. Since Brother Red hadn't been out of his body for long, he blindly guessed that if he could just suck Brother Red back into his stomach, it would be as if nothing had happened. It was the same principle as picking up food that had fallen on the floor within three seconds—it doesn't count as dropped.

"Damn it, where are the stairs?"

From the second floor onward, the Pokémon Tower was shrouded in a thick fog, and various wooden planks and tombstones blocked the way, making it difficult to move quickly. Ash searched for a long time but couldn't find the staircase leading up.

"If only I hadn't given away Brother Red's Tool Pidgeot!" Ash grumbled under his breath.

One Defog move would have cleared the entire Pokémon Tower.

Crap!

Have I already developed the wicked thought of coveting Brother Red's legacy?

Ash shook his head violently, forcing himself to focus on finding the stairs.

He would only consider the legacy if he really couldn't find them. The proper respect had to be given!

Pokémon Tower, third floor.

The fog here seemed even thicker than on the second floor. A spiky-haired youth was sitting cross-legged before a tombstone, his shoulders trembling slightly as he warily glanced around.

"Elder Brother Green... how much longer do we have to pay respects...?"

The one speaking was Gary, who had entered the Pokémon Tower a step ahead.

After a long moment, a reply slowly echoed in his mind, its tone unusually somber today.

"Let me stay here for another hour."

Before Gary was a tombstone. On it was a black-and-white photograph of a brown mouse Pokémon, covered in dust. It clearly hadn't been visited in a long time.

He hadn't erected this tombstone; Green had simply used his memory from the previous world to find the same spot in the Pokémon Tower.

And in this spot, the Pokémon being mourned was also the same.

It was rather ironic...

"Gary, don't tell me you're scared...?" Green suddenly asked.

Hearing this, Gary shuddered, jerked his head up, and yelled:

"Sca... scared? Me, the great Gary, scared?? Hmph, Elder Brother Green, you can pay your respects for as long as you want today!"

The louder the voice, the braver the person.

He regretted it the moment the words left his mouth.

Perhaps because of his shout, several sinister "hee hee" and "rustle rustle" sounds immediately echoed around him, making the hairs on his neck stand on end.

Unbeknownst to him, several Gastly and Haunter had already appeared around him, flickering in and out of sight in the thick fog, seemingly about to attack.

Seeing this, Gary's courage surprisingly surged.

"Hmph! Your lordship here is only afraid of real ghosts. Ghost Pokémon don't count for squat!"

He quickly reached for his waist and took out a Poké Ball.

"Elder Brother Green, I'm borrowing this for a sec, th-that's okay, right?"

"Use whatever."

Green was still lost in reminiscence and replied absentmindedly.

Gary didn't have any Pokémon with a good type advantage against Ghost-types, so he had to borrow one for now. A little borrowing didn't count.

He threw the Poké Ball and shouted, "Come on out, Tool Pidgeot!"

"Pidgeo-geot!!"

The next moment, a gigantic eagle with an exceptionally cool appearance and resplendent feathers appeared in the fog. Upon hearing its nickname, it flapped its wings and cried out, seeming very pleased with the title.

This was the genius of Red's training methods. Not only could he make a Pidgeot learn all sorts of utility moves its species couldn't normally learn.

He could even make it feel genuinely satisfied with the nickname "Tool Pidgeot."

For instance, when Ash called his Pidgeotto "Tool Bird," he only did so when they were pulling off a sneak attack. If the latter realized, Ash wouldn't dare call it that directly.

Call them that too often, and your Pokémon will turn on you.

Green: "..."

Damn it!

That wretched Red, he turned my bird into *this*...?!

Gary, however, was oblivious but impressed. It was rare for him to use a Pokémon that even his grandmother could win with, and he was quite delighted. With a grand point of his finger, he commanded:

"If you please, Tool Pidgeot, use Foresight!"

As he spoke, Pidgeot's eagle eyes flashed with a strange blue light. After a 360-degree scan, the surrounding Gastly and Haunter were all revealed, unable to remain hidden in the fog.

Once a Ghost-type Pokémon was hit by Foresight, even a Normal-type Tackle would be effective.

"Now, Tool Pidgeot, use Roar!" Gary commanded again.

Pidgeot threw its head back and let out a shrill cry. Its sharp, piercing call carried the air of a lofty king, forcing the surrounding Ghost Pokémon to flee in panic and scatter like smoke.

Seeing this, Gary smirked smugly, put his hands on his hips, and recalled Pidgeot.

"Hmph, how dare you try to scare the great Gary!"

He was only afraid of real ghosts!

Go on, pop a real ghost out of nowhere if you dare! This Pokémon Tower is a real joke!

The words had barely left his mouth when Gary suddenly felt a chill at his feet.

He subconsciously looked down and saw a mysterious, translucent shadow slowly rising from the floor.

This shadow wore a red cap, its face was ashen, and its eyes were cold and vacant. It floated up silently with a solemn expression until it was hovering directly in front of Gary.

The two locked eyes.

Gary: "!?"

This wasn't some Pokémon; this was a genuine human ghost!

"G-G-GHOST!!!"

Gary shot up as if spring-loaded, his face instantly turning deathly pale, nearly fainting on the spot.

But immense willpower kept him from collapsing. His mind, however, was trembling uncontrollably. Forgetting all about paying respects to some Raticate from another world, he spun around and broke into a full sprint.

His speed was like lightning, far surpassing even Ash's hundred-meter dash in his peak state.

"Aaaah, there's a ghost, a ghoooost!"

He screamed as he ran, his cries echoing throughout the entire Pokémon Tower.

"Huh? What's that sound?"

Ash flinched and quickly followed the sound coming from above. Peering intently, he actually spotted the stairs to the third floor in the fog.

But before he could step onto the stairs, a figure came barreling down them, wailing and screaming as it ran.

"Help me! A ghoooost!"

The figure was in a frantic panic, unable to see anything clearly in front of them, and slammed right into a dumbfounded Ash.

"Oof!" "Damn it!"

Caught off guard, the two of them tumbled to the floor together.

The impact jolted Gary back to his senses. When he came to and saw that the person before him was his childhood friend, tears instantly welled up in his eyes, and he was about to rush forward and hug Ash.

"Ga-Gary?!"

Ash, on the other hand, was completely stunned.

Didn't this guy, Gary, already kick the bucket? Why did he suddenly appear in the Pokémon Tower?

Wait, the Pokémon Tower?

Does that mean... this Gary in front of me... is a ghost?

Seeing his ghastly, pale face, could he have evolved into a terrifying Cyan-level evil spirit?!

When he saw the other extending a hand as if to grab him, Ash's face instantly turned just as pale.

Danger!

"A Gho... Ghost!"

Ash leaped to his feet and took off running in the opposite direction, wailing and screaming as he went. His voice instantly echoed throughout the entire Pokémon Tower.

Gary: "?"

This scene left him completely stunned, frozen in place and at a loss.

"Geng-geng-geng-geng!" At that moment, a cold cackle rang out.

Gengar, which had been invisible nearby, heard the keyword and a grin spread across its face. Its whole body began to tremble with excitement.

It had messed up earlier, so it had to make amends!

With that thought, it brandished its paper fan, preparing to give Gary the full exorcism treatment as well.

Gary: "?!"

"What the hell!?"

The paper fan swung towards him, sending a chill down both Gary's and Green's spines. The hair on their bodies stood on end. Adrenaline surged, and they used every ounce of strength they had to barely dodge the attack as it grazed past their faces.

"Phew... close call."

When Gary got up, his back was already soaked with sweat.

If he had actually been hit by that strange paper fan, he felt as if his very soul would have been scattered to the winds.

"Huh, where'd that Gengar go?"

Gary looked around. He thought he'd vaguely seen a chubby Gengar, but now the purple-black fatty was nowhere in sight.

"Geng-geng!"

The next second, a wicked cackle came from directly above his head. Gary gulped hard as a terrifying thought entered his mind.

Finally, unable to ignore the itching on his neck, he tremblingly raised his head.

There, a Gengar was positioned vertically above him, its blood-red eyes glinting like a predator sizing up its prey. The paper fan in its chubby little hand was glowing with a strange light.

*Smack!*

It was a familiar script. The paper fan came down right across his face.

The next second, a blissful sense of spiritual sublimation filled his heart. Gary's vision blurred, and it was as if a supreme, wondrous melody was playing in his ears.

In a daze, he thought he saw a brilliant golden light rising from the top of his head...

Within the golden light, a translucent afterimage of a human figure gradually rose, its expression saintly. The handsome face looked somewhat familiar...

On the same day, Green was also sent to the afterlife by Ash's Pokémon... —
