Chapter 68: The Day Red Was Finally Released

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander

.

The two arrived at the staircase leading from the first floor to the second.

Looking up, a ghastly, eerie aura rushed down at them, as if it could devour a person at any moment, making Misty shiver involuntarily.

Ghost-type Pokémon weren't scary, but up there were real ghosts!

What the Farfetch'd!

Wait, this didn't seem to have anything to do with me in the first place!

Misty slapped her head, having discovered a blind spot.

"Right, it's not safe for Brock to be alone. If he gets permanently trapped in that 'Quit Fap' forum and can't get back, I can at least collect his body. You're on your own from here. Good luck, 886."

Without waiting for Ash to react, she had already scampered back to the main entrance to chat with that old witch.

Ash: "..."

Tsk, so this is what women are like. How laughable.

He shook his head with a dismissive sneer, then turned to Cubone and Pikachu.

"Let's go. What are a few ghouls and ghosts? As long as we possess a righteous aura and our three burners are gathered at the crown, we'll be impervious to gods and demons!"

"Kala!"

Cubone struck the stairs hard with its Thick Club, its expression impatient. The aura from the stairs above felt more and more familiar.

After a moment, having received only one response, Ash frowned. Where did the usual cute "Pika-pika" go?

He suddenly realized Pikachu was no longer by his side. Ash quickly turned his head to look, soon spotting his target in the most conspicuous place.

There, on a three-piece set of a mattress, blanket, and pillow, the electric mouse was sleeping soundly within the green barrier that symbolized safety, even starting to snore.

Electric mice are also afraid of ghosts.

Ash: "..."

Damn it!

This mouse is slacking off again!

Helpless, he could only pick up Cubone with one hand, take a deep breath, and ascend the stairs alone. A plump Gengar faintly materialized behind him...

"Geng-geng-geng-geng~~"

On the second floor of the Pokémon Tower, despite being indoors, the fog suddenly thickened and spread. What came into view were rows of solemn, gray-white tombstones, and in the center, a green light.

Presumably, every floor had one of these green barriers, which at least gave passersby a place to rest.

Soon, a truly sinister, howling sound reached his ears, indicating he had now entered an area where wild Pokémon might appear.

"Sss..."

"Hee..."

He hadn't taken more than a few steps when a rustling sound grew louder. Ash looked up abruptly and found that two wild Pokémon had appeared before him at some point.

One was just a pitch-black, round head with a ferocious expression, its entire body seemingly made of gas. Purple mist floated around its head as it drifted back and forth in mid-air.

The other Pokémon looked as if its outer gas had condensed into a fixed shape. Though it still had only a spiky head, two purple claws had appeared in front of it.

"Pokédex: Gastly, a Ghost-type Pokémon. It resembles a marinated egg. Its origins are unknown, but it is said to be a new form that appears after a Cloyster's shell is shattered."

"Pokédex: Haunter, a Ghost-type Pokémon. It is the evolved form of Gastly. Its fingers and tongue are very agile, and it can swallow a Clefable in one gulp."

The Pokédex announced twice in a row.

"So these are Ghost-type Pokémon..."

Ash's gaze sharpened. He had heard the names of the entire Gengar line before but didn't expect the differences in this evolutionary line to be so great.

These two skinny, malnourished Pokémon would one day become so plump?

Ash couldn't help but cast a mournful look at the two Pokémon before him.

In response, the Gastly and Haunter glared fiercely, looking ready to attack.

In the past, upon seeing a human, they might have just played a few pranks. But now, sensing that humans might directly destroy their habitat and level the Pokémon Tower, all playfulness was gone, replaced by hatred.

A black light was already gathering in the eyes of the two Pokémon, building up momentum as they prepared to unleash the Night Shade move.

*Take down the humans and protect our most beautiful 2D world!*

*Smack!*

*Smack!*

Before Night Shade could be launched, two crisp smacks resounded in succession.

The attacker was unseen, only a paper fan, which slammed into the heads of the two ghosts with a concussive blow. Since they had gaseous bodies, their entire heads were flattened, and the Night Shade exploded right in their eye sockets.

*Boom!!*

Ghost-types hitting themselves. Super effective!

The Gastly and Haunter both crashed to the ground. Their semi-gaseous bodies were dented, and they looked pitiful, clearly having sustained serious injuries.

"Geng-geng-geng-geng!!"

Half a second later, Ash's Gengar slowly materialized, raising a chubby finger at the two from mid-air. Its whole body began to spasm erratically, as if in merciless ridicule.

*Is that all you've got?*

"Huh, that paper fan..."

Ash had sharp eyes and noticed that Gengar was holding a paper fan he hadn't seen before. On it were written four large characters: "Demons Begone." It looked somewhat familiar.

Damn, isn't that the old witch's magical artifact? The one that could obliterate Brother Red's soul with a single hit?!

It managed to pilfer that?

Red: "..."

The pressure was on him again...

Gengar floated forward. Seeing their own evolved form, the two ghosts immediately became obedient and stopped moving.

"Geng-geng-geng-geng? (Hey kid, are there any female Gengars around here?)"

The two seemed to mishear the word, looking confused. A *voracious* Gengar? A Gengar with a good appetite?

"Sss-sss..."

"Hee-hee..."

The Haunter and Gastly nodded hastily. The Pokémon Tower was mostly populated by Gastly and Haunter, along with a few stray Rattata on the ground. Besides them, there was their true boss, a Gengar.

The kind that could eat ten Clefables in one meal!

It definitely qualified as what the other was calling a Gengar with a good appetite.

"Geng-geng-geng!!"

Getting the answer it wanted, Gengar was very pleased. Its body puffed up like a large balloon, and it waved its hands, signaling for the two to leave and not disturb its pursuit of true love.

The two took the hint and quickly floated off into the dense fog, disappearing in seconds.

"Geng-geng!!"

Gengar floated back in front of Ash, indicating that the female Gengar was upstairs and they should get a move on.

Seeing Ash standing there, lost in thought, it suddenly raised the paper fan and, as a prank, aimed to give his head a friendly pat.

Danger!!

In an instant, an unprecedented sense of crisis enveloped Ash, nearly suffocating him!

Ash was horrified. He had just been wondering if this damn fan would work to purify evil spirits if someone else used it.

Is this Gengar stupid? How could it use something like this on its own trainer?! Murder?!

If that thing hit him, he'd probably have to find a grave with good feng shui for Brother Red right here on the spot and start burning incense!

*Swoosh!*

The intense sense of danger sent Ash's adrenaline surging. His body instantly moved like lightning, dodging to the side. He finally managed to just barely graze past what felt like a fatal blow.

"Hoo..."

Thank goodness...

After getting up, he felt as if he had used up all his life's strength. His back was already drenched in profuse sweat.

Ash had only bought one stick of incense just now; he really didn't want to go back down and buy another one for Brother Red...

Even Red, within his soul, breathed a sigh of relief.

In that fleeting moment, even he had felt a sense of crisis, as if his very soul was about to be scattered to the winds...

*Psy-ai-ai, what the hell is this paper fan!?*

Ash quickly snapped back to reality. He got up, intending to have a serious talk with Gengar. It was best to have his Charmander burn this dangerous thing with a burst of fire.

"Huh?"

Ash was a bit puzzled. Where was Gengar?

He looked left and right but couldn't see the plump figure anywhere.

"Geng-geng-geng!!"

Suddenly, a mischievous laugh came from directly above him. Ash's breath caught in his throat. He gulped, and a terrible thought suddenly entered his mind.

A bit of trivia: if you're being watched by an evil spirit from behind, as long as you don't turn around, it won't attack you.

But in that moment, Ash's neck became incredibly itchy. Finally, unable to bear his own curiosity, he looked up.

A Gengar was face-to-face with him. Eyeball to eyeball.

Its two blood-red eyes were wide, round, and cruel, its mouth stretched into a grin revealing a row of pearly white teeth.

But none of that was the point. The point was...

The thing in its chubby hands!

*Smack!*

A crisp sound rang out. Not even Arceus could have dodged it. Ash, caught completely off guard, was hit full-on by the paper fan, leaving a painful red mark across his face.

The next second, a bizarre feeling, like his soul was being released, washed over him. It was unstoppable, making his mind spin...

In his daze, Ash thought he saw a brilliant golden light.

Within the golden light, a translucent youth wearing a cap was slowly ascending. His body was a translucent afterimage, his expression serene and holy. His features looked exactly like how he had always imagined Brother Red. And above, there seemed to be a heaven filled with sacred hymns...

On that day, Red was finally released by Ash's Pokémon.
