Chapter 112: vs. Mr. Mime! (Part 1)
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)
"A 3v3, huh."
Ash pushed down his hat. If it was three Pokémon, he could send out his three main powerhouses.
As the Gym Leader, Sabrina on the opposite side naturally had to send out her Pokémon first. A blue light flashed in her eyes, and a Poké Ball mysteriously floated up from her waist, landing in the Battle Arena.
A red light flashed, revealing a humanoid Pokémon standing upright. It had a cute, child-like head, a white body with several pink dots, and slender limbs. Its feet looked like they were wearing a pair of hooked boots, and its arms waved in mid-air, pantomiming the act of wiping a mirror.
Like a clown from a Circus, its movements and expressions were somewhat comical.
"Pokedex Beep. Mr. Mime, the Barrier Pokémon. It creates invisible walls in front of itself. It is said that a clown from a certain Circus Troupe failed to take off its mask and became a Pokémon the next day. It is one of this year's top ten most popular Pokémon (among housewives)."
The Pokedex reported automatically.
Ash scratched his head, glancing at the Pokémon opposite him crying "Bari-bari." He thought to himself, "Do housewives really like this type?"
He hadn't understood that last list for female fans either.
However, this Mr. Mime didn't seem to be exuding any particularly powerful Aura. Ash threw out his Poké Ball.
"I choose you, Squirtle!"
"Squirtle-squirtle!"
The small blue tortoise stepped onto the Battle Arena. The transparent, glowing floor startled it at first, but it steadied itself after stomping a few times and finding it solid.
The surrounding neon lights and cheers also made Squirtle pause. It had never seen a spectacle like this.
It really made a tortoise nervous.
"He didn't send out his Gengar?"
"Sending out Butterfree or Pidgeotto would have been interesting, too. Imagine flying out from the skyscraper, with a 40-story drop below."
"I guess Ash has some other strategy."
The people in the Friends and Family Seating murmured among themselves.
Don't be fooled by Ash's usual simple-mindedness; when it came to a Battle, his mind worked incredibly fast.
Ash recalled his Poké Ball.
It wasn't that he didn't want to send out Gengar; the problem was that the latter hadn't returned since going out to find true love in Saffron City.
The Strongest Gengar: Urban Love Hunter?
"The Saffron Gym Challenge Match, let the Battle begin!"
Following a loud shout from Sabrina's father, Ash launched the first attack.
"Squirtle, use Water Gun!"
"Squirtle!"
Squirtle's eyes focused. It took a deep breath and shot out a jet of water. Though not particularly wide, its velocity was high.
Sabrina said nothing, and Mr. Mime didn't dodge. It simply made a glass-wiping motion on the spot, as if a wall truly stood before it.
*Pfft!*
As the Water Gun drew near, it was blocked as if by a real wall, the water splashing to the sides. Only a small amount of water passed through the barrier, leaving Mr. Mime virtually unharmed.
Only when the stray neon lights happened to shine on it could a blurry, rectangular wall be seen.
"Tch, so that's its wall-making ability..."
It was the first time Ash had encountered such a strange Ability. His gaze shifted, and he commanded again:
"Get moving! Keep using Water Gun."
"Squirtle!"
Squirtle nodded and started running on its short blue legs, spitting a jet of water at Mr. Mime as it moved.
Sabrina's eyes began to gleam with excitement as she commanded in a low voice:
"Mr. Mime, let's get moving too."
"Bari!"
Mr. Mime nodded and began to run. Whenever a jet of water approached, it would wipe an Air Wall into existence in front of it before continuing to move.
Just like that, the mime and the tortoise—one on attack, one on defense—steadily closed the distance between them.
By the time Ash realized it, Mr. Mime was already less than a meter away from Squirtle.
Ash's eyes lit up. "Good chance! Use Tackle!"
At the end of the day, Psychic-type Pokémon are ranged mages. Once you get in close, you could take one down with a brick.
Squirtle wore a confident expression. Its round, tortoise-like head glowed with a cold light, and it charged forward without a second thought.
*Clang!*
A sharp pain suddenly shot through its head, as if it had slammed into a thick wall. Squirtle fell back, sitting on the ground, rubbing its head with tears in its eyes.
"Squirtle..."
Damn it! When did a wall get here?!
When Squirtle came to its senses, it found that its body had been surrounded by several blurry, transparent Light Screens. The 360-degree, gapless enclosure trapped it within a narrow space of two to three cubic meters.
Outside, a Mr. Mime was continuously taunting it with cries of "Bari-bari," which was really drawing its ire.
This really pisses a tortoise off!
With that thought, Squirtle began to charge, repeatedly ramming the Transparent Wall in front of it.
"Squirtle, calm down!"
Ash quickly reminded it.
He hadn't expected the Transparent Wall could be used not only for defense, but also to control the opponent. It seemed that even without using her Psychic Powers, Sabrina was not to be underestimated in a Pokémon Battle.
"Squirtle..."
Hearing him, Squirtle calmed down a little, planning to find a weak spot and focus its attack there.
But though the tortoise wanted quiet, the mime would not stop. Its eyes suddenly flashed with blue light. With a wave of its finger, the blue light instantly passed through the wall and acted upon Squirtle.
"Mr. Mime, use Confusion!"
Sabrina instructed.
"Squirtle?"
The next second, Squirtle's body began to uncontrollably and frantically slam into the surrounding walls. It only stopped after four or five hits, which left several large bumps on its round head.
"Squirtle..."
This is giving a tortoise a real headache!
But before Squirtle could recover, the blue light enveloped it again, controlling it and making it crash wildly into the Air Wall once more.
*Clang!*
*Clang!*
The series of impacts suddenly gave Ash an idea to break the stalemate. He quickly yelled out:
"Squirtle, use that force and go into a Rapid Spin!"
"Squirtle!"
At his words, Squirtle's gaze instantly sharpened. It abruptly retracted its limbs and tail into its Tortoise Shell and began to spin rapidly, using the hardness of its shell to continuously bombard the surrounding walls.
*Clang!*
*Clang!*
After accelerating three times, the Rapid Spin successfully shattered the Light Screen. The spinning Tortoise Shell shot out from within, and right in front of it was the Mr. Mime that had been using Confusion.
"Bari?!"
Before it could react, the Rapid Spin had already struck its chest head-on. The Gyro Ball-like Power sent it flying back several meters, skidding to a halt only after carving a long trench in the ground.
"He could break the Reflect and Confusion Combination Move like that?"
"This youth really knows his stuff."
The surrounding audience burst into applause for Ash's skill. The cheers seemed to give him a buff, and Ash's Aura surged as he shouted again:
"Keep up the Rapid Spin in the air!"
Squirtle's Tortoise Shell began to spin continuously in the air, but it only circled Mr. Mime without moving in to attack.
When the time was right, Ash pointed dramatically. "Now, attack it with Water Gun!"
"Squirtle!"
Squirtle suddenly stopped spinning in mid-air, stuck its head out to fire a jet of water, then instantly retracted it and switched back to its Agility state to change position.
It repeated this action for seven or eight turns, attacking Mr. Mime from all angles.
"Bari..."
This time, its speed was much faster than the ground-bound tortoise from before. Mr. Mime had just erected a wall and was about to move when a jet of water shot at it from another direction. Helpless, it could only twist its body and prop up another Light Screen behind it.
"Huh, this scene."
The audience, with their bird's-eye view, quickly noticed something was off.
Sure enough, in just a few turns, the Light Screens Mr. Mime had propped up around its body had completely surrounded it, just like how Squirtle had been trapped earlier.
"..."
A flicker of interest appeared in Sabrina's eyes.
Seeing the bewildered look on the Mr. Mime, now trapped by the Light Screens it had created, Ash laughed. A look of certain victory appeared on his face as he commanded in a deep voice, "Now it's our turn! Squirtle, prepare to use Skull Bash!"
This was a major Normal-type move. Its power was not much less than Giga Impact's, but its only drawback was that it required some time to charge up.
But it was perfectly suited for the current situation!
"Squirtle..."
A brilliant white light flared on Squirtle's head as its energy continuously climbed!
Just as it was about to be fully charged and launched, Sabrina's lips suddenly curled into a slight smile, and she softly uttered a single sentence.
"Mr. Mime, use Ally Switch."
"Bari!"
The panicked Mr. Mime, trapped by the Light Screens, instantly changed its expression. A wicked smile suddenly appeared on its face, like some great villain. Then, with a slight beckon of its finger, a strange light enveloped both it and Squirtle.
*Swoosh!*
The next second, the two of them swapped places.
Mr. Mime was now on the outside, while Squirtle was back inside the walls.
Squirtle: "?"
There are skilled players who bring Ally Switch these days?
