Chapter 117

Chapter 1006: Mauville Gym, vs. Wattson!

"Yes, according to my investigation, although this city's energy source is still electricity, its power supply system is exceptionally advanced. It's fully capable of achieving a closed-loop operation within an underground city."

Wattson was an expert in the electrical field, and he knew just how terrifying the wisdom of the ancients who created this city was.

"But all of this is restricted by this switch."

Wattson pointed to the toilet-shaped rock statue before them.

This wasn't some kind of power supply system, nor was it a battery. It was just a simple switch.

Just by flipping it, this desolate city could be truly set into motion, becoming a true dream city.

For the entire Hoenn Region, this was an enormous treasure.

The current Wattson was something of a public official, so this New Mauville was also public property. He was just waiting to figure out how to open this city to the masses.

"So how do we turn it on?"

Ash scratched his head and even stepped forward to knock twice on the rock statue, "thump, thump," but there was no reaction.

Yet, for some unknown reason, he could sense a life force from within it, as if the statue were a living thing.

"I was also completely clueless at first, so this city has remained stranded beneath Mauville City, forgotten by all... until ten days ago, when the entirety of Mauville City suddenly began to tremble."

Wattson still remembered that day. The entire city had begun to shake mysteriously, yet Mauville City was not located near an earthquake fault line.

Even the nearby Mt. Chimney showed no signs of unusual activity.

Sensing the vibrations came from underground, Wattson immediately entered New Mauville to investigate.

Then, he saw this very rock statue shaking repeatedly.

It was as if someone had broken the seal, bestowing life upon this rock statue.

This also gave Wattson a new intuition.

The stuck switch could now be moved.

"And since that day, this is the action that needs to be performed in front of the statue... Give me a hand, Magneton."

"Ton-ton~!"

The nearby Magneton understood, flying slowly in front of the statue.

Bzzzt!!

A magnetic force erupted, and a layer of blue current burst forth from its body, spreading outward.

Bzzz...!!

Although it was an ordinary Discharge move, the rock statue, as if sensing the electric current's presence, began to shake visibly.

"Is something about to come out...?"

"But it feels like something is still missing...?"

Ash and the other two looked at each other, a similar feeling surfacing in their minds.

As the Discharge move ended, the rock statue stopped trembling, as if nothing had happened at all.

"So an electric shock is the key to opening this statue's switch?"

Brock stroked his chin. Now he completely understood.

This was why after witnessing the power of Ash's Pikachu, Wattson had requested that Ash send out Pikachu for the battle, and had even chosen this location.

"The force of my Pokémon's electricity is still a bit weak... But if it's a collision between two electric attacks, it might really be able to open this switch!"

Wattson's gaze was fervent.

Speaking of which, this rock statue was rather like the mechanical Raikou he had invented, sensitive to powerful electric shocks.

"In that case, let's start the battle right away! I want to see what happens too!"

Ash's eyes lit up as well. He would never refuse a full-power battle.

Just in front of this rock statue was an open space the size of a standard battlefield, perfect to serve as the arena for the Gym Challenge.

Wattson and Ash, sharing a mutual understanding, stood several meters apart, facing each other from a distance.

"The rules for the match are 2v2. The winner is decided when both of one side's Pokémon are unable to battle!"

Wattson announced loudly. Although his purpose was to use the clash of electricity to activate the city, the Gym Challenge was still his duty, and he couldn't be careless.

Whoosh!

The same Magneton that had used Discharge earlier flew down slowly in front of Wattson. It seemed to be his first Pokémon.

"2v2, huh..."

Ash pondered. If one of them had to be Pikachu, then the other one...

"I choose you, Swellow!!"

Ash threw a Poké Ball with a flick of his wrist, sending Swellow onto the battlefield.

He had already decided to let his Swellow properly face some Electric-type moves, and today it could finally make its official debut.

"Swellow?"

But this sight made Wattson's scalp tingle.

An Ash from Pallet Town with a Pikachu... could this be the same young Elite Four trainer he'd seen on TV before?

How could he not even understand basic type effectiveness?

Wait, had he mistaken him for someone else?

Bringing a stranger he had only met that day into this dream city was a big risk. Wattson had only dared to bring them down after thoroughly researching Ash.

However, looking at the Swellow before him, brimming with fighting spirit, Wattson could only go all out.

The battle begins!

"Swellow, use Quick Attack!!"

As the battle started, Ash seized the initiative.

Regardless of the opponent's Steel-type resistance to Normal-type moves, he'd deal some damage first.

Swish-thud!!

Swellow's body shot forward like an arrow, crashing directly into the upper part of Magneton's body, but the impact sent a painful vibration through its own beak.

It's not very effective...

"Magneton, use Discharge!!"

Wattson, however, showed no such restraint, immediately using a super-effective Electric-type move.

Bzzzt-whoosh!!

In an instant, countless blue bolts of lightning transformed into a dense web of fine threads, shooting towards Swellow.

This Magneton's lightning was a pale blue, negative-polarity current, different from Pikachu's.

"Dodge it with Double Team!!"

Swellow circled in the sky, its form instantly multiplying into a dozen figures.

Bzzzt-whoosh...!

Bzzzt-whoosh...!

The area-of-effect Discharge pierced through all the clones. Swellow barely dodged the final bolt with a sideways barrel roll.

"But this power..."

Ash frowned inwardly. The power of this Discharge was far more ferocious than the one from before.

"Beep. Magneton's Ability: Analytic. If it moves after its opponent, the power of its attack increases."

The Pokédex suddenly interjected.

This meant that if it moved second, the power of its moves would increase.

"So Magneton has an Ability like that?"

Ash was slightly stunned. It was a Pokémon from his home region, but this was the first time he had heard of this Ability.

Bzzz!

Sensing the powerful electricity, the rock statue on the side began to vibrate steadily.

This sight brought a joyous expression to Wattson's face, and he attacked again.

"Continue using Discharge!!"

A dense web of blue electricity spread across the sky above the battlefield, forcing Swellow into a hasty retreat. It could only use Double Team to dodge again.

The combination of Steel and Electric types had it completely pinned down.
