Chapter 1005: The Desolate City and the Switch

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

"Ding! Arriving at New Mauville!"

As the automated announcement sounded, the elevator doors opened.

Ash and his friends, their curiosity completely piqued, hurriedly stepped out of the elevator, eager to see the legendary "New Mauville."

However, the scene that met their eyes left the three of them frozen in place.

"Whoa, incredible...!"

They gasped, their expressions filled with shock.

This was no mere secret underground base before them.

It was an incredibly vast space, stretching out as far as the eye could see, surrounded by countless towering buildings.

Streets, buildings, plants—all the elements of a city were here.

This was an entire city, built underground!

Not only that, but the architectural style of this underground city was remarkably novel and fashionable. There were even elevated vehicle tracks built in mid-air. This was exactly the image of a "future metropolis" that Ash and the others had in their minds!

So "New Mauville" was literally a new Mauville City!?

Although they were only in one corner of the city and couldn't see the end, they estimated its area might not be any smaller than Mauville City on the surface.

The ceiling above was a rock wall that looked like a layer of clouds, separating it from the world on the surface.

"This is unbelievable..."

"Mr. Wattson, is this a city you built?!"

Ash was completely bewildered, momentarily forgetting about his Gym Challenge.

To build another city hundreds of meters beneath an existing one... it was simply unimaginable!

"Ahaha! This is no miracle I could possibly construct."

Wattson just laughed heartily, waving his hand.

However, he was very pleased with the shocked expressions on their faces.

"Well then, I'll tell you. In fact, this 'New Mauville' is a dreamlike city built by the ancients!"

"The ancients?"

The trio was slightly taken aback. How had the tone of the conversation suddenly turned so mystical?

Next, under Wattson's guidance, Ash and his friends slowly walked toward the center of the city.

Along the way, Wattson explained the origin of the city to them.

"Actually, I used to be an employee of Great Mauville Enterprise... Hmm, although that enterprise later went out of business."

At this point, Wattson sighed lightly, as if the desperate competitive situation with the Devon Corporation back then was still fresh in his memory.

Although he was part of Great Mauville Enterprise, he had to admit that the company had become completely deranged in its later stages...

"And the project I was in charge of was this 'New Mauville'."

Ash and his friends were stunned, not expecting this matter to be related to the Greater Mauville Holdings.

"So, was this underground city built by Greater Mauville Holdings? That's also quite amazing..." Brock couldn't help but say.

However, he had found it strange from the beginning. Such a huge city was completely empty and incredibly silent.

The surfaces of the fashionable, high-tech buildings were even covered in a thick layer of dust.

Clearly, this was a desolate city, devoid of any life.

It wasn't just that no humans or Pokémon lived here... it was a different kind of strange, deathly stillness, carrying a suffocating atmosphere.

"You're overthinking it. If Greater Mauville Holdings could build an underground city like this, they wouldn't have lost to the Devon Corporation."

Wattson shook his head. The manpower, resources, and even the technology required for such a city were beyond what modern people could support.

Of course, if an entire region devoted all its efforts, perhaps it could barely be built.

"Actually, this is a legend that has been passed down in the Hoenn Region since ancient times... The legend says that the great ancients built a dreamlike city underground for a certain purpose."

Wattson spoke slowly, as if telling a story.

"So, Greater Mauville Holdings named the operation to find this dreamlike underground city 'New Mauville'..."

It was ironic, really. If Greater Mauville Holdings had found this dreamlike city back then, they might have truly made a comeback and avoided such a complete defeat.

But their years of searching had all been in vain.

Then, on the day after Greater Mauville Holdings went bankrupt, Wattson, who had resigned from the company, was strolling on the outskirts of Mauville City when he simply found the dreamlike city located right beneath his hometown.

So he named this city New Mauville.

"So this is a creation of the ancient people? Unbelievable..."

Brock looked around at this city, which was brimming with a sense of technology.

This was too incredible. How could the ancients have possessed such technology and capability!

"And what was their purpose? Perhaps to escape a disaster on the surface? Or maybe they simply wanted to withdraw from the world? I don't know either..."

Wattson shook his head. This city was completely empty, without any written records, as clean as a blank sheet of paper.

If only he could travel through time, he could witness the world of these ancient people who possessed technology surpassing that of modern times...

After some conversation, the group had a general understanding of the city's origins.

However, Wattson choosing this place for the Gym challenge was once again puzzling.

"Follow me. You'll understand when we get there."

Wattson simply quickened his pace, seemingly heading for the center of this New Mauville.

A dozen or so minutes later, the group arrived at a central park in New Mauville.

Strangely, even though there was no sun underground, green trees and vegetation were still growing here. It could be said to be the only sign of life in this city.

"There's not a single Pokémon here."

Walking all this way, Ash was surprised to find that there wasn't even a bug or a rat here. It was very strange.

"That's because this city... hasn't been turned on yet."

Wattson spoke a riddle, leaving the others dumbfounded.

A city is a city. How could there be a switch to turn it on and off?

It wasn't until they reached the plaza of this park—a spacious plaza with nothing much in it, save for a massive rock statue standing at its edge, which looked rather bizarre.

It was a gray stone statue with only an upper body, and one could vaguely make out a semi-humanoid silhouette.

Two clay-like arms were crossed in front of its chest.

Its head and body were arranged with an incomprehensible pattern of dots.

"What is...?"

Ash and his friends stared blankly at the rock sculpture, completely unable to tell what kind of Pokémon it was.

"This is the switch for this city!"

Wattson said in a solemn tone.

New Mauville was currently a desolate city. Even if it were announced to the public, it would be completely uninhabitable for humans.

The ancient people had built such a dreamlike city... so naturally, they had also prepared a source of energy for it.

After so many years of research, Wattson already had a rough idea that the energy used by this city was still electrical power, not some new form of energy.

And this rock sculpture before them was the key—the switch that could connect the entire city's electrical grid, allowing it to function normally!

"I've studied it for years without a single clue... but ten days ago, this rock sculpture suddenly moved on its own!"

A look of ecstasy gradually spread across Wattson's face.

Ash and his friends did a quick calculation. Ten days ago was about the time they left Dewford Town and were at sea, heading to Slateport City...

"Speaking of which, around that time, I think Mr. Steven Stone went to Mossdeep City to do something?" Ash muttered to himself.
