Chapter 691: Magic Must Be Eradicated
October 19, 2022 Author: Great Demon Spirit
The Spectre is an absolutely formidable character in DC Comics.
He is the most powerful Spirit of Vengeance, far surpassing Marvel's Ghost Rider. His duty is to judge sin, and once The Spectre sets his sights on a sin in the mortal world, almost no one can escape.
Possessing a corpse is one of his abilities. The Spectre's favorite thing to do is find a suitable corpse to possess and then carry out his various actions.
This time, he came to the Earth of the main universe for an unknown purpose.
"Investigating the New God is one of my objectives; it has been far too long since a New God appeared."
The Spectre walked upon Earth's surface, countless scenes flowing through his eyes. Nothing happening on this planet could escape his notice.
Except for certain matters concerning Tony, which were obscured and blurred by the noble power of the One-Above-All, nothing else could hide from The Spectre.
"The New God has a violent temper; he won't let you get away with it," the Phantom Stranger, dressed in formal attire, said in a deep voice as he followed behind.
The Phantom Stranger was The Spectre's friend, his origin even more mysterious. He had appeared in many major events and possessed equally formidable power.
"Then let him come," The Spectre replied. "Everything I do is without selfish motives, entirely to better fulfill my duties. If he becomes entangled, I won't mind judging him as well. He, too, carries a vast amount of sin. Across countless universes, I can still hear the wails of numerous lost souls from him."
The Phantom Stranger frowned: "A One-Above-All without sin simply doesn't exist. Which One-Above-All didn't eliminate countless Doppelgängers to ascend to their position?"
If truly measured by the standards of a Spirit of Vengeance, then all One-Above-Alls are born with sin.
Were there no innocents among those countless Doppelgängers? If a One-Above-All's nature is evil, were there no good people among his Doppelgängers?
Yes, and quite a few.
"This is the drawback of a native of the multiverse ascending to become a One-Above-All. If it were those from the Sphere of the Gods becoming gods, they wouldn't need to worry about the Doppelgänger issue. They can ascend to become the One-Above-All with their multiversal life-form. The New God is one of a kind, and also the most inherently evil."
The Spectre's face was indifferent. The slight emotions he displayed through the Old Bartender's body seemed perfectly fitting.
Yet, this very "fitting" would instead provoke immense humiliation and rage in some people.
The Phantom Stranger looked at the stubborn The Spectre and sighed helplessly.
"Don't worry about me, Phantom Stranger. As long as he doesn't come looking for trouble, I will merely observe quietly," The Spectre said nonchalantly.
One of his tasks in coming to the main universe was to scrutinize the New God, to observe what kind of person this New God truly was – one who had been causing trouble since birth and repeatedly shaking the Sphere of the Gods – and what he would bring to this boundless world.
A native of the multiverse achieving godhood, a One-Above-All who wouldn't be deliberately repelled by the Speed Force Wall... within the multiverse, this was simply the greatest calamity.
Just give the New God some time, and he would rapidly grow. The entire multiverse would become the New God's personal garden, where he could kill, create, and play as he pleased, and there would be no way to deal with him.
This was also why The Spectre's form of existence was special; as a Spirit of Vengeance, he was inherently an arbiter existing within the multiverse.
The Phantom Stranger said helplessly, "Unless absolutely necessary, don't conflict with the New God. It's not worth it."
The Spectre nodded. In an instant, he had already arrived at Kamar-Taj.
Stephen, who was cultivating magic with his eyes closed, suddenly opened them: "Who!"
"Magic..."
The Spectre's face was expressionless. His form silently vanished, and the next second, he reappeared among various major magic families, Madame Xanadu, Zatanna, A.R.G.U.S....
He even crossed the rifts of space-time, arriving in Wizard Shazam's Rock of Eternity.
The aged and frail Old Shazam, with not many days left, slowly raised his head. His cloudy eyes were full of vigilance. He assessed The Spectre, having long seen through the meaningless external shell to the immense power within.
"The Spectre... I've read records of you in ancient texts."
Shazam slowly rose, leaning on his staff.
"A semblance of magic... using the power of six gods as its source, but because some of these gods have died, your power has inevitably weakened."
The Spectre commented dispassionately.
Back then, Amatsu-Mikaboshi purged the various pantheons of the main universe. The six gods that Wizard Shazam relied upon were almost entirely slaughtered by Amatsu-Mikaboshi. Shazam thus lost his energy source, able to barely maintain his strength with only his remaining divine power and accumulated mystic energy.
But this was only temporary. As long as a New God was willing to take over and infuse Shazam with divine power, Shazam would welcome a new life.
Shazam himself was a "profession" passed down through generations. Each Shazam was an energy containment vessel, a veritable jack-of-all-trades.
"State your purpose!" Shazam opened his eyes, a savage chill bursting forth. He gripped his staff and spoke in a repressed, hoarse voice.
"Magic is a scourge. Earth will fall into prolonged chaos because of magic. Countless crises have arisen due to magic, and countless disasters have been magnified by the addition of magical power," The Spectre said.
Shazam paused, then said, "Bullshit."
The Spectre said indifferently, "You are the most powerful sorcerer on this planet. It begins with you. Shazam will become history starting today."
Old Shazam's face, covered by a full head of flowing white hair, revealed a stern coldness. For thousands of years, he had lurked in the Rock of Eternity. The last time he took action was to team up with the Ancient One, storming into the Dark Dimension to cripple Dormammu.
Dazzling light burst forth from the aging Old Shazam. Fierce arcs of electricity whistled up, coiling around Old Shazam, illuminating the dim Rock of Eternity. Countless powerful spells, transformed into long snakes, surged and slammed towards The Spectre.
But The Spectre merely tilted his head, and those roaring powerful forces slammed into other directions, as if an invisible giant hand had pushed them away.
The Spectre reached out, seized the weakened Shazam, and then his hand passed directly through Shazam's body, grasping the inner ball of energy, and yanked hard.
Old Shazam let out a scream and a roar. The Spectre ignored him, simply tossing him aside.
"You're playing with fire," the Phantom Stranger appeared like a wraith.
"I must do this. The future of this universe will undergo significant changes because of magic. I must nip the disaster in the bud."
"Because of the New God?"
"Perhaps, perhaps not. But it is true that magical power will cause great upheaval," The Spectre said.
Old Shazam panted rapidly, a deep sneer appearing on his grim face: "Interfering in the present based on the contents of a prophecy? A despicable facade."
"You will understand. Magic will trigger a great war among many ancient gods, bringing about an even greater disaster," The Spectre said indifferently.
