Chapter 336: Invasion of Odym
A few minutes ago, on the planet Odym, headquarters of the Blue Lantern Corps.
"In the day of fear, in the night of pain, let blazing fires repel the biting chill. When all are lost in the flames of war, look to the stars—the Light of Hope will never die!"
Saint Walker raised his Power Ring, leading the Blue Lanterns behind him to point at the massive Central Power Battery.
As the oath was spoken, a pillar of blue light shot into the sky, like a sharp sword piercing the heavens. A faint blue glow enveloped every Blue Lantern, and the energy of Hope surged into their bodies through their Power Rings like a warm current.
This was to charge the Central Power Battery, but it was also a ritual. They shared their hope with one another, ensuring the light in everyone's heart would never be extinguished.
Once the charging was complete, a Blue Lantern eagerly flew forward and embraced Saint Walker.
"Welcome home, Saint Walker! You have no idea how much we missed you!"
"That's how we all feel," said a Blue Lantern from behind. "Especially the new members who have been eager to meet the Leader of the Lantern Corps."
"I am no Leader. I was merely the first one discovered by Master Ganthet," Saint Walker said. "I may have been granted an honor, but I am no more special than anyone else in this Corps."
Hearing this, the rookie Blue Lanterns nearby were even more filled with admiration, whispering amongst themselves, "Look, even the Leader's humility makes him seem so extraordinary..."
Since Orin Vale's departure, the Blue Lantern Corps has made it their mission to spread Hope. They travel through the various sectors of the universe, saving people, spreading Hope, and at the same time, seeking out others who harbor hope and are willing to join them.
Today, the Blue Lantern Corps had grown to a considerable size. The new recruits were all trained by Brother Warth, the veteran, elephant-like Blue Lantern. They had lit the Light of Hope on Odym, and the reputation of their Corps spread along with it.
"So, I hear you found a yellow Power Ring on this trip?" asked the Blue Lantern Sheen.
"Yes, it's right here."
Saint Walker gestured to his side. The blue light barrier he had created still enveloped the yellow Power Ring. The fear energy had long been depleted by Saint Walker's Light of Hope, and the Power Ring floated there quietly.
"What does this mean? Is the time Master Ganthet spoke of coming?" Sheen asked.
"I don't know, but we all need to be prepared. Ganthet and Sayd, the founders of our sacred church, have left Odym. They have other matters to attend to," Saint Walker said. "So whatever is about to happen next, we must face it ourselves."
Sheen nodded in agreement. "This is the very reason for our existence. No matter what the universe faces in the future, we must carefully protect the Light of Hope. As long as there is hope, there will always be a way out, just as they have high hopes for us..."
All the Blue Lanterns expressed their agreement.
"Even if it's not about the prophecy, there are still so many people in this world who need our help, so much suffering we must eliminate. It's far from time to rest."
As the Blue Lanterns were discussing, their Power Rings suddenly blared an alarm in unison.
"Warning, a Warp Gate is forming above the planet's atmosphere..."
"Multiple targets have breached the atmosphere. Odym is under invasion."
The faces of all the Blue Lanterns changed.
"Invaders?"
Saint Walker's expression turned solemn as he took the lead and shot into the sky. He transformed into a beam of blue light, ascending from the forest, and was startled by the scene in mid-air.
It was the Yellow Lanterns.
A massive number of Yellow Lanterns broke through the atmosphere one after another, rushing toward the location of the Central Power Battery at the maximum speed permissible within the atmosphere.
"Is that the Yellow Lantern Corps?" a new Blue Lantern asked nervously. "But why...?"
"Perhaps because we're the color of the Emotional Spectrum they despise the most," said Brother Warth. "Our numbers are far fewer than theirs, but do not be afraid. Master Ganthet taught us that on the spectrum, the Yellow Lanterns of Fear are countered by our power."
"We just need to hold on to hope, and we can all get through this together. Rookies, stay close to me!"
"Understood!"
The Blue Lantern recruits also rose into the air, the blue light surrounding them connecting, as if forming a bulwark of hope.
In terms of energy level, the Blue Lantern Corps is the strongest of the Seven Lantern Corps, but in practical combat ability, they are last. This is because "hope without the willpower to enact it is meaningless." Most of the Blue Lanterns' combat functions can only be activated when near a Green Lantern. Normally, they act as support; while their energy reserves are vast, their innate abilities lack offensive power.
But when facing Yellow Lanterns, their purification technique is sufficient. By eliminating fear and depleting the energy of the yellow Power Ring, the opponent loses their combat power.
"Odym cannot fall! Everyone, gather as much hope as you can..."
Saint Walker took the lead, charging toward the ranks of the Yellow Lanterns.
"...and fight for our sacred church!"
The first few Yellow Lanterns in the charge all raised their Power Rings, and various Yellow Lantern constructs came surging forward. But Saint Walker's movements were nimble; flying in an S-pattern, he weaved through the ferocious, terrifying constructs and came face-to-face with a Yellow Lantern.
He threw a sudden punch. The blue light enveloping his fist clung to his entire arm, faintly transforming into the shape of a translucent fist.
The Yellow Lantern's personal energy force field shattered upon contact with the blue light, and the impact of the punch was solidly transferred to the Yellow Lantern's body. The Yellow Lantern's head snapped to the side, and his body lost its balance, plummeting downwards.
A rookie Blue Lantern behind him saw this and was astonished. "Our Power Rings don't have combat capabilities! How... how did he do that?"
"Use your Spiritual Radiance, rookie."
Brother Warth, the Blue Lantern instructor, caught up and said.
"Our Spiritual Radiance doesn't just protect us; it can also enhance our strength."
As he spoke, Brother Warth had already rushed in front of a Yellow Lantern. He swatted aside a flying snake construct launched by the Yellow Lantern, then followed up with a palm strike.
As he struck, the blue light likewise transformed into a faint, giant hand enveloping his arm. The palm hit the Yellow Lantern square in the face, and the force field on his face instantly shattered. With a muffled grunt, he tumbled backward.
"You all see that, Blue Lanterns!"
The Blue Lantern Sheen also moved forward and shouted.
"We can protect our own Corps!"
The Blue and Yellow Lantern Corps charged at each other head-on. The first shot between the different corps of the emotional spectrum was officially fired over the tranquil world of Odym.
Saint Walker continued to lead the charge deep into their ranks. Seizing an opportunity, he rushed before another Yellow Lantern and threw a straight punch wreathed in blue light.
*Pa.*
It didn't break through.
Saint Walker's fist landed squarely in the palm of the Yellow Lantern. The blue light continuously battered the barrier force field on the opponent's body, but to no effect.
No, not only was it ineffective...
"Warning, Power Ring energy level is decreasing rapidly. Current energy level is below 60%..."
Saint Walker's heart sank.
"How could this be?"
The Light of Hope eliminates Fear; this is a fundamental law of the Emotional Spectrum. But why was his own energy disappearing instead?
But in the next moment, he saw.
The Yellow Lantern before him began to distort. Like a digital skin draped over it, the Yellow Lantern's form vanished bit by bit with a flow of data.
In its place stood a figure in metal armor, with red eyes and a body of steel. Its mechanical mouth opened and closed, speaking coldly: "No one can escape..."
Saint Walker's pupils contracted.
"Blue Lanterns, be careful! The enemies aren't all Yellow Lanterns! Some of the Yellow Lanterns are in disguise! They are—Argh!"
The enemy's steel fist struck him in the abdomen. The immense force punched through his own protective field, sending a jolt of agonizing pain through his organs.
"...No one can escape the Manhunters!"
