Chapter 293: Parallax Reaction
Author: Rowing Without Oars 233
It wasn't just the Captain; the entire team—no, everyone on the planet who witnessed this scene was stunned.
The invincible monster that had left them helpless, the terrifying existence that their combined firepower couldn't even scratch, was destroyed in a single punch by this Giant of Light?
As waves of shock crashed through the Captain's mind, he was finally certain.
In that fleeting instant, the being who had moved everyone on their ship to this location the moment the explosion occurred, saving them all with such a miraculous feat—was this very entity.
After all, what were the odds of encountering two beings with such great power in one lifetime?
To onlookers, the monster was killed instantly, but Orin Vale had actually taken the time to carefully observe and scan the creature before he threw the punch. It was just that his observation and thought processes were so fast that to others, it all happened in a flash.
And he had roughly figured out the monster's origins.
The thing was originally a local creature; most of the elements he found in the monster matched the native characteristics of Axolor. But it had been infected. There was a faint trace of energy from a fragment of the Fear Spectrum within its body. It wasn't very strong, but the scan had definitely picked it up.
So, this thing's condition was actually similar to that of Hector from the Green Lantern movie, who had been infected by a fragment of Parallax. Just as Hector, who was merely a mortal, gained a superpower that could rival a Green Lantern after being infected, this creature had also mutated into such a powerful form under the influence of the fragment's power.
After instantly killing the monster, Orin Vale also absorbed the residual energy of the fragment.
He even briefly considered that if he collected enough of these fragments, he might be able to use the Emotional Spectrum technology he possessed to refine them and piece together a Yellow Lantern ring.
After finishing up, Orin Vale turned to face the awestruck people of Axolor below. He thought for a moment, then decided to follow the Oan Race's convention. He gave a mysterious, Ultraman-style nod, then shot up into the sky with a whoosh, creating a sonic boom in mid-air before vanishing without a trace into the heavens.
Long after he disappeared, the people of Axolor remained, their heads tilted up, their gazes fixed on the spot where he had vanished.
The Giant of Light from space. It seemed this legend would not fade from the planet Axolor for at least the next century.
Several other coordinates in the galaxy were marked with similar reactions.
Once upon a time, he thought the galaxy was a vast place, but that was long in the past. At his current speed and with his perspective, the entire interstellar sector was just a tiny spot, let alone a single galaxy.
Besides, his clone's work didn't interfere with his other tasks. Having gradually mastered the wonders of multitasking across two locations, Orin Vale now had plenty of time to figure out what scheme Parallax was plotting.
He was beginning to understand more and more why multiversal powerhouses loved to deploy clones all over the universe—it was truly convenient and efficient.
With a few interstellar jumps, he quickly visited all the remaining coordinates he'd found in the galaxy. In each case, he discovered super-powered individuals on different planets who had been infected by a similar Fear Spectrum reaction.
Along the way, Orin Vale casually dealt with all of them, collecting every energy fragment and simultaneously spreading the legend of the Giant of Light.
If his name had only spread among higher-level civilizations after his battle with Darkseid, this time it was mainly among secondary civilizations.
Before long, the entire galaxy would slowly come to accept this small dose of Ultraman-style shock and awe.
And at this very moment, the culprit behind this "Giant of Light's Interstellar Day Trip," the embodiment of fear, the Yellow Lantern entity Parallax, was resting in a dark corner of the galaxy.
It wasn't actually its intention to stay here. To be honest, if it had a choice, after the thorough beating it took in the solar system, it would have wanted to be as far away from this place as possible.
Thinking back on it now, Parallax felt it was cursed with the worst luck. In such a vast universe, it hadn't seen any sign of the Hope Spectrum for so many years. Yet, just when it had regained its freedom, and in the very place it was planning to stir up trouble, it had run head-on into that impossibly powerful giant.
Honestly, if the backup its opponent had summoned back then had been the Green Lantern entity, Ion, Parallax felt it might have had a fighting chance.
But some things are simply not meant to be, and even a being as powerful as an entity was helpless against a streak of bad luck. As a result, its last physical form was smashed to bits, and it had to start over from scratch. And now, because the place it died was in the solar system, even though it had absorbed energy from the Fear Spectrum to reform its physical form, it was still not far from the area.
It was too weak; it couldn't make an interstellar jump. The galaxy wasn't that big, but trying to fly out of it would probably take forever.
So, it temporarily found a place to hide, concealed its presence, and painfully separated a portion of the little power it had just managed to coalesce, releasing it into the surroundings. It hoped to infect some individuals and have them feed some fear energy back to it.
It didn't need much energy. All of its grand ambitions from when it had just regained its freedom, like storming Oa and conquering the universe, had vanished the moment it learned of the Hope Spectrum's revival.
Now, it only hoped to save up enough power to make an interstellar jump, to get a ticket out of this troublesome place.
Parallax released the fragments, then waited patiently… and waited…
As it waited, it began to feel that something was wrong.
Wait, where are my fragments? How has so much time passed with no response at all?
Did they get lost?
"Is this the last one?"
Orin Vale held a creature that looked like a giant armored crab in his hand, hovering in mid-air as the inhabitants of a certain planet stared at him as if he were a god-like being.
"It seems so, sir," Pal replied. "There are no other similar Fear Spectrum energy reactions for now. But the warship is still executing the scan program. I will notify you immediately if the radar picks up a new signal."
"Alright… so what do you think these fragments look like they're doing?"
Orin Vale tossed the giant monster into the air with one hand and casually followed up with an Ultra Shot, blasting it to dust in mid-air.
Of course, he didn't forget to extract the Fear Fragment within and collect that portion of energy as well.
"Theoretically, it looks like an intentional effort to create fear," Pal said. "Collecting and capturing the emotion of fear can accelerate the absorption of Yellow Lantern Spectrum energy."
"My thoughts exactly… Could it be that Parallax is still somewhere around here?" Orin Vale said.
"That possibility cannot be ruled out. However, no similar reaction has been detected for now. The radar is scanning."
Orin Vale thought for a moment.
"It might be hiding deliberately… But do this: mark the discovery coordinate of every Fear Fragment found so far. Parallax must have had a central point from which it released the fragments. If we simulate the release curve of all the fragments, we might be able to calculate the possible location of its main body."
Although Parallax was hiding well, its concealment so thorough as to evade direct radar sweeps, he could still use calculation and deduction.
He didn't need a precise location. As long as he could mark out a few possible general areas, Orin Vale could fly over and investigate them one by one, giving him a good chance of finding it.
"Understood, sir."
As Orin Vale spoke, he had already flown away from this planet and was heading towards the edge of the galaxy.
"Alright, it looks like we've found everything we needed to. We should be able to head back now… Hmm, what's that over there?"
He slowed down slightly, expanding his Super Senses, trying to catch a faint disturbance that had flashed past the edge of his vision.
It seemed like the stirrings of a battle, and it felt quite intense.
"Comparing with the star map… We have already entered the starfield under Almerac's jurisdiction, sir," Pal said. "Should we go take a look?"
