Chapter 187

Chapter 185: Nemesis

2022-10-19 Author: Great Demon Spirit

Zzzt!

"Disgusting things!"

A blindingly thick bolt of electricity flashed in an instant, brutally illuminating the dark corner with a current so terrifying it seemed to scorch the air.

The few humanoid creatures hiding in the gloomy corner were like tiny snowflakes facing a fire; though they flickered for a moment, they were melted away in a brief instant.

Those humanoid creatures were deathly pale all over, as if no blood flowed beneath their pallid skin, making them resemble bloated, desiccated corpses. These things shrieked and howled, and with a single leap, they could jump over a dozen meters high, landing on both hands and feet. One of them even opened its mouth, which split open from the chin, making its entire maw resemble a disgusting, sticky, slimy flower bud, revealing multiple layers of sharp teeth within.

This was a completely new species, said to have escaped from the deepest parts of the Vampire Kingdom. They could reproduce their kind at an exponential rate.

But no matter how many times stronger these creatures were than Vampires, they were still a new species evolved from them and had not shed their weakness to sunlight.

Unfortunately for them, these things had encountered their most terrifying natural enemy—Electro.

Sunlight? Ultraviolet rays? Max was practically made of them! He was a walking repository of electrical current. Even if he just stood there doing nothing, the faint ultraviolet rays emitted by the electricity flowing through his body could easily annihilate these disgusting creatures.

Electro was the natural nemesis of Vampires and these new types of vampires.

"Good job, Max!"

The Old Bartender, fully armed, sent a new type of vampire flying with a gunshot. But the silver bullet failed to cause any harm to the pale creature. It jumped up from where it stood as if nothing had happened, let out a ferocious shriek, and was about to pounce on the Old Bartender to kill him.

Max casually tossed a current of electricity, electrocuting the thing to ash.

"We're family. I'll do everything I can to help you," Max said very seriously.

Some time had passed since Tony secretly departed for the Himalayan Mountains, supposedly in search of some strange and hard-to-pronounce location. To many people's surprise, this period had been calm and uneventful, with nothing out of the ordinary happening.

The entire world seemed to have fallen quiet, at least overtly. It was like the tranquility before a more violent storm, brewing a power capable of destroying the world.

It was too quiet. No one was jumping out to stir up trouble, let alone going on a killing spree or launching a major attack over some significant event.

The daily headlines of the major news outlets were filled with content that, in the eyes of interested parties, was completely trivial—things like Tony Stark going missing in Afghanistan, or one country holding talks with another.

Even the Brotherhood of Mutants, which had always been so active, had vanished without a trace, rumored to be busy with something in the shadows.

It seemed that ever since the sorcerers had publicly emerged, the world had suddenly gone silent. Everyone was watching from the sidelines, while various conspiracies and schemes were being hatched in the dark.

Electro, with his strange ability of Electrokinesis, would often blend into electrical wires and cables, wandering aimlessly. In doing so, he had overheard some interesting things.

For example, someone was secretly searching for information about Wizard Shazam. Then, from somewhere else, news spread that a flaming Ghost Rider was on a killing spree.

It was all strange and bizarre news.

Max's mind was simple. This boring news meant nothing to him. He was more concerned about whether anyone posed a threat to his family or to Tony.

Unfortunately, he hadn't intercepted any relevant messages. The only thing he heard was actually good news: someone in the Military was studying Tony's military rank, and they seemed to be in a bind, unsure of what to do.

This was a small matter. Max was relieved that no villains were scheming against them.

Of course, deep down, Max also knew this was just wishful thinking. There had to be people with malicious intent, but he just couldn't detect them. Since the world knew that Tony had someone like Electro under his command, how could they not take precautions?

The simplest method was to just rip out all the electrical circuits.

"I wonder when I'll be able to become what Mr. Tony hopes for—to be everywhere, turning my body into individual free electrons floating in the air."

Max would sometimes mutter to himself, feeling rather helpless. That level was incredibly difficult to achieve. He couldn't even completely shake off his craving for electrical cables yet. For the act of "eating," he still had to rely on absorbing electricity from cables. He could only slightly reduce his dependence, absorbing a few free electrons from the air as a supplement.

He couldn't absorb much, though. He still mainly relied on cables to eat.

It was perfectly normal for Tony's house to have occasional power outages.

This peaceful life was shattered by a phone call. It was the Old Bartender, whom he hadn't contacted in a while, saying bluntly that he needed Max to come and help.

"A new trouble has emerged. A super-species of Vampire has appeared. They prey on both Humans and ordinary Vampires, and they're immune to everything except sunlight. Not only is their life force dozens of times greater than an ordinary Vampire's, but their reproduction rate is even more ridiculous!"

According to the Old Bartender, he was now with Blade and the others, and had even joined forces with ordinary Vampires to fight against these creatures, which they had named "Reapers."

Max immediately rushed over to the Old Bartender's location, met up with Blade and the others, and began to slaughter the Reapers.

In just a few days, a single Brood Mother had spawned thousands of Reapers within the filthy and complex underground pipe system.

The speed at which these things reproduced was terrifyingly fast. Whether Human or Vampire, a single bite was enough for a successful transformation within tens of minutes, turning the victim into a crazed monster devoid of reason and intelligence, able only to passively obey the Brood Mother's commands.

One bite. All it took was a single bite from a Reaper to be inevitably transformed into a ghastly thing with no memory, emotion, or reason.

No wonder the Vampire Kingdom, having just barely stabilized, was now frantically trying to encircle and annihilate these new types of vampires, willing to pay any price in casualties. They were even willing to bring in a Vampire Hunter like Blade for reinforcement.

More and more unknown factions secretly joined the brutal war. Facing the new vampires that were immune to silver bullets and garlic, the number of casualties was rapidly expanding. If the wounded couldn't be executed immediately, they would be transformed into one of the enemy.

There were frequent cases of entire squads being wiped out because one person concealed their injuries.
