Chapter 404: Birth
Necrofriggians, while not particularly aggressive aliens, become completely ruthless when they enter their spawning season. Anyone who dares to intrude upon their nest will be met with a fierce attack.
Of course, this didn't apply to himself. Although one was currently Big Chill and the other Supreme Celestial, both were ultimately clones of Yang Le, essentially the same person. Big Chill wouldn't subconsciously lash out at himself.
Therefore, Yang Le had the fortunate opportunity to record the entire egg-laying process of the Necrofriggian from a third-person perspective. This would be of considerable help for his future alien hero research, and who knew, he might even be able to hatch other alien hero youngling from it.
The Big Chill constructing the nest paid no attention to the audience beside him, single-mindedly focused on building his nest. Just as birds use saliva to bind together the ingredients they gather, Big Chill utilized powerful stomach acid to melt the metal he consumed into liquid metal.
The majority of this liquid metal would replenish the nutrition Big Chill needed for production, while a smaller portion would be regurgitated to build the nest.
Logically, a Necrofriggian in its spawning season would spend several days hunting, as they require vast amounts of nutrition. However, because Supreme Celestial had supplemented Big Chill with a significant amount of Celestial energy, this phase was shortened.
Otherwise, relying solely on a blast door, dozens of guns, and half a car's worth of metal, might only have been enough for Big Chill to construct the nest.
Big Chill's nest construction process consisted of only two steps. First, he regurgitated the melted liquid metal. Second, he used cold wind to cool and solidify the liquid metal, shaping it in the process to gradually create the nest he envisioned.
The gene recorded by the Little Broken Watch was indeed the healthiest among its kin. Big Chill's maternal instincts were also fully engaged. The nest construction speed was remarkably fast, yet the quality didn't suffer for it. In about ten minutes, a spiral shape metal nest appeared on the sand.
Because the metal consumed was so varied, the nest ended up looking multicolored, like a modern art piece.
Big Chill nodded, retracted his wings, and sat down contentedly in the center of the nest, within the pit of roughly one meter radius he had prepared beforehand. The nest was complete; now it was time for egg-laying.
Replenished with a large amount of Celestial energy, Big Chill was exceptionally healthy, and even the birthing process was remarkably smooth. Supreme Celestial could see a pool of green viscous liquid flowing from within Big Chill's enveloping wings, filling the entire pit at a visible speed.
"Glug, glug!"
Like a balloon released underwater, the thick green liquid began to bubble rhythmically.
Based on Ben's egg-laying display, Yang Le surmised that this green viscous liquid was likely akin to amniotic fluid, serving to protect Big Chill and the eggs he produced, possibly even providing energy to the yet-to-be-born embryo.
The continuous bubbling indicated that Big Chill was now depositing eggs into the mucus. Supreme Celestial, realizing this, counted them, and the result astonished him.
According to Supreme Celestial's rough count, this Big Chill had laid approximately fifteen eggs. This far exceeded his expectations. Suddenly possessing fifteen offspring, Yang Le could now be considered to have a full house of descendants.
Once egg-laying was complete, Big Chill rose from the viscous liquid. Despite the green liquid's viscosity, not a single drop clung to Big Chill. Flying out of the nest, Big Chill regurgitated liquid metal once more, sealing the nest with a metal top seal, and then settled directly above the nest, patiently awaiting the birth of his children.
Necrofriggian hatching typically takes two to three days, relatively short for creatures, but for Yang Le, it felt like an agonizingly long wait. He genuinely felt a father's mood.
And so, time flew by in Supreme Celestial's anxious anticipation.
When Yang Le, transformed into Big Chill, regained control of his body, three days had passed. This signified that it was time for the Necrofriggian babies to hatch.
Despite it being his first time giving birth to a baby, Yang Le, with some innate understanding, immediately grasped what had transpired upon waking and seeing the nest beneath him.
"It seems the entire egg-laying process went very smoothly," Yang Le murmured to himself, bending down to tear open the nest's top seal and release his soon-to-hatch children.
However, before he could tear the top seal, his peripheral vision caught sight of Supreme Celestial, who had also been waiting for three days beside him, startling him.
"You came over like this?"
"I'll explain later," Supreme Celestial replied, seeing Yang Le regain his sanity, and immediately stood up from the ground. "The priority now is to release the babies."
'It seems a lot happened while I was unconscious,' Yang Le mused inwardly, his hand already busy, using sharp claws to tear open the metal top seal.
"Glug, glug!"
The viscous liquid seemed to boil. As soon as the top seal was breached, green bubbles surged out. Upon escaping the viscous liquid, they floated into the air, gradually turning blue.
After one bubble detached from the nest, the remaining bubbles eagerly followed suit. Soon, eighteen blue bubbles drifted around Yang Le, three more than Supreme Celestial had initially counted.
Yang Le observed the first bubble to float up. As expected, its appearance was changing. Two symmetrical, large eyes appeared on the bubble, and then more biological features gradually materialized.
Like a pillbug unfurling its body, the bubble expanded, revealing a Necrofriggian larva that rapidly developed, becoming complete in the blink of an eye. Finally, a chubby mini Big Chill appeared before Yang Le.
This seemed to be a signal. The remaining seventeen bubbles also transformed into larva. In an instant, Yang Le resembled Xiang Fei from Princess Pearl, except instead of butterflies fluttering around her, chubby Necrofriggian larva floated around Yang Le.
"Look at these little guys," Yang Le said, extending his right hand to catch a larva. The little guy, cradled in Yang Le's hand, seemed happy, yet a large question mark appeared on its face.
"Necrofriggian, like fish, exhibit migratory behavior. Younglings born elsewhere will traverse the universe to return to their true hometown. This long journey is their trial, and surviving and growing strong along the way is their greatest reward."
Supreme Celestial teleported to Yang Le's side, also observing the cute little guys.
"However, the DC Universe lacks their hometown Khyber. That's why they appear so confused upon birth."
