Chapter 88
Chapter 88: Human-Race Charm! Baiting a Countermeasure
November 18, 2024 Author: Amnesty L
The moment Khajiit's smooth, bald head emerged from the Underground Passage, his indifferent gaze had already passed through the gaps in the zombie encirclement to look outside the Temple.
Bare gravestones and withered trees, with not a single undead in sight.
This made Khajiit's gaze sharpen.
He had specifically arranged some low-tier undead around the Temple, not just to deter those who carelessly approached the area, but also to serve as a warning.
There was a certain connection between a controller and their controlled undead; once that connection was severed, he would naturally perceive it.
Of course, this was an arrangement Khajiit had made when he first entered this Graveyard. But after more than a year, he found that very few people ever entered the Graveyard at all, let alone its Depths. So he had simply severed the connection.
But this was no issue; for a necromancer, even if those undead were eliminated, he could still cast magic to control them.
The prerequisite, however, was that the corpses of those undead had to be before him!
And now, the empty Graveyard showed no trace of an undead, nor were there any undead corpses present. This meant that the group of undead hadn't been eliminated, but rather lured away!
"They came prepared!"
"And it's not just one person?"
This thought flashed through Khajiit's mind, yet his expression remained perfectly calm, his gaze indifferent.
This border city of E-Rantel had no powerful Adventurer Team, and certainly no strong individuals worthy of his attention.
If there were, they could only be people from outside E-Rantel.
*You will regret choosing such a place to provoke a distinguished necromancer!*
Khajiit, emitting a dangerous aura, stepped out of the Underground Passage, and the low-tier zombies encircling him immediately dispersed.
At this moment, Khajiit immediately spotted the guardian angel hovering about a foot or two above the ground, a hundred meters away.
That irritating holy aura, and the light it emitted in this dark environment, made it hard not to notice.
It was precisely because of this overly conspicuous feature that Khajiit immediately grew wary, though not of the guardian angel itself, but of his surroundings.
"Mana Detection!"
Khajiit cast a detection spell.
Soon, the spell produced feedback.
The clearest feedback was, naturally, the mana signature of the guardian angel a hundred meters away. Besides that, there was another mana signature about fifty meters to his left.
However, within his field of vision, he could see nothing!
Suddenly, that invisible mana signature began to move, rushing toward him.
"Don't be ridiculous!"
"Do you think such a trick can fool me?"
Khajiit sneered, raising a finger and pointing toward the invisible presence to his left.
"Negative Energy Ray!"
A dark purple beam of mana bloomed from Khajiit's fingertip, shooting forth.
*Boom!*
The Negative Energy Ray easily struck the invisible figure, producing a shockwave from the magical collision that knocked the target back.
The guardian angel, hidden by the "Camouflage" effect, was struck by the magical attack. Its invisibility was dispelled, revealing its entire figure.
Khajiit was momentarily stunned to see that what appeared was a guardian angel, not a rogue or some other opponent skilled in concealment-related skills.
"Two guardian angels... Are they two divine magic casters?"
"No, was that invisibility effect just now the second-tier 'Invisibility', or some other invisibility-type spell? An arcane magic caster and a divine magic caster?"
This thought quickly flashed through Khajiit's mind.
And it was in this brief moment of distraction!
"Human-Race Charm!" Suddenly, a hoarse, middle-aged male voice sharply rang out from behind the guardian angel a hundred meters away.
"Undying Spirit!"
Khajiit's eyes widened and he hissed the words. His expression instantly changed, his gaze fixing on the guardian angel a hundred meters away as his already pale face turned ashen.
"You're playing me?"
He hadn't felt the power of a mind-control spell at all.
From the shadows, Tang Zheng, completely wrapped in a black robe with his appearance indistinguishable, exited his stealth state and stepped out from behind the guardian angel.
"Just saying hello."
Tang Zheng let out a hoarse chuckle, his gaze quickly glancing at his status panel.
...
[Skill Points: 41→40]
Skill: Undying Spirit (Tier 3)
Cost: 15 MP
Description: Grants immunity to mind-control-type skills such as Charm and Hypnosis.
...
Got it!
The things Tang Zheng was slightly wary of regarding Khajiit were, one, the Bone Dragon, and two, mind-control magic like 'Human-Race Charm'.
Just from the spell's prefix, one could feel how malicious this spell was toward the human race. Indeed, the spell was originally used by demi-humans and heteromorphs to enslave humans.
Faced with such mind-control magic, one would be quite passive without a countermeasure. Therefore, humans developed a spell that could resist this type of mind control—'Undying Spirit'!
This was also an essential tool for high-level magic casters; otherwise, once controlled, it basically signaled the end of the battle.
At this moment, Tang Zheng's hoarse laughter, to Khajiit's ears, was blatant mockery.
In his view, this was Tang Zheng probing whether he possessed a countermeasure against mind control, and incidentally, it had consumed some of his mana.
However, such a petty trick, in his eyes, was something only weaklings would do!
"Foolish fellow, you have no idea what a truly strong person is!"
Khajiit gripped the black staff in his hand tightly, his tone utterly cold. "Call out all your companions; I'm no longer interested in knowing your purpose!"
"I will make you understand the consequences of provoking me!"
The enraged voice echoed through the Graveyard.
"Companions?"
"Sorry, there aren't any."
Tang Zheng spoke hoarsely, shrugging his shoulders while simultaneously making a beckoning gesture.
The guardian angel, repelled by the Negative Energy Ray, quickly flew back. This angel's initial purpose was simply to attract Khajiit's attention.
Clearly, the plan was quite successful.
This was the result of having an informational advantage.
*Whoosh!*
With the guardian angel's return, the number of angels in front of Tang Zheng once again became two.
He glanced at this guardian angel's chest; its formerly gleaming silver armor had grown dim and was now covered in corroded, pitted marks, as if it had rusted.
The magical attack from the Negative Energy Ray was clearly very effective.
The undead have weak resistance to holy and fire attributes. And vice versa.
"Have they hidden themselves?"
"Then I'll slaughter you first, and deal with your companions later."
Khajiit naturally didn't believe Tang Zheng's words. Seeing the two guardian angels before him, he was slightly surprised.
*He can summon two angels simultaneously? Is it a special magic item, or has he specialized in summoning?*
*However, these are all useless tricks!*
"Prepare to wail, foolish one!"
"I will make you appear before your companions in the most miserable state!"
Khajiit raised the black staff in his hand and struck it sharply against the ground. At the same time, the Orb of Death in his other hand began to emit a faint black glow.
