Chapter 68: The Nervous Lachimon, He Is Not an Adventurer

At the entrance of Carne Village.

It was still surrounded by the same wooden fence, which offered little in the way of defense, unchanged from the last time he was here.

Tang Zheng's reappearance caused quite a stir among the villagers, especially the matter of him helping the Emmott family's eldest daughter carry weeds.

For the women of the village, where interesting events were few and far between, this was simply marvelous gossip.

Along the path.

Three figures walked toward the depths of the village.

“I'll have to trouble you again this time, Village Chief.” Tang Zheng said politely to the Village Chief beside him.

“There's no need to be so polite, Your Excellency.”

“The room had been cleaned out long ago. It's the same one you stayed in last time.”

The dark-skinned Village Chief quickly spoke. Although he was a bit surprised by Tang Zheng's return, there was no impatience in his voice, only a hint of reverence.

The room had already been cleaned?

Hearing the Village Chief's words, Tang Zheng's steps faltered almost imperceptibly before he continued forward.

At the same time, he glanced out of the corner of his eye at a middle-aged man walking beside the Village Chief.

The man carried a bow and arrow on his back. His right hand swung naturally with his steps, but his left hand, hidden from Tang Zheng's view, remained pressed to his waist.

Tang Zheng could clearly sense the man's nervousness. He kept glancing at the Lesser Soulhound following behind him.

Does he recognize the Evil Spirit Hound?

If he remembered correctly, the only villager in Carne Village with a Job Class was named Lachimon. Judging by the bow and arrow on the man's back, this middle-aged man must be him.

A few thoughts flashed through Tang Zheng's mind. His tone shifted as he asked the Village Chief with some curiosity, “Have any other people visited the village recently?”

The Village Chief obviously couldn't have known he would return to Carne Village. Since he didn't know, yet the room had been cleaned, it meant someone else had visited the village.

“Yes.”

The Village Chief nodded. “Several adventurer parties have come by recently. They all stayed in the village for a night and then left in a hurry.”

“Do you know what they came here for?”

A glint appeared in Tang Zheng's eyes; he already had some guesses.

“Adventurers are important people; it's not our place to question them. Besides, we don't know anything.” The wrinkles on the Village Chief's face creased as he gave a hearty laugh and waved his hand.

Hearing this, Tang Zheng gave the Village Chief a surprised look.

A very clever answer.

Perhaps this was the way of survival for commoners.

Although there was no useful information, it wasn't hard to deduce.

For a border village like Carne Village, which rarely saw outsiders, the sudden appearance of several adventurer parties was most likely related to his own activities in the forest recently.

It was the same room as last time.

Tang Zheng entered the room and saw that the entire place had been cleaned spotless. Even the spiderwebs on the beams overhead were gone.

“Awooo.”

The Lesser Soulhound was quite lively, observing its surroundings.

“When there are outsiders around, don't bark for no reason in the future.” Tang Zheng said coolly, looking at the Lesser Soulhound.

“Whimper.”

The Lesser Soulhound's lively movements ceased. It shrank its neck, and its ears drooped.

Most Monsters possessed a fair degree of Wisdom, and after spending this time with it, this Lesser Soulhound proved to be even smarter than Tang Zheng had expected.

As long as the commands weren't too complex, this Evil Spirit Hound could understand them perfectly.

Tang Zheng reached out and grabbed the air, pulling out a goblin corpse and tossing it to the Lesser Soulhound.

“Tonight's dinner.”

Meanwhile.

After leading Tang Zheng to the house, the Village Chief and Lachimon made their way back along the village's uneven dirt road.

“Has something been happening in the forest lately?” The hearty smile had vanished from the Village Chief's face, replaced by a look of worry.

After a moment, he realized there was no response.

“What's wrong with you today? You're so quiet.” The Village Chief looked at Lachimon beside him in confusion.

“It's an Evil Spirit Hound!”

Lachimon's voice was trembling.

“What?” The Village Chief looked lost, not understanding what Lachimon was talking about.

“That Monster following him is an Evil Spirit Hound.” Lachimon raised his head to look at the Village Chief, his face pale.

“It's a Monster more terrifying than an Ogre! In the Adventurer Difficulty rating, it's a fearsome existence with a rating of 45.”

“That one is clearly a pup, and a cunning Monster like the Evil Spirit Hound is certain to stay near its young.”

Lachimon took a deep breath and spoke seriously.

“Difficulty?” The Village Chief was still confused.

The so-called “Difficulty” is a rating used by the Adventurer's Guild to rate a monster's strength. For example, an adult male has a Difficulty rating of three.

As the village hunter, Lachimon usually spent his time picking herbs and hunting ordinary wild beasts on the outskirts of the Touv Great Forest.

He also had to take the village's surplus crops, like wheat, to E-Rantel to sell them in exchange for purchasing basic supplies.

Therefore, he had more knowledge about adventurers than the other villagers.

“Village Chief, he's not an adventurer either.”

Lachimon lowered his voice, casting a furtive glance in the direction of the house where Tang Zheng was staying.

“No matter their Level, all adventurers carry a metal plate made according to their rank in a conspicuous place on their person.”

His pure black hair, an obvious sign of an outsider, and the Evil Spirit Hound pup following beside him, made Lachimon extremely nervous.

No matter how you looked at it, he seemed like a dangerous person.

Tap, tap…

Light footsteps sounded.

Just as he was about to speak again, Lachimon closed his mouth and looked up. He and the Village Chief both turned to look in the direction of the sound.

There,

Enri was walking toward them, carrying a wooden tray.

Seeing this, the Village Chief's face broke into a kind smile. “Where are you off to, little Enri?”

“Village Chief, Uncle Lachimon.”

Enri saw the two men ahead and quickly spoke, a shy blush on her cheeks:

“My mother asked me to bring some food to that esteemed adventurer, as thanks for helping with the weeds.”

Lachimon glanced at the tray in Enri's hands. There was a steaming bowl of bean soup with visible bits of meat in it, and a plate of washed nuts.

“Since when was that Emmott fellow so generous?” Lachimon said half-jokingly, letting out a whistle.

“Alright, Enri. You can go on ahead.”

The Village Chief waved his hand gently.

Enri nodded respectfully to the two of them and hurried away.

“Village Chief…” Lachimon started to speak again once Enri had left.

This time, however, the Village Chief waved his hand, cutting Lachimon off. He said softly, “Relax, Lachimon. This is the second time he has come to our village.”

Lachimon fell silent, pondering for a moment. “Should we make a trip to E-Rantel? I have a feeling something is happening in the forest that we don't know about.”

This time, the Village Chief didn't speak. He turned to look in the direction Enri had disappeared, then continued walking forward in silence.
