Chapter 60: Evil Spirit Hound Pup, Truly Ugly

“Wauwooh…”
A low growl came from a nearby thicket of grass.
“My lord, my lord, there's something there.”
Big Goblin Muguo's drooping ears twitched, and he said, his voice laced with panic.
Tang Zheng looked up toward the thicket, stood, and walked over.
He parted the grass with his iron sword.
A small, black-furred Evil Spirit Hound lay on the ground, its body trembling. Its beastly eyes were filled with fear. Sensing Tang Zheng's gaze, it began to tremble uncontrollably.
The small Evil Spirit Hound was only about fifty centimeters long. While not tiny for a human, compared to a normal, three-meter-long Evil Spirit Hound, it was clearly just a pup.
“My lord, so it's an Evil Spirit Hound pup.”
“No wonder the cunning adult Evil Spirit Hounds didn't flee after seeing your great strength, my lord.”
Big Goblin Muguo's panic vanished, and he spoke in a fawning tone.
Tang Zheng glanced at the small Evil Spirit Hound.
Its entire body was covered in black fur. Aside from the bone chain wrapped around it, it resembled a black puppy from his past life.
It just looked too ferocious, and with the small horn protruding from its forehead, it looked a bit like a sheep from the front.
“Truly ugly.”
Tang Zheng glanced at it once more before looking away. He spoke indifferently and turned to leave.
Rustle!
He had only taken a few steps when he heard a sound from the thicket behind him; the Evil Spirit Hound pup had actually crawled out.
Tang Zheng hadn't planned on paying it any mind. A harmless Evil Spirit Hound pup that offered little experience wasn't worth killing.
But unexpectedly, it had followed him.
Tang Zheng paused and turned his head, looking expressionlessly at the small Evil Spirit Hound that cautiously followed, trembling all the while.
“What, do you want to avenge your parents?”
“Awoo…”
The small Evil Spirit Hound immediately prostrated itself on the ground, then rolled over to expose its belly, its limbs spread wide in the air.
Seeing the pup's action, Tang Zheng looked surprised. “What does this mean?”
“It means submission.”
“This Evil Spirit Hound pup wishes to follow you, my lord!”
Muguo quickly explained, a flicker of surprise in his eyes as he glanced at the pup.
He wasn't surprised by the pup's behavior, but by its intelligence.
*Hmph, what a discerning fellow.*
*The Lord is a true Strong One!*
Hearing Big Goblin Muguo's explanation, Tang Zheng was slightly surprised. “Didn't I just kill its parents?”
As soon as he said this.
Big Goblin Muguo, however, looked puzzled. He asked in a bewildered tone, “Is that strange? Isn't it only natural to serve the strong?”
Tang Zheng stared silently at Big Goblin Muguo for a moment.
He suddenly felt he had overestimated the moral standards of the hobgoblin species.
No wonder.
Big Goblin Muguo was looking more and more like a sycophant.
With time, the bloody scent from the two Evil Spirit Hound corpses spread, attracting numerous wild beasts.
However!
A month ago, it wouldn't have been long before many wild beasts were drawn to the smell, devouring the corpses completely.
But now, the wild beasts that caught the bloody scent showed no intention of approaching. Instead, they all cautiously moved further away.
For some time, the faint yet cloying scent of blood had never dissipated from the jungle. All the wild beasts knew that any who rushed in would only end up as another corpse.
However!
Rustle, rustle—
The sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs echoed.
Three figures cautiously peeked out from behind the bushes. Only after confirming there were just two Evil Spirit Hound corpses and no one else did they emerge from the thicket.
Of these three figures, one was short, while the other two were much sturdier and taller. Both of the taller ones carried large wicker baskets on their backs.
They were the three hobgoblins from the Jick Tribe.
The bloody scent in the air hadn't attracted the forest's wild beasts, but it had drawn these three over.
Once Agu confirmed there was no danger, he leaped out from the grass. He looked at the two Evil Spirit Hound corpses with a shocked expression, then seemed to recall something.
He quickly ran forward to examine the two corpses.
Seeing this, the two hobgoblins behind him rushed forward, clearly worried for his safety.
“W-what is it, Agu? D-did you find something?” the stammering hobgoblin asked cautiously, scanning their surroundings.
“In this area, only ogres should be able to threaten Evil Spirit Hounds.”
“But the injuries on these two Evil Spirit Hounds weren't caused by ogres, and their long chains are also missing. That's not something the wild beasts and monsters of the forest like to eat.”
As Agu spoke, his voice filled with delight. “It’s that human. We’ve finally found him.”
The other hobgoblin looked at the Evil Spirit Hound corpse, his eyes filled with fear and dread.
“Agu, do we really have to find that human?”
“He killed a magical beast as powerful as an Evil Spirit Hound. We're no match for him.”
Agu stood up. Though much younger, he was far more composed than the other two hobgoblins.
“We have to find Big Brother, even if it’s just his corpse.”
“Big Brother was carrying the tribe's treasure.”
Agu spoke with a serious expression.
Hearing the words “tribe's treasure,” the other two hobgoblins, who had been terrified, finally calmed down.
“That human must have just left.” Agu reached down, touched a patch of darkened blood on the ground, and licked it. His eyes lit up as he spoke.
Gurgle~
Grumble~
Suddenly, their stomachs rumbled. Agu paused, turning to see his two tribesmen staring at the Evil Spirit Hound corpses, swallowing their saliva.
“Don’t waste such precious food,” Agu said after a moment of hesitation.
As soon as he spoke, the two hobgoblins howled with excitement and began to tear at the flesh of the Evil Spirit Hounds.
Agu naturally joined in as well.
As he’d said, monsters like Evil Spirit Hounds were not something they could normally handle, let alone feast on.
Even on the rare occasion they saw the remains of an Evil Spirit Hound, it would be in the caves of the Oni lords.
The sounds of them tearing into raw flesh and blood echoed through the forest.

Evening.
The visibility in the jungle was decreasing at a rate visible to the naked eye.
Tang Zheng stopped hunting for prey, found a relatively tall tree, and stopped.
[Experience Bar: 9382/9500]
He glanced at his status panel. An afternoon's effort had raised his experience by another small chunk.
“Only 118 experience points to go.”
“Barring any surprises, I should be able to level up tomorrow.”
Tang Zheng inhaled the cool, earthy scent in the air, and his mood brightened considerably.
