Chapter 109

Chapter 109: The Dangerous Swamp, the Swamp Giant Jaw

2024-11-18 Author: Amnesty L

Above the weed-choked, pale-purple swamp.

Leinas clung tightly to a groove in the Flame Archangel's armor with her left hand, a black spear slung across her back. Her expression was tense as she surveyed their surroundings.

Leinas knew better than anyone in the entire Lockburs Territory just how dangerous this swamp was, especially its depths.

*This madman!*

Leinas glanced over at Tang Zheng. He sat calmly on the Flame Archangel's arm, his white priest robe rustling loudly in the wind. She couldn't help but curse inwardly.

If he hadn't come here to treat the curse on her face, Leinas was certain she would never have taken such a risk.

"Caw, caw, caw!"

"Caw, caw! Caw!"

Shrill, frog-like cries came from the gray-feathered Carrion Birds circling around Tang Zheng and Leinas.

They looked as if they intended to dive down at any moment, yet they were wary of the terrifying, flaming sword in the Flame Archangel's hand. Not a single one dared to approach.

"Damn these bald things."

Leinas lightly bit her snow-white teeth, a grim expression on her face as she scanned the surrounding Carrion Birds.

These screeching birds weren't much of a threat on their own, but their collective cries could easily attract the monsters from the swamp's depths.

Due to the distance, she was completely unable to attack these disgusting, bald birds.

*Click!*

Tang Zheng opened the pocket watch hanging from his chest, checked the time, and snapped it shut. "Get ready to land in that area."

Leinas looked down at an earthy-brown patch of ground. She also realized that the time limit on the Flame Archangel Tang Zheng had summoned must be running out.

*Swoosh! Swoosh!*

With a beat of their wings, the two Flame Archangels glided swiftly down from the sky. Just before reaching the ground, they flapped their wings rapidly to decelerate, descending slowly.

Leinas was the first to vault off the Flame Archangel's back, landing on the solid ground with a sense of relief.

*Thud—*

Tang Zheng also landed on both feet, his gaze cautiously scanning the surroundings.

The scrolls he created allowed an angel to exist for about fifty minutes. The time wasn't up, but there was no need to wait until the last second.

Withholding some information was one thing.

More importantly, he had over thirty Flame Archangel scrolls on hand. He hadn't been idle this past month; besides reserving some of his magic power, he had been creating one scroll per day on average.

The swamp environment was somewhat monotonous. A single glance revealed numerous puddles of varying sizes, along with some dead trees and bushes.

With a wave of his sleeve, the two Flame Archangels dissolved into motes of light.

The next moment, as two beams of light reconverged, two new Flame Archangels appeared in their place.

"Are we continuing deeper?" Leinas asked, vigilantly observing their surroundings.

"Are you sure the monster you encountered before isn't in this swamp?" Tang Zheng asked curiously.

"I'm very sure!" Leinas nodded. "While I may not recognize every monster in the swamp, the appearance of that monster is definitely not something that could be born in this kind of swamp area."

Hearing this, Tang Zheng only grew more curious.

A monster imbued with curse power shouldn't be too weak, logically speaking. But given that Leinas was only at the Orichalcum-rank, it was impossible for her past self to have defeated a monster above level 20.

"Something's coming!" Leinas's voice grew stern as she gave a sudden warning, raising her black spear horizontally before her chest.

Just then, shallow mounds began to appear one after another on the soft ground, rapidly approaching their position.

Seeing Leinas prepare to act, a thought flashed through Tang Zheng's mind, and he immediately commanded the two Flame Archangels to charge.

"Let the summons handle this," Tang Zheng advised. "It's best to conserve your stamina until we know what other troubles await."

Leinas paused her attack and moved to his side. She clearly agreed with him.

"Hiss!!"

As one Flame Archangel plunged its flaming sword into a nearby mound, a piercing hiss erupted from underground.

The next moment, a greenish-brown, centipede-like worm with eight legs and tough skin was pulled out, writhing on the blade.

Green liquid spurted from the wound, emitting a nauseating stench.

After struggling for just a few moments, the worm-like monster was burned to death by the sword's flames.

"It's a Carrion Worm." Seeing the arm-length creature, Leinas warned Tang Zheng, "Be careful. There should be a Purple Long Worm nearby."

『Experience Gained: 13』

The two Flame Archangels attacked relentlessly, slaying a large number of the worms.

Tang Zheng watched the constantly refreshing experience values, a hint of a smile in his eyes. This swamp seemed quite promising.

Through his research during this period, he had discovered that the experience gained when his summoned Flame Archangels killed a monster was indeed slightly less than when he killed one himself.

But compared to the time he would waste clearing low-tier monsters alone, this reduction was nothing.

*Boom!*

The ground beneath Tang Zheng and Leinas's feet exploded, and a Purple Long Worm—over two meters long with a barrel-shaped body and rough, dark-purple skin—burst out from below.

It opened a mouth as wide as its body, intending to swallow its nearest target, Tang Zheng, in one gulp.

Leinas had already reacted, immediately thrusting her spear against the Purple Long Worm's lower jaw. With a powerful upward push, she pierced its mouth and forced the gaping maw shut.

*Bang!*

"Get lost!" Leinas shouted, swinging her spear and violently slamming the impaled Purple Long Worm onto the ground.

A Flame Archangel flew over, and its flaming sword descended, chopping off the Purple Long Worm's head on the spot.

However, perhaps it was because the two Flame Archangels were too conspicuous in this environment.

Or perhaps the commotion from the battle and the ceaselessly screeching Carrion Birds above had attracted the attention of a powerful monster within the swamp.

*SWOOSH!!*

The heavy sound of something tearing through the air suddenly exploded behind one of the Flame Archangels.

A massive, thick tail whipped out from a mud pit, striking the Flame Archangel squarely in the back with a tremendous bang.

*CRACK—*

A large area of the armor on the Flame Archangel caved in, and the immense force sent it flying dozens of meters away.

The thick, long tail retracted back into the mud pit.

Immediately after, the mud pit in that area began to churn, sending up bubbles.

*Thump! Thump!*

Two massive, heavy feet stepped out of the mud pit first.

A monster resembling a crocodile—possessing a huge lower jaw and sharp teeth, with a vertical row of sharp spikes protruding from its back, and its entire body caked in thick mud and moss—crawled out of the mire.

The moment its entire form was revealed, the air fell deathly still.

This was a colossal monster, a full six meters in length and about one meter high.

"A Swamp Giant Jaw!" Leinas's face became utterly grim. "A terrifying monster rated by the Adventurer's Guild as having a difficulty of 60."

She quickly retreated to Tang Zheng's side and spoke rapidly.
