Chapter 299: Gaia the Dragon Champion
"Gravekeeper's Spiritualist? You're not planning to Fusion Summon a second Gravekeeper's Visionary, are you?"
Hearing Hayato's words, Ishizu showed a helpless expression. "Using Gravekeeper's Spiritualist's Effect to Fusion Summon a second Gravekeeper's Visionary? I actually really wanted to do that, but unfortunately, I only have one Gravekeeper's Visionary."
"Facing Gaia the Dragon Champion, I don't have any good way to counter it for the time being. I can only try my best to ensure I won't be One-Turn Killed by your Attack, Hayato-kun."
"Don't lie to me, I don't think you, Ishizu, would just sit back and wait," Hayato said, watching Ishizu Set the last Card in her Hand. "Is that card what you're relying on? Is it an Attack Declaration Trap, a Summon Trap? Or a Fake Trap to bait me into destroying it?"
"So, will you try attacking, Hayato-kun?" Ishizu smiled calmly.
Hayato thought for a moment, then spoke. "Just in case, before the End Phase of your Turn, I will use Gaia the Dragon Champion's Effect. Once per Turn during either player's Main Phase, I can target one Card on the Field other than Gaia the Dragon Champion. I choose the Card you just Set in your Backrow."
"Decrease Gaia the Dragon Champion's Attack Points by 2600, and Destroy the targeted Card!"
Gaia the Dragon Champion raised the Lance in its hand above its head, then threw it towards the Card Ishizu had just Set. The sharp Lance Destroyed that Card, revealing a Trap Card depicting a luxurious temple.

"The Card Destroyed by Gaia the Dragon Champion's Effect is Temple of the Kings," Ishizu said with a cunning smile. "Although it's a Continuous Trap Card, when it is Destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, it also has an Effect that can Activate."
"Temple of the Kings' Effect can only Activate when it is Destroyed by an opponent's Effect and sent to the Graveyard. I can select 1 Necrovalley Spell/Trap Card from my Deck, other than Temple of the Kings, and Set it on my Field."
At the cost of halving Gaia the Dragon Champion's Attack Points, Hayato Destroyed Ishizu's Set Card, but unfortunately, the Card Ishizu Set was a Trap that also Activated an Effect when Destroyed. However, Hayato felt somewhat relieved.
What Hayato was most worried about was Ishizu setting a Quick-Play Spell Card in her Backrow, a Card that could be Activated during her own Turn, like Cards such as Rush Recklessly. Although he wasn't very familiar with the Gravekeepers Deck, the Necrovalley series Set Cards seemingly didn't include Quick-Play Spell Cards.
Traps, on the other hand, were what Hayato was least worried about, because among the three Set Cards in his Backrow, that Red Reboot had been Set for a while now.
"I'll Set one card from my hand, then end my turn." After searching her Deck for a card and setting it, Ishizu ended her turn.

[Set Card]
"My Turn, Draw!" Hayato drew a Card from his Deck and Set it. "I Set the Card I just drew on the Field, then Activate the Effect of Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight in my Hand."
"When he is the only Card in my Hand, I can Normal Summon him without Tribute!"
"Come forth, my most trusted Ace Monster, my Tamashii, Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight!"
The pitch-black Knight appeared on the Field holding a Lance. Subconsciously, he looked up at the other Gaia the Dragon Champion on Hayato's Field. Awkwardly turning his head, the Knight muttered, "No matter how many times, seeing another version of myself is always strange..."

"Yosh! Hayato now has two Monsters on his Field, and their Attack Points are both higher than the Defense Points of Ms. Ishizu's Monsters on the Field," Joey Wheeler said, looking a bit excited seeing Hayato Summon a second Gaia. "I bet next, Hayato will Attack with both Monsters together, right?"
But contrary to Joey Wheeler's thoughts, Hayato on the Duel Field did not Activate an Attack immediately. Instead, he ordered Gaia the Dragon Champion again: "During my Main Phase, use Gaia the Dragon Champion's Effect again. Decrease its Attack Points by 2600, and Destroy the Set Card in your Backrow, Ishizu!"
[Gaia the Dragon Champion ATK 2600 → 0]
"He actually decreased Gaia the Dragon Champion's Attack Points to 0?"
Joey Wheeler was a bit surprised, because if its Attack Points were decreased to 0, it meant Gaia the Dragon Champion would no longer be able to Destroy Monsters through Battle to use its Effect to increase its Attack Points.
Yugi Mutou, however, seemed to understand. "Although the Attack Points of both Gaia the Dragon Champion and Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight exceed the Defense Points of Ms. Ishizu's Monsters on the Field, no one knows what the next Card revealed on the Field will be. Being cautious is not a bad thing."
"Hmph, in the end, this guy is just a coward," Marik heard Yugi Mutou's evaluation of Hayato and said, clearly annoyed. Anyway, whether Hayato was cautious or reckless, he could always find something to criticize. Everything done by someone you dislike is annoying.
Kaiba, meanwhile, just listened silently to the discussion among the people around him, his gaze fixed on Gaia the Dragon Champion on the Field, who had just thrown its Lance. 'Willing to decrease Gaia's Attack Points again just to clear the opponent's Set Card... He really is a cautious fellow, Kobayashi Hayato.'
He glanced at Yugi Mutou again. 'However, if it's you who frequently Duels with Yugi Mutou, who is skilled at using Trap Cards, it's understandable.'
The Lance flew towards Ishizu's Set Card just like in the previous Turn. The only difference from before was that the Card Ishizu Set this Turn had been prepared for a sufficient amount of time. It wasn't Destroyed without resistance like in the previous Turn.
"Then, Chain to Gaia the Dragon Champion's Effect, I Activate the Set Card that was targeted!" Ishizu revealed the true identity of the Set Card. "Royal Tribute!"
"Can be Activated when there is a Gravekeepers Monster and Necrovalley on the Field! Negate the Activation of Effect Monster Effects, Spell Cards, and Trap Cards, and Destroy them!"
"Gravekeeper's Spiritualist? You're not planning to Fusion Summon a second Gravekeeper's Visionary, are you?"
