Chapter 85
Chapter 85: Saffron City
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)
Saffron City.
This was the largest city in the Kanto Region. Unlike other places that, at most, had seven-story buildings, the skyscrapers here started at thirty floors.
The kind that could pierce the heavens.
Even the exterior glass was a brilliant gold, a truly dazzling sight.
"So this is a big city!"
Ash and Pikachu gazed up at the surrounding skyscrapers in utter shock. Then, he took a deep breath, trying to compose himself and act as if he'd seen it all.
"Pikachu, this would be considered below average back in our Pallet Town, right?"
"Pika (That's right)."
Pikachu nodded repeatedly.
Although the other two were also city dwellers, Cerulean City and Pewter City were like ordinary towns compared to Saffron City. They couldn't help but click their tongues in amazement.
However, the city gave the three of them a distinctly unsettling feeling. They either felt a chill run down their backs or had the creepy sensation of being watched.
The pressure was a bit much.
But when they looked around, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
The three exchanged a glance and quickened their pace toward the Saffron City Pokémon Center.
Saffron City, Pokémon Center.
Ash handed all his Pokémon to Nurse Joy to have their stamina restored.
Seeing Brock suddenly standing there like a wooden statue behind him, his gaze locked on the counter, Ash waved a hand in front of his face.
"Teacher Brock? Teacher Brock?"
A faint blush crept across Brock’s dark face. His half-closed eyelids drooped a few more millimeters, narrowing into slits. His expression was a little flustered. He then took a sharp, deep breath, as if he had just broken free from a sea of suffering.
He quickly turned his head away, no longer looking toward the Pokémon Center's counter. Pressing his palms together, he began to chant in a low voice:
"Form is emptiness, emptiness is form..."
The lustful Inner Demon was tormenting him again!
The adorable Nurse Joy standing nearby: "?"
The other two had no idea what was going on but found it impressive nonetheless. They decided to ignore Brock. This city was too strange, so they quickly took the opportunity to ask Nurse Joy for information about Saffron City.
"Are you all from out of town?"
Ash and Misty nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes, we're just passing through."
Upon hearing this, Nurse Joy's expression grew much more profound. She explained in a gentle voice:
"Saffron City isn't very peaceful right now. You outsiders must be extremely careful."
She took out a map of Saffron City and drew a small circle in the northeast region and a large circle in the southwest region, the two circles tangent to each other.
"The center of this small circle at the top is the location of the Saffron Gym. It used to be a normal Gym, but in the last two years, something seems to have gone wrong with the Gym Leader, Miss Sabrina's, mentality. Her personality has become somewhat extreme, so you must be careful when entering this small circle, especially when you get near the Gym..."
Ash waved his hand dismissively. "Hmph, what's there to be afraid of!"
From her name, she sounded like an ordinary woman. Surely she couldn't pin him down, could she?
"Miss Sabrina is not to be trifled with. She is the most powerful user of Psychic Powers in our Kanto Region. You can look up her record and nickname online..." Nurse Joy swallowed and added:
"Humanoid Weapon!"
About five or six years ago, Saffron City had two Gyms. The other was the Fighting Dojo, whose strength was barely middle-rank in the Kanto Region.
In the end, simply because it was next door and in the way, Sabrina crumpled it up, along with the entire Gym building, into a ball and threw it out of Saffron City.
There's still an empty plot of land next to the Saffron Gym even now.
Hearing this, the two of them also swallowed hard, and Ash's expression turned a little ugly.
In truth, Nurse Joy herself was very puzzled. She had worked in Saffron City for several years and had met Sabrina many times in the past. Although Sabrina had always been as cold as a snowy mountain, she could tell that Sabrina didn't have a violent personality.
But now, she would unleash her Psychic Powers at the slightest disagreement. Barely anyone dared to cross her.
Because of this, even that major power in the large circle didn't dare take any extra measures against this madwoman.
Nurse Joy then shook her head and pointed her finger at the large circle below.
"This large area in the southwest is the sphere of influence of the Rainbow Group. The center is the Silph Co. Building, though it will probably be renamed the Rainbow Building soon. You must be careful when entering this area."
The two nodded. To put it bluntly, the Rainbow Group was Team Rocket. It certainly didn't seem very safe.
"And the place where the two circles touch is our current location."
The two nodded again, marveling to themselves that this was indeed a big city. Even the location of the Pokémon Center was subtly based on the philosophy of the Five Elements and Eight Trigrams, of Taiji and Yin-Yang.
The architect must have been an old-school geometrician.
"By the way, Nurse Joy, what about the remaining two areas?" Misty asked curiously, pointing to the upper-left and lower-right corners of the map.
"The upper-left is the High-Speed Rail Station, which goes directly to Goldenrod City in the Johto Region. The Pokémon League is backing it, so neither of these two powers dares to touch it."
"The lower-right is a new power that moved in just a few years ago, the Devon Corporation from the Hoenn Region. In the Hoenn Region, they're a massive enterprise that can blot out the sky with one hand, but they don't dare do much after coming to our Kanto Region, so they can only huddle in their corner."
This Nurse Joy was surprisingly knowledgeable, knowing a little bit about everything.
Hearing this, Ash's body trembled. He had heard that keyword again: Hoenn Region.
Was this the Hoenn Region where Rayquaza roamed everywhere, where you could knock one out by casually tossing a rock?
It seemed the world outside the Kanto Region was also very exciting...
His eyes lit up, but his primary objective right now was still to defeat this woman named Sabrina!
"Nurse Joy, may I ask what type the Saffron Gym specializes in?"
For a single Trainer to throw nearly half the city into a panic meant she was truly no simple matter. This time, Ash planned to fight a proper battle using Type Advantage Tactics.
"Sabrina? She's a psychic, so naturally, she specializes in the Psychic Type," Nurse Joy replied.
Actually, she hadn't told them the full story. If she were to be completely honest, one could even say Sabrina was the strongest Psychic-type Trainer in the Kanto Region.
Ash scratched his head and fell into thought.
"Psychic Type, huh? I remember the Psychic Type is weak to... the Grass-type, right?"
It looked like this battle would depend on his Bulbasaur to turn the tables!
Misty blurted out a retort:
"Idiot, since when is the Grass-type super effective against the Psychic Type! Your Gengar, or those two mutated Pokémon of yours, would have a much better type advantage."
And he had the nerve to say he had memorized the type-effectiveness chart?
That was hilarious.
However, the Psychic Type was not easy to deal with.
If one were to classify the 18 types, the Fire Type and Dragon Type possessed the most domineering and tyrannical power, while the Ghost Type and Psychic Type were the most bizarre and unpredictable.
In some respects, they could be said to be the most difficult of all types to handle.
But whether it was Ash's Gengar or the mutated Cubone's Ghost Type, or even Butterfree's Bug Type, they could all effectively counter the Psychic Type.
Thinking about it that way, the problem shouldn't be too big.
Ash scratched his head and asked in confusion:
"Huh? Isn't my only mutated Pokémon Butterfree? When did I get a second one?"
Misty: "..."
