Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Why is the Boss Laughing?
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander
Archer's expression changed drastically.
Is it a machine that automatically identifies people?!
Damn it, what level of machine is this? My identity is so top secret, yet it was exposed in a single sentence?
As expected… This kid is already a menace!
What should I do? Do I have to make a move by force right now?! My current strength is only enough to barely contend with an ordinary Elite Four member. Can I really take on a powerhouse like this...?
Archer's expression flickered through at least a hundred changes in an instant before he finally steeled himself, forcing his composure to return.
Archer squeezed out another smile.
However, his composure was already in complete disarray.
"Heh heh, was someone just talking to me? I don't seem to understand what was said," he asked, feigning ignorance.
Ash, however, just waved his greasy hand—oily from grabbing a chicken leg—and explained,
"It's nothing, Mr. Archer. My Pokédex likes to spout nonsense. Don't take it seriously."
"!!!"
Archer's expression became shocked once again, and there was even a faint hint of fear.
Ash's words might have been simple, but that wave of his hand... was he implying that I'm no match for him, and that starting a conflict would only result in my own crushing defeat?!
To subdue the enemy without fighting—what a brilliant tactic!
So, what should I do about this Team Rocket team-building event...? Should I report this to Giovanni in advance...?
Archer shook his head, his face turning cold.
No. Only by completing this mission can I silence all the voices of doubt within the organization and become the true successor to Team Rocket!
After a bout of brainstorming, Archer could only give Ash a very cautious look before slowly departing from the room.
In any case, he was Team Rocket's Number One Strategist. He would eventually think of a way... Hmph.
Ash: "?"
He, of course, had no idea about the storm raging in the other's mind. He was just silently puzzled.
Boros or Archer, whatever. It's just a name.
But he thought he'd just heard the words "Team Rocket."
Could he be a colleague of Jessie and James?
Speaking of which, it's been so long since I've seen those three. Why do I kind of miss them?
Ash shuddered violently, then grabbed another large chicken leg and started gnawing on it.
"Pikachu, keep eating. Don't think about dieting."
After all, you need a full stomach to have the energy to lose weight!
Unexpectedly, Pikachu hadn't lifted its head at all. While the two were talking, it had already devoured several more chicken legs.
When it came to eating, it didn't need anyone's reminder.
Ash: "..."
Soon, Archer retreated behind the curtain, still secretly observing the gluttonous Ash.
"The great path is simple, experiencing the mortal world?"
I've heard that many powerful Trainers, upon reaching the peak of their strength and finding themselves unable to advance further, will relax their minds and take on the role of a novice to temper themselves.
To think this youth named Ash has already reached such a Realm at such a young age.
"Boss, what's our next move...?" the subordinate in the tailcoat asked uncertainly.
He had never seen Archer with such an expression.
He was thinking on too many levels for him to possibly understand.
"We'll hold our position for now and proceed according to the original plan," Archer said slowly after a long pause.
Their original plan was to take action on the last day of the voyage, so there was no rush.
But this youth before them had to be dealt with...
However, this could all just be based on his own wild speculation. Maybe he's just an ordinary Trainer, and I'm overthinking it?
But that possibility was minuscule, almost to the point of being impossible.
Yet, cautious as he was, he still needed to confirm it!
Archer turned his back, pondered for a long time, and finally said:
"Go. Bring me the Pokémon Combat Power Detector secretly developed by Team Rocket."
Hearing this, the subordinate in the tailcoat's gaze turned solemn. He gave a formal salute.
Then he ran off in a certain direction.
That was a piece of super black technology that Team Rocket's research team had spent a fortune to create. It was said that one glance was enough to see through a Pokémon's combat power.
It could even detect it through a Poké Ball!
Will I finally have the honor of witnessing the radiance of this divine artifact today!?
At the banquet, Gary was still on stage, grandly talking about his ambitious plans for the future.
Ash was still stuffing his face. The more a Trainer in the Body Refining Stage ate, the greater the increase to their strength.
Boom!
Just then, the banquet hall doors were suddenly smashed open. The loud noise drew everyone's attention.
Archer: "?"
Don't tell me we've run into rivals trying to hijack our operation?!
The doors opened to reveal a brown-haired girl wearing a white sun hat slowly walking in. A faint, deathly aura emanated from her body, making everyone's hearts skip a beat.
The dense, deathly aura was almost tangible, rushing entirely towards the stage, at the Spiky-Haired Youth who was still laughing with his head thrown back.
On her shoulder, she carried a thick stone slab that was nearly a meter tall.
The heavy stone slab made every step Blue took on the red carpet feel like the beat of a giant drum, shaking people to their core.
A line of large characters was carved on the stone slab.
Grave of the Flea from my Hometown!
As Blue carried the gravestone, the high-society people around her consciously made way, clearing a path to the stage.
Even Ash's eyes lit up. He disregarded his greasy hands and pulled out his Pokédex, switching to the camera function.
He had to record this scene!
"Gary, you've gone too far this time, haven't you?"
In his mind, Green's brow was deeply furrowed. He still couldn't understand Gary's twisted sense of humor.
"It's just a small scene, big brother Green. Just a small scene. Next time, I'll take you to dance on a grave."
Gary, however, just chuckled lightly.
If on Ash's side, it was Red secretly guiding Ash forward...
...then Gary's side was completely different. It was the other way around; he was the one leading Green.
Green: "..."
Gary's arrogant expression instantly transformed into one of joy, as if he had just seen a long-lost compatriot.
Gary shouted into the microphone,
"Let me introduce everyone. The girl walking towards us is my old compatriot of many years, Blue from Pallet Town! Let's have a round of applause!"
Applause immediately erupted.
However, Blue's eyes were vacant. She remained unmoved, pressing forward step by step.
No matter what, she was going to put this flea in its grave today...!
"Perhaps some of you friends don't know, but this girl has another huge identity!"
A sly grin appeared on Gary's lips as he roared:
"She is also Vermilion City's newest hero!! The Tree-Chopping King!!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the scene descended into chaos.
"My Farfetch'd, she's actually that Tree-Chopping King?!"
"She does look a bit like her..."
"I remember seeing her snap a tree as thick as several people in half with her bare hands."
"I was there. I felt a chill run down my spine."
The most talked-about thing in Vermilion City recently wasn't some other fancy affair, but this tree-chopping maniac who had appeared out of nowhere and, in just a few days, had cut down all the weeds and trees in the entire city.
Coupled with the Vermilion City media's frenzied hype to build up her persona...
...Blue's fame was skyrocketing, making her the hottest new internet celebrity of her generation.
The reverse kind, that is.
In an instant, numerous reporters carrying cameras and high-society individuals swarmed forward, surrounding Blue.
"Can we get an exclusive interview, Miss Tree-Chopping King?"
"Can I get an autograph? I want to chop trees too!"
"Can you livestream your tree-chopping in the future? I also want to know how to 'chop' my boyfriend..."
"I have some pork floss cakes here, can you promote them?"
Vermilion City didn't have much of anything else, except for idle people with too much time on their hands.
Faced with several flashing cameras and the dense crowd...
...seeing their fanatical expressions, Blue couldn't help but blush.
Finally, her aura instantly dissipated, and she suddenly became shy.
Blue reverted to that innocent, energetic girl full of vitality, and even the gravestone on her shoulder fell to the red carpet with a "Clang!"
"Ahaha, hello everyone, I'm the Tree-Chopping King, Blue..."
She scratched her head, the countless cameras and people making her eyes gradually glaze over.
On the High Platform, Gary watched the flustered and helpless Blue in the crowd and finally couldn't resist snickering:
"Haha, that's really hilarious."
Blue losing her combat effectiveness in front of a camera was a weakness he had known about for a long time.
Meanwhile, at the dining table, Ash, seeing that there was no more drama to watch, could only glare at Gary in annoyance, thinking it was a pity.
He knew this weakness too.
Behind the curtain, Archer paid no mind to the chaotic scene, his gaze shifting between the three individuals.
Finally, his eyes locked onto Ash once more.
"Hiss... I still can't see through him."
"Boss, I've brought the Combat Power Detector!"
Soon, the subordinate in the tailcoat handed over a delicate, single-lensed eyepiece.
The lens was made of high-tech material, translucent green. When it locked onto a target, the target's combat power would be displayed on the lens.
"Hmph."
Archer carefully placed the Combat Power Detector over his right eye, pressed the switch, and first scanned Blue, who was surrounded by the crowd.
He already knew this girl was the third Trainer from Pallet Town.
Soon, the detector automatically locked onto the Poké Balls on Blue's waist.
"Beep... 500, 700, 600..."
Looking at the fluctuating numbers on the lens, Archer sneered, even letting out a laugh.
Generally, a newborn baby Pokémon has a combat power of 10, while a typical Novice Trainer's Pokémon has a combat power somewhere between 100 and 1000.
More elite Trainers would be between one thousand and ten thousand.
And a combat power above ten thousand signified a true powerhouse.
For example, his own ace, Houndoom, possessed a mighty combat power of thirteen thousand!
"Why are you laughing, Boss?" the subordinate in the tailcoat asked, puzzled, seeing Archer chuckling.
"Hmph, I'm laughing at that country girl. Just a mere Rookie Trainer. I thought she was some big shot. How ridiculous..."
However, just as he was laughing and preparing to switch targets...
Beep! Beep! Beep!!
The value on the detector suddenly skyrocketed without reason, shooting up from the unremarkable three-digit numbers to a five-digit figure!
Archer: "?"
Did it malfunction?
Archer quickly moved his gaze away from Blue and switched to a passerby next to her.
Since this person didn't have a Poké Ball, the lens switched to detecting the human's combat power.
"5."
Archer breathed a small sigh of relief. It seemed it was just a temporary glitch.
So, Archer held his breath and aimed the lens at the Spiky-Haired Youth on stage, who was still fanning the flames.
"Beep! Beep! Beep! 1000, 3000, 2000..."
Seeing the numbers, Archer couldn't help but sneer again.
As expected, the strength of Professor Oak's grandson was not something an ordinary Novice Trainer could compare to.
But if this was his level, he still posed no threat whatsoever!
"Hmph hmph hah!!"
Hiding behind the curtain, Archer laughed out loud again, his voice unrestrained.
"Why are you laughing again, Boss?" the man in the tailcoat behind him shuddered and asked again, puzzled.
"I'm laughing at the Professor's grandson! With that arrogant attitude, I thought he was some big shot, but he's just a newcomer who's barely started his journey..."
"Beep! Beep! Beep!!!"
However, before the words left his mouth, the detector once again let out a series of urgent beeps, making Archer's expression freeze on his face.
On the lens, the numbers were rising rapidly, reaching five digits in the blink of an eye.
"80000, 90000..."
The numbers were still rising!
Archer's jaw almost dropped to the floor, and his body trembled.
He was terrified.
"Hoo... hoo...!"
He quickly took off the eyepiece, gasping for breath, forcing himself to calm down.
It malfunctioned! Yes, it must have malfunctioned!!
He quickly switched his view back to another passerby.
"5."
It's not malfunctioning?
Archer was now completely bewildered.
Unconsciously, sweat had soaked the back of his tailcoat. Sweat dripped from Archer's forehead, his expression a mess.
But as Team Rocket's Number One Strategist, he still maintained his composure.
In the end, Archer summoned immense courage and slowly aimed the lens at the youth who was still stuffing his face...
He first looked at the electric mouse Pokémon beside him, which was burying its head in its food. Unexpectedly, the detector gave two sets of data simultaneously.
"10," "3000."
And the four-digit number at the end was still constantly rising.
The strangest part was that the two-digit number at the beginning was constantly decreasing.
Archer: "?"
This was the first time he had seen the detector provide such data.
Then, Archer took a deep breath and locked his gaze onto the Poké Balls on Ash's waist.
"500, 700, 900, 8000..."
These were all very normal Novice Trainer stats, though that 8000 at the end was a bit strange.
"So I was just overthinking it after all? Ahahaha!"
Finally, behind the curtain, Archer laughed out loud again.
He laughed wildly, with utter abandon!
As expected, I was just overthinking things!
This scene, however, made the subordinate in the tailcoat behind him finally unable to bear it any longer. He asked with a tremor in his voice:
"Boss, maybe we should stop laughing?"
Archer's gaze hardened. He reined in his laughter and instantly reverted to his previous appearance as the invincible strategist.
With victory in his grasp, his expression turned somewhat ruthless.
"Why can't I laugh? I'm laughing at that country boy. I thought he had some heaven-defying abilities, but it turns out he's just a country bumpkin. It's my fault for being too suspicious and blind. How ridiculous, ridiculous, hahaha..."
Staring at the pathetic data on the lens, Archer burst into laughter once again.
Boom!
The next second, Archer's detector exploded.
