Chapter 432: A Candle in the Wind

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

Its power fully charged, Buzzwole's strength reached its peak. It felt an inexhaustible supply of energy coursing through its body. Its gaze hardened as it stared down the large blue fireball rushing straight at it.

"Nasshuu!"

Buzzwole then raised its two muscular fists, striking forward like twin dragons to meet the attack head-on.

"BOOM!!"

Fists and flames collided, instantly erupting with the terrifying sound of exploding energy. The shockwave was so powerful it made everyone in the arena reel backward.

A violent explosion erupted at the point of impact. A blaze shot toward the sky, transforming into a raging heat wave, while the rising smoke and haze engulfed both Pokémon. Ripples of energy surged wantonly across the arena.

"A battle at the Elite Four level."

In the VIP box, Champion Lance gave his assessment.

Although they were still some distance from the absolute peak, it had to be said that both Incineroar and this never-before-seen muscular mosquito already possessed combat power on par with the Elite Four.

He then turned his gaze to one of the Trainers—the youth in the gray hat.

The Masked Man was one thing—a powerhouse from another region.

But the other person, according to the records, was just an unremarkable new Trainer. Based on feedback from the Gym Leaders, many of his badges had even been gifted out of friendship.

So how had he acquired such terrifying combat power in just a few days? And the Pokémon he had used, from the renegade Dratini to this never-before-seen Buzzwole, had no prior records whatsoever.

Moreover, Lance had a gut feeling that this current level of battle was nowhere near the limit of this Trainer named Red.

"Oh~ Lance, are you afraid a newcomer is going to surpass you?"

The red-haired woman watching the battle beside him suddenly spoke, her tone laced with a hint of teasing.

Elite Four Lorelei sat beside him, dressed in a smart uniform. Her beautiful eyes were captivating, and she wore elegant, round-framed glasses, exuding an air of grace and intellect.

"Hmph!"

Champion Lance merely snorted, sweeping his cloak aside with a stern expression. The icy chill emanating from this woman made him somewhat uncomfortable.

"Jiejie… Speaking of which, the quality of this year's contestants is much higher than in previous years."

The white-haired old woman beside them suddenly interjected with a cold laugh, her expression as sinister as a venomous snake.

She'd heard that Professor Oak's grandson had already left the Kanto Region, which meant her plan to secretly stuff him in a sack and toss him into the sea after the tournament couldn't proceed smoothly. This made Elite Four Agatha quite displeased.

But she had already sent her subordinates to investigate Gary's whereabouts. Once the target was found...

"Jiejie…"

At the thought of that fool Professor Oak kneeling before her and crying his eyes out in the future, Agatha couldn't help but laugh out loud with glee.

Lance & Lorelei: "?"

*What is this old crone laughing about?*

On the arena, the smoke and lingering flames dispersed. The two Pokémon were revealed, no longer cloaked in energy. Instead, they were locked in a stalemate in the center of the arena, fist against fist, once again trapped in a contest of strength.

Evenly matched again.

"Now, use Dynamic Punch!"

Red suddenly called out, his tone quick and decisive this time.

Buzzwole understood. It immediately raised its other muscular fist, which was now wreathed in a terrifying layer of energy. With crackling sounds echoing around it, it unleashed a frontal assault with immense force.

"Incineroar, create some distance!"

But just as Incineroar was about to move, a blue electric arc suddenly flashed across its body. The brief jolt of pain caused it to flinch, and its movements slowed by a fraction.

"BOOM!!"

The next second, the Dynamic Punch slammed home, accompanied by a series of crackles. As it made contact with flesh, it produced a terrifying sound, almost like an explosion.

Super effective!

"Roar—"

Taking a blow to the abdomen, Incineroar was forced to stumble backward to create distance.

However, the Dynamic Punch hadn't been a direct hit; its power was only at about fifty percent. Even so, it was enough to make Incineroar let out a muffled groan, clutching its abdomen as it panted heavily.

The Fighting-type is super effective against the Dark-type. If that punch had landed with full force, it likely would have left Incineroar on its last legs.

"Damn it..."

The Masked Man finally realized it. Flare Blitz caused recoil damage, and Superpower lowered one's own defense. Had his opponent used that momentary pain to seize the initiative?

What a terrifying opponent...

Just then, the Masked Man noticed a faint smile on his opponent's face, as if a plan was unfolding perfectly. This struck fear into his heart, and he quickly snapped his gaze back to the arena.

"Awooo..."

At that moment on the arena, Incineroar suddenly began to stagger in place as if it were drunk. Circling its head were the illusory images of several Rowlets.

It was confused.

Dynamic Punch was a great move, but its weakness was a fatal one: extremely low accuracy.

Even with the recoil damage from Flare Blitz, Red hadn't expected the punch to land perfectly. A glancing blow was enough. All he wanted was Dynamic Punch's additional effect.

Dynamic Punch—it always inflicts confusion upon a successful hit!

And now, with his opponent confused and unable to tell friend from foe, it was the perfect time to make up for Dynamic Punch's low accuracy.

Red bared his true hunter's fangs and commanded in a low voice:

"Buzzwole, one more time! Use Dynamic Punch!"

At his command, Buzzwole clenched its fist again, generating a series of crackles. Its four hind legs sprang into motion as it closed in on its foe, looking unstoppable.

This terrifying offensive immediately threw the Masked Man into a panic. Taking a full-power Dynamic Punch could decide the entire battle.

At this thought, he stopped hesitating. His gaze grew decisive as he roared out his command, resolved to make a painful sacrifice:

"Incineroar, use Fire Spin on yourself!!"

*Confusion has a chance of causing you to attack yourself, so I'll just choose to attack myself directly!*

"Tig-ROAR!"

The confused Incineroar barely registered the Masked Man's voice. It opened its mouth to spew flames, but just as it activated the move, a wave of dizziness washed over it. It ended up aiming its maw at its own chest, and a terrifying torrent of flame erupted.

The flames slammed unimpeded into Incineroar's chest, making a sickening sizzling sound like roasting meat. Even with its powerful resistance to fire, Incineroar couldn't help but let out a wail of pain. The damage was significant.

"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!!"

The flames then exploded outward before shooting toward the sky, forming a massive fire tornado with Incineroar at its center, completely enveloping it.

"Nasshuu..."

The immense, high-temperature flames made the Bug-type Buzzwole hesitate. Its Dynamic Punch, poised in mid-air, halted just outside the inferno, not daring to advance another inch.

"Such guts..."

Seeing this, even Red couldn't help but praise him aloud. This Masked Man was a natural-born warrior, using such a nearly self-destructive method to counter what would have been a fatal blow.

*Pfft.*

Soon, the Fire Spin dissipated, and Incineroar's figure reappeared before everyone. This time, however, its eyes were sharp and clear.

The Fire Spin had not only protected it, but the pain had also snapped Incineroar out of its confusion.

"Tig... roar..."

But the next moment, Incineroar's brow furrowed, and it began to pant heavily.

This near-self-destructive method had also pushed it to the verge of collapse, like a candle in the wind.
