Chapter 407

Chapter 403: Dratini, Use Cotton Guard!

May 15, 2024 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

"The third match of the Top 16 is Trainer Red versus Trainer Jia!!"

As the two Trainers stepped onto the stage, the previously quiet arena was ignited once more. Ash and the others who knew the inside story stared intently at Red's back, curious about what kind of battle he would showcase.

Soon, the Referee in the middle gave the signal.

"This battle will be a 3v3 format. Both of you, please send out a Pokémon!"

Trainer Jia was clearly impatient. Before the Referee could finish speaking, he threw his Poké Ball forward. A red light flashed, revealing a brownish, bird-like Pokémon. Its bone structure was peculiar; a single body had three heads, each with a unique expression.

"Pokedex Beep. Dodrio, the Triple Bird Pokémon. It has three separate minds and will suddenly start fighting amongst itself over trivial matters. It can learn the move Fly, but it cannot fly."

Ash's Pokédex announced.

At the side, Brock wore a smile that suggested this wouldn't be a problem.

"I've seen this Trainer Jia's battles before. He's at the small-fry level. Brother Red should be able to handle him easily... Oh, he does have a Ninetales to watch out for."

This Trainer Jia was the same type of trainer as Xunzi, whom Ash had faced before. They were both one-trick ponies who only knew how to use a single Pokémon. Ban that one, and they're a total pushover.

"But Brother Red should only have a Dratini with him right now, right...?"

Ash couldn't help but mutter. Dratini is a Pokémon with a lot of potential, but its abilities are terrible in its early stages. It's actually very weak right now.

Its level isn't high either. It usually just tags along with Ash's team for meals and does some light physical training. It has basically never battled, making it more of a showpiece than his pink Butterfree.

I just wonder if Brother Red's hat, when worn by someone else, can also access his PC to swap out Pokémon...?

"Bang!"

Soon, Red also threw his Poké Ball. A red light flashed, and it was indeed the Dratini captured in the Safari Zone.

It had a small, light-blue, snake-like body with a white underbelly and a small, delicate head. However, this Dratini's body was slightly longer than others of its kind, as if it had been artificially stretched.

The battle began.

With his explosive temper, Trainer Jia immediately went on the offensive:

"Dodrio, use Fury Attack!"

Dodrio began to run, striding forward on its long legs. Its speed was impressive, kicking up a cloud of dust as it charged ahead with great momentum.

It was clearly a veteran ride Pokémon, with plenty of horsepower.

As it dashed in front of its target, the long, sharp beaks on Dodrio's three heads thrust forward in unison.

Swoosh swoosh swoosh!!

"Dratini, use Dragon Dance."

Red's voice was unhurried, yet perfectly timed, seizing the opportune moment.

"Wuu!"

Dratini let out a low cry. Its serpentine body began to weave and dance on the spot. It was a peculiar dance, agile yet carrying a hint of dominance. As it moved, it managed to evade every single one of Fury Attack's relentless strikes.

Dodrio finished its Fury Attack, then immediately lifted its long hind leg for a low sweep.

But Dratini used the force of the blow, its snake-like body nimbly wrapping around Dodrio's leg. It formed a ring around the limb, then used the momentum to launch itself more than three meters away at the apex of the motion, before landing back on the ground.

"Zing!"

As it landed, several red lights symbolizing a stat boost appeared around its body.

This maneuver alone made the eyes of many in the audience light up, and they began to applaud.

It was both a perfect defense and a perfect stat boost. If this were a Pokémon Contest, Dodrio would already be like a candle in the wind.

"Damn you! How dare you make a fool of me!" Trainer Jia's expression was furious as he immediately commanded:

"Dodrio, use Tri Attack!!"

As he spoke, the Dodrio dug its hind claws into the ground. Its three heads formed a triangle, and before each beak, three different types of energy—one ice, one fire, and one electric—began to gather, gradually coalescing into a triangular energy blast.

Tri Attack is a signature move for all three-headed Pokémon. It gathers three types of elemental energy, deals massive damage, and has a chance to inflict one of three status conditions: paralysis, burn, or freeze.

Dodrio then exerted its strength, pushing the energy blast forward.

Unexpectedly, Red didn't choose to dodge. Instead, he suddenly spoke:

"Dratini, use Cotton Guard!!"

Cotton Guard. This was a terrifyingly powerful move. It creates cotton in front of the user's body to drastically increase its Physical Defense.

While Harden raises Defense and Iron Defense raises it sharply, Cotton Guard is a tier higher—it raises it *drastically*!

But this command left many people slightly stunned.

"Huh? A Pokémon like Dratini can use Cotton Guard?"

From the audience stand, Professor Oak couldn't help but blurt out. Ash and the others might not understand Cotton Guard, but he was an old expert. That move could only be learned by Pokémon that had cotton on their bodies. For example, Mareep, Wooloo, and Swablu relied on the unique cotton on their bodies to achieve that "drastic" level of increase.

What cotton does a Dratini have?

Besides, isn't that a move to defend against Physical Attacks? Tri Attack is a Special Attack...

Professor Oak quickly sat up straight, staring intently at the Dratini.

Meanwhile, in the arena, Dratini's body trembled on the spot. Finally, it actually shook out a few wisps of pure white cotton from its body, which wrapped around it, forming something like two wings.

The amount wasn't much, but it had truly used the move.

"Boom—"

The next second, the Tri Attack collided with the bundle of cotton, setting off a small explosion.

When the smoke and dust cleared, Dratini appeared in the same spot. The bundle of cotton was still wrapped around its body, and other than a few scorched marks, it seemed unharmed. This left both Trainer Jia and his Dodrio stunned.

"How is that possible? Cotton shouldn't have any effect against Special Attacks!?"

Professor Oak was dumbfounded.

"No, it doesn't look like it's just cotton..."

Ash, who was next to him, suddenly spoke up. He was squinting, trying to get a closer look from a distance. His powerful vision finally allowed him to notice something.

He saw that on the white cotton, there was also a faint silver light, twinkling, just like...

"Scales?!"

Ash couldn't help but exclaim.

Dragon-type Pokémon often shed their skin and scales as they grow and evolve. Ash had seen the dragon scales this Dratini shed daily; they were very small and shimmered with a silver light.

And now, the cotton was actually filled with tiny dragon scales...?

Red: "..."

On the field, he fell silent for a moment, secretly recalling the first time he had examined this Dratini's body. He had been just as baffled back then.

He remembered the mother Dragonair in the Safari Zone had once said that this Dratini's father was a male Dragonair, but he had a gender difference from her.

Although he also had a slender, sky-blue body, the male's belly was larger, and there were two white formations on the sides of his body.

According to that male Dragonair, in nature, males often have flashier physical traits in order to compete for a mate. For example, a male lion has a mane around its head, and only a male peacock displays its tail feathers, and so on...

Therefore, it was normal for a male Dragonair to grow pure white cotton and have some differences in its form.

And so, the mother Dragonair was thoroughly satisfied.

The next day, that male Dragonair was never seen again.

And then, Red discovered that this Dratini had an extra egg move.

Cotton Guard.
