Chapter 374: Bellsprout, the Unremarkable Pokémon

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

"Chaa!"

At the same time, four figures rapidly approached. It seemed as if every shadow was a solid body, making them completely indistinguishable.

"Saur!"

Facing this attack for the second time, Ivysaur was no longer as flustered as before. Instead, it held its breath, its large eyes wide as it cautiously scanned its surroundings, as calm and steady as it usually was.

This was the proper bearing for a Grass-type Pokémon.

Seeing the target draw close enough, Ash immediately waved his hand.

"Now! Use Vine Whip!!"

"Saur!"

Ivysaur let out a low cry, a fierce glint instantly appearing in its eyes. From the base of the flower on its back, it lashed out with numerous Vine Whips, which shot out in four directions simultaneously like nimble snakes.

"A miracle! Ivysaur actually used... one, two... eight Vine Whips!! That's incredible!"

Eight Vine Whips lashing out at once caused the entire Battle Arena to erupt with a huge roar.

Most of the people here were from the Kanto Region and knew that their hometown's "toad" at its second stage could at most produce four Vine Whips. Only upon evolving to the 003 stage could it unleash eight whips at once. It was safe to say that this Ivysaur had broken through its own limits.

"Chaa?"

Scyther's flight faltered for a moment. With eight Vine Whips attacking four directions at once, there was no need to distinguish the real one from the fakes; it just had to attack them all simultaneously.

"Swish! Swish! Swish! Whap!"

Three whips pierced through afterimages in succession, but the final Vine Whip finally struck a solid body, slapping hard against Scyther's abdomen. The latter's brow furrowed slightly as it let out a muffled grunt.

However, the offensive was not over. The Vine Whips that had pierced the afterimages in the other three directions did not retract. Instead, they continued to extend, then changed course, converging on a single point.

"Snap!"

In the next instant, all eight Vine Whips had firmly locked onto the eight major joints of Scyther's body, immobilizing it.

"Great job, Ivysaur!"

Ash nodded to himself, pleased with his Ivysaur's maneuver.

The blessing of the Mysterious Garden allowed Ivysaur to break its species' limits and reach the realm of eight Vine Whips. It might seem like just four extra whips, but it demonstrated an incredibly high level of control over Grass-type energy.

Attacking in four directions at once was the result of Ivysaur's months of training and battling in the Backyard.

After all, to stake out its own territory and become king, it couldn't expect opponents to engage in polite one-on-one duels. It had to be on guard against potential opponents appearing at any time, which forced Ivysaur to master multitasking and multi-threaded operations.

Thinking of this, Ash waved his hand.

"Now, smash it into the ground!!"

Ivysaur understood. All eight Vine Whips exerted force at once, smashing Scyther heavily onto the ground. The impact gouged out a small crater of crushed stone and dealt significant damage to Scyther.

The attack wasn't over. Taking advantage of this brief interval, Ivysaur tossed it high into the sky. At that moment, the flower on its back continuously absorbed the sunlight, gradually turning golden as a terrifying power gathered around it.

Although the sun was dazzling right now, it wasn't a full-on Sunny Day—it could only be considered a mild one.

But it was enough!

There is no mercy in battle. Ash understood this principle well, giving his opponent no chance to think as he immediately shouted:

"Now! Use Solar Beam!!"

"BOOM!!!"

After a few seconds' delay, the golden light from the flower on Ivysaur's back blossomed to its peak. It shot out as a brilliant, golden pulse of energy, streaking straight toward the target in the sky and emitting a shudder-inducing, scorching heat along the way.

Scyther had just recovered from the dizziness of the slam when it looked up to see what seemed like a scorching sun rapidly approaching. Its body was struck head-on by the Solar Beam, and for a moment, it felt as if it had been completely scorched.

"WHOOSH!!"

The laser-like energy flashed past, tearing across the heavens. Scyther was instantly unable to battle, black smoke billowing from its body as it fell powerlessly from the sky. A faint, burnt smell lingered in the air.

"Scyther is unable to battle! Ivysaur wins the second match!!"

The Referee shouted the verdict without even checking, his voice like a block of solid sodium dropped into a pool, causing the entire venue to erupt into cheers once again.

"Astounding! Absolutely astounding! Ash's Ivysaur turned the tables with a combo attack that left Scyther completely helpless!!"

The commentator was also roaring himself hoarse, his voice full of dramatic flair.

He had just received a notice from The Officials: commentate well, and his earlier mistake of identifying 002 as 003 would be forgiven. His chicken leg for tonight was still secure.

"So, can Ash repeat his amazing performance from the first day and pull off a three-Pokémon sweep with just one Ivysaur?!"

He was an old pro at hyping up the crowd. During the break in the match, he plunged the audience into noisy discussion once again.

"I support our hometown's frog! Get that three-Pokémon sweep!"

"No way, it's already in a flickering state."

"Xunzi's second Pokémon was a Scyther that strong; her third will only be stronger."

"And, I gotta say, Xunzi is really cute."

"By the way, where is Maiden Town? Oh, I'm asking for a friend."

In the Battle Arena.

"Ash of Pallet Town, you are indeed strong."

Xunzi recalled her Scyther. Although the previous battle had shocked her somewhat, she hadn't lost her composure. Her serious eyes quietly watched Ash and Ivysaur on the other side.

"Next, my ace will not fall, and it will complete a three-Pokémon sweep!"

She declared in a low voice, her expression grave as she drew her third Poké Ball with a flick of her wrist.

"What do you think, Ivysaur? Want to switch out?"

This stance made Ash wary. He stood ready and asked.

"Saur!"

Ivysaur shook its head in reply. Although it was already in a flickering state, it wanted to see the opponent first. If it was a weakling, it could easily score a three-Pokémon sweep. In the future, that would be a resounding battle record to help it rule the Backyard and command more respect.

If it was an unbeatable foe, it could perform a "Grass Glide Retreat," running away to tag someone else in.

Soon, under the serious gazes of Ash and Ivysaur, Xunzi finally threw her third Poké Ball.

"Pop!"

A flash of red light, and a Pokémon less than half a meter tall appeared in everyone's line of sight.

This Pokémon's body structure was extremely simple. Its body and legs were just thin, brown vines, as simple and casual as a child's stick-figure doodle.

On either side of the vines grew two broad green leaves, swaying in the wind like arms.

Its head was shaped like a trumpet flower, and its expression was quite blank.

"Beep. Bellsprout, a dime-a-dozen Pokémon. Utterly unremarkable and found everywhere. If you use a quick draw slash on any patch of grass, you might just slice a Bellsprout in half."

The Pokédex noted.

"Bell..."

Bellsprout seemed to be responding to the Pokédex's introduction, letting out a cry. It looked completely harmless.

"Unremarkable?!"

For some reason, hearing that word made Ash suddenly shiver.
