Chapter 114: VS Kadabra! (Part 1)

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

Ash knew his Charmander had already reached the verge of evolution, but now that Squirtle had also evolved, it was a pleasant surprise.

No, he should be called Wartortle now.

"Beep. Wartortle, the Turtle Pokémon. After evolution, its physical strength greatly increases. Its ears and tail are symbols of longevity. Faithfully changing its water daily is said to extend the Trainer's lifespan as well."

The Pokédex automatically reported, and then it suddenly flashed with another red light.

"Beep. Wartortle has learned a new move: Whirlpool."

Hearing this, Ash was delighted. Another pleasant surprise.

However, the newly evolved Wartortle was still panting, and its near-zero stamina was unchanged.

This had to be a quick battle!

With this in mind, Ash wasted no more time and immediately called out the newly learned move.

"Wartortle, use Whirlpool!"

"Wartle!"

After evolving, Wartortle's voice had also deepened. A cold glint flashed across its sunglasses as it raised its hands, condensing a watery vortex above its head. In just a few seconds, it expanded to a size that covered half the battle arena.

The water spun wildly in mid-air, forming a gigantic, funnel-shaped vortex that cast an immense shadow over everyone.

Then, it fiercely flung the vortex toward its target. The sheer size of it left Mr. Mime with nowhere to dodge, forcing it to conjure a Light Screen on the spot in an attempt to block it.

*Woosh, woosh, woosh—*

Faced with the massive whirlpool, now amplified by its Torrent ability, the Light Screen was like a lone boat in a storm, offering no resistance. Soon, Mr. Mime was swept into the whirlpool along with its Light Screen.

"Bari~"

Constantly spinning in the water current made Mr. Mime dizzy, and its stamina was being steadily drained. Sabrina quickly commanded:

"Use Confusion! Follow the current to escape!"

"Bari!"

Mr. Mime understood. It coated its body in blue psychic energy, using the current to maintain its form and stay relatively still within the vortex. Then, just as its body was nearest to the edge, its psychic energy suddenly flared, and it broke free from the massive whirlpool.

With a stylish backflip, Mr. Mime prepared for a cool landing.

"Shing!"

A flash of white light from the ground blinded it. Below, Wartortle was already in a crouch, the power building in its head having reached its peak.

"Now, use Skull Bash!!"

Ash roared.

"Wartle!"

Wartortle stomped hard on the ground, its body shooting out like a rocket launching into the sky with a series of rumbles and rolling shockwaves. The sheer force of this attack made even the spectators, a whole floor above, jolt and lean back instinctively.

"CRASH!!"

Suspended in mid-air, Mr. Mime couldn't even form its signature barrier before the attack struck it squarely in the chest. A sharp pain shot through it instantly, and it was flung backward as if its entire body had been pierced, flying dozens of meters through the sky like a cannonball, even breaking through the railing and soaring past the edge of the tall building.

"..."

Sabrina's beautiful eyes widened slightly. A blue light barely managed to catch Mr. Mime, but by then, it had been knocked dizzy by the headbutt, its hands dangling limply.

"First match, Mr. Mime is unable to battle. Wartortle is the winner!"

Sabrina's Father promptly made the call.

"What a powerful headbutt!"

"This is the first time I've ever seen a Pokémon evolve during a battle."

"And its Torrent ability is rare, too!"

"This match alone was worth the price of admission, hehe."

The surrounding audience chattered excitedly, completely captivated by the very first battle between Ash and Sabrina.

Seeing this, the Silph Co. President and Sabrina's family nodded in silent approval. This was exactly the effect they were hoping for.

"You did great, Wartortle!"

"Wartle!"

Wartortle joyfully took off its sunglasses and leaped to hug Ash, its bright eyes sparkling. Although its stamina was nearly depleted, the battle had been incredibly exhilarating.

Ash returned the hug, stroking Wartortle's head. While it wasn't as smooth as it was in its Squirtle stage, the new matte texture felt quite nice to the touch.

"Take a rest. Leave the rest to them."

Ash carried Wartortle over to the Friends and Family Seating. Then, his expression hardened as he took out a Poké Ball and returned to the battle arena.

There were still two tough fights ahead…

Soon, Sabrina threw out her second Poké Ball.

It had a golden-yellow body, a long, fox-like head, and the appearance of an old man. In its hand, it held a peculiar spoon.

It was the Kadabra he had battled once before.

Sabrina's psychic powers could guarantee an on-the-spot evolution, but they couldn't reverse it. This meant the Kadabra's level wasn't excessively high, which helped calm Ash's nerves. He decisively threw out his second Poké Ball.

A red light flashed, and a Pokémon resembling a large, green garlic bulb appeared. Its lower body was like a toad's, and it had an honest, simple-looking expression.

Upon appearing, it was startled by the surrounding atmosphere, but it quickly recovered and began to look at its opponent with a serious expression.

"A Bulbasaur? Is that Trainer an idiot?"

"I thought Psychic was super-effective against Poison? So this is what they call a freebie. Learned something new."

"I bet Bulbasaur goes down in three turns."

The surrounding discussion made Ash frown.

"Huh, is there some kind of strategy behind sending out Bulbasaur?"

"A reverse-matchup strategy, I guess. Ash is an old hand at this."

Misty and Blue were also discussing it, both failing to understand his play. But next to them, Brock blinked his deep, wise eyes, a look of someone who had seen through everything on his face.

The three starter Pokémon were caught at almost the same time. Squirtle had evolved, and Charmander was on the brink of evolution. Brock figured that Ash wanted to use this battle to ignite Bulbasaur's fighting spirit and trigger its evolution.

A type disadvantage and immense pressure were what would make Bulbasaur erupt with new potential.

"Ash... has grown."

Brock nodded. The Ash of today was definitely not the same man who used to be stuck on level negative one; he had at least reached level one now.

A sharp gaze from behind made Ash jolt. Standing in the battle arena, he shook his head and focused his attention back on the fight.

"Battle, begin!"

With a loud shout from Sabrina's Father, Ash once again took the initiative.

"Bulbasaur, use Razor Leaf!"

"Saur!"

Bulbasaur's bulb trembled, and it instantly flung out countless sharp leaves. "Swish, swish, swish," they all shot out, their strength even greater than the earlier Magical Leaf.

Sabrina's expression remained unchanged as she spoke coolly:

"Use Psybeam!"

"Kadabra!"

Kadabra gave the spoon in its hand a slight twirl, and a spiraling, colorful wave surged forward, instantly freezing all the Razor Leaf blades in mid-air.

"Send them all back!"

"Swish, swish, swish!"

The Razor Leaf blades reversed course, flying back rapidly. Their speed hadn't decreased but had actually increased, as if Kadabra itself had launched the attack.

"Bulbasaur, use Vine Whip to knock them all down!"

"Saur!"

Bulbasaur showed no surprise. Two slender vines extended from its sides, and it began to whip them furiously at the incoming green leaves.

"Papapa!"

Its expression was simple and honest, yet its eyes took in every single leaf. Its whipping vines accurately struck down each leaf to the ground, and it didn't even seem to be out of breath.

Ash's eyes suddenly lit up, and he shouted:

"Now, use Vine Whip!"

Kadabra had expected Bulbasaur to continue whipping away the last few Razor Leaf blades. But instead, Bulbasaur ignored them, letting the leaves land on its body. Two vines shot out with sudden force, wrapping around Kadabra's body in the next second.

Razor Leaf wasn't very effective on it to begin with, let alone when taking hits at a fraction of their power.

Sabrina quickly snapped, "Kadabra, use Psybeam again!"

"Kadabra!"

Psybeam was activated once more. The vines binding its body were immediately covered in a layer of blue light, which then crept along them, rapidly closing in on Bulbasaur.

"Saur!"

But before the light could reach it, Bulbasaur suddenly planted its feet firmly and centered its power. Then, with a sudden, powerful twist of its body, it used the vines to fling Kadabra, sending it crashing heavily onto the edge of the battle arena.

Seeing this, Ash subconsciously snapped his fingers and laughed heartily.

"Nice one!"

Bulbasaur's steady stance was absolutely dependable!
