Chapter 1136: Mossdeep Gym

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

After nearly a day of sailing, Ash and his group successfully landed on a large island.

The west coast of the island where Mossdeep City was located was a shallow beach that stretched for several kilometers.

At low tide, the beach expanded to five or six times its usual size. As a result, whenever the tide receded, the western coast of Mossdeep City teemed with countless young men foraging on the beach.

"Look what I found?! It’s a sea urchin!"

"Hey everyone, see this hole? There's a big one in here. I'm just gonna pour a little salt in."

The sight of these tide-foragers and their cameramen was common, creating a scene bustling with activity.

Stepping onto the land, they walked along the shallow beach. Seawater occasionally surged up over their ankles, forcing them to carry their shoes and walk slowly forward.

They watched as, every ten meters or so, a young man held a metal bucket in one hand and a pair of tongs in the other, speaking eloquently about something.

Behind him was a cameraman filming him.

In front of the man on camera was another young man, also carrying a metal bucket, though his purpose wasn't immediately clear.

But while others were picking up sea creatures and putting them into their buckets... he was doing the exact opposite, occasionally tossing out jellyfish, starfish, crabs, and the like in front of the man on camera.

The man on camera would then flush with excitement, as if discovering a new continent. He would speak animatedly while picking up these sea creatures—which had been bought from a market in advance—and tossing them into his own bucket.

"Is that the props department? What an incredible scene..."

"So this is how it really is?"

"What a bunch of clever tricksters!"

Ash and his three companions stared blankly at the duo's toss-and-grab routine, like country folk who had just arrived in the city for the first time.

This was the largest foreshore for gathering seafood in the entire Hoenn Region. Especially with the rise of short-form videos in recent years, it attracted countless tourists annually who came to experience foraging for themselves.

"I heard there's also a mysterious cave to the north. The entire inside of the cave is flooded with seawater. When the tide goes out, tourists can even enter the ice cave in its deepest part."

Brock explained to the group, holding up a map.

It was said to contain the legendary Never-Melt Ice.

The group subconsciously looked north. They could indeed see a raised hill, but it was separate from the large island where Mossdeep City was located, connected only by a long stretch of shallow beach.

Ash remembered that in the Kanto Region, the Seafoam Islands also had a mysterious cave with Never-Melt Ice.

Despite the scorching summer heat outside, the inside was as bone-chillingly cold as a snowy mountain.

"Let's go, let's go! To the Mossdeep Gym first!"

Sawyer urged them on excitedly.

Compared to all these flashy distractions, he was much more eager to see one of Ash's Gym Battles again.

Hearing this, Ash snapped back to his senses, expressing that great minds think alike. He immediately headed toward the center of the island.

An hour later.

Mossdeep City.

Ash and his three companions had arrived at the city's Pokémon Center.

This city, situated on its own island, felt more like a large market; the multi-story buildings weren't very densely packed.

A few years ago, it was a quiet, relaxing town for health and leisure, much like Fortree City or Verdanturf Town. It was only after the tide-foraging videos became wildly popular in recent years, leading to a significant increase in foot traffic, that it received an exceptional promotion to "city" status.

"And I heard this is the hometown of the former League Champion, Mr. Steven Stone!!"

Sawyer said, reeling off the facts with pride. Steven Stone was the idol he admired most.

Cool looks, an elegant demeanor, and immense strength—he was definitely the most perfect man!

Over the past month, however, the target of Sawyer's admiration had begun to gradually shift to the man standing next to him...

Although he wasn't as cool or elegant as Steven Stone, his immense strength was something Sawyer also found as unfathomably deep as the ocean, something to aspire to...

Ash: "?"

Seeing Sawyer suddenly staring at him with such a fiery expression, Ash shot him a look of confusion.

Still, he hadn't expected Mossdeep City to be Mr. Steven Stone's hometown.

Ash had always thought his hometown was Rustboro City, where the Devon Corporation's headquarters was located.

Seeing that it was still early, after restoring his Pokémon's stamina, Ash impatiently dragged the others directly to the Mossdeep Gym.

Sawyer, of course, followed along, his eyes shining with admiration.

"Sigh..."

This, however, made Brock and Blue sigh, feeling a bit listless.

When you've just arrived in a new city, the first thing you should do is relax and get some rest!

Having two battle fanatics in the team at the same time didn't seem to be a good thing.

That Sawyer was just a smaller, equally hyperactive version of Ash!

"Ash, I heard the Mossdeep Gym is a Gym that specializes in the Psychic type, and they use the extremely rare Double Battle format. Getting the Badge won't be easy."

Sawyer added as they walked.

"A Double Battle, huh..."

Ash nodded, thinking as he walked.

The streets of Mossdeep City were paved with flat stone paths, and the buildings were neatly arranged on both sides, creating a very simple layout.

Speaking of which, he had just had a perfect Double Battle with Phoebe of the Elite Four a few days ago.

However, that was a cooperative Double Battle, with each person commanding one Pokémon... whereas in a Gym's Double Battle, the challenger naturally has to control two Pokémon at the same time, which undoubtedly multiplies the difficulty.

And it was the most troublesome type to deal with, the Psychic type.

"Ugh, this is troublesome..."

Ash frowned deeply. The unpredictable Psychic type was the kind of opponent he was worst at dealing with.

Whether it was their hard-to-defend-against long-range telekinesis or all sorts of bizarre support moves, they were all extremely difficult to handle.

"I heard the Gym Leader of Mossdeep Gym was just recently appointed, so it should be a lot easier..."

Seeing the troubled expression on Ash's face, Sawyer added another reminder, trying to console him.

But upon hearing this, Ash's expression changed again, his face looking even more troubled.

More than just troublesome... he would much rather battle a strong opponent!

For instance, he had swept the newly appointed Gym Leader of Lavaridge Gym three-to-nothing, and that battle had been somewhat unsatisfying.

Sawyer: "?"

He simply couldn't comprehend Ash's train of thought.

Before long, the group arrived in front of a strange, enormous building.

The entire building looked like... half of a giant eggshell, placed upside down on the ground. Its smooth surface reflected a dazzling light.

"It's supposed to look like a planet,"

Brock pointed out. Around the middle of the hemispherical gym, there was a band resembling planetary rings.

So Ash didn't delay any further. He took the lead, walked up to the main entrance, and raised his fist to knock.

"I'm Ash from Pallet Town, and I'm here to challenge the Moss—"

But before he could finish his declaration of war, the closed doors in front of him were suddenly covered in a strange, blue psychic light.

Creeaak!

The doors then opened on their own, which was rather eerie.

"—deep Gym."

Ash braced himself and finished his line. Under the watchful eyes of his companions, he slowly stepped through the gym's entrance.
