Chapter 1102: Gary, Your Future is Limitless!
May 15, 2024 | Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)
Without stopping on the long, narrow, stream-filled valley road, Ash and his two companions continued north.
Following the directions on the map, Fortree City, where the sixth Gym was located, wasn't far.
However, in between, there was a special organization—the Weather Institute.
At the end of this canyon area, on a flat highland, a rather luxurious building appeared before Ash and his companions.
It was a two-story villa, with a sign for the Weather Institute hanging above the entrance.
"Beep, beep. The Weather Institute. This is a place that specializes in researching the Hoenn Region's weather patterns. It is said they are also secretly developing advanced technology in an attempt to artificially control the weather."
Having arrived at a new place, Ash's Pokedex automatically provided an introduction.
This made Blue, who was beside him, unable to resist tapping her own Pokedex.
Why didn't her Pokedex have such a flashy function?!
However, before the Pokedex could finish speaking, a resonant voice suddenly came from the side.
"Where did this strange information come from? We at the Weather Institute are completely law-abiding citizens!"
A middle-aged man wearing a researcher's lab coat walked over. He had a square, serious-looking face, but his expression held a hint of strangeness.
The Pokedex's tone was outrageous; it almost made their Weather Institute sound like some kind of evil organization.
But he couldn't refute any of it on a literal level.
Seeing the trio look at him with an "And you are?" expression, the researcher coughed drily and introduced himself:
"Ahem, I am the Director of the Weather Institute!"
As he spoke, he didn't forget to build a positive public image for his institute.
"Our institute's tasks are all about actively developing weather prediction and broadcasting for the public, and warning about climate disasters. As for artificially controlling the weather, we only do that when a place experiences extreme weather, such as a drought or flood."
We're an organization completely dedicated to the public good!
Ash also noticed a greyish-white Pokémon floating by the Director's shoulder.
"Wooo~"
Like a bubble, it had a large head with a curled tuft of hair-like fuzz sticking up.
"Beep. Castform, the Weather Pokémon. It has the special ability to change its physical form along with changes in the weather."
This time, it was Blue's Pokedex that announced it first.
"It changes its form based on the weather?"
Ash looked surprised; it was the first time he had heard of such a thing.
Noticing that the Director was still looking at them, the three of them quickly sat up straight and introduced themselves.
"I'm Ash from Pallet Town."
"I'm Blue from Pallet Town."
"I'm..."
"Pallet Town?!"
But upon hearing the words "Pallet Town," the Director's eyes instantly lit up.
"Then you must know Gary from Pallet Town, right?"
"Gary?"
"We know him well."
Ash and Blue exchanged a glance and replied casually.
Speaking of which, when they had parted ways with Gary, he had been heading to the Hoenn Region.
It seemed his destination was the Weather Institute?!
Ash subconsciously glanced toward the building in front of them. Did that mean that guy was inside right now?
He hadn't seen Gary in so long, and although Ash had almost forgotten about him during his journey...
...now that he was brought up again, a sudden, urgent desire to see him welled up inside.
"Oh, Gary isn't here anymore."
The Director saw Ash's movement and said with a smile.
Seeing their travel-worn appearances, he then led them toward the research institute.
"Wooo~!"
The bobbing Castform followed them, floating up and down. Its lighthearted appearance was quite eye-catching.
"Ah, Gary... he is absolutely the most brilliant young man I have ever met. His future is limitless!"
Along the way, the Director did not hold back his praise for Gary.
"I can only say, he truly lives up to being Professor Oak's grandson. Whether it's his vision, his wealth of knowledge, or even his courage and breadth of mind... forget people his own age, even researchers in their thirties or forties might not be at his level."
Following behind and listening to these words of praise, the corners of Ash and Blue's mouths turned up slightly, almost imperceptibly.
For some reason, even though just thinking of that guy's face was usually irritating...
...hearing an outsider praise Gary so highly now, it felt as if...
...it felt as if they were being praised themselves?
They entered the Weather Institute, into the lobby and rest area on the first floor.
The receptionist brought each of them a cup of hot tea. After all, the environment in this region was quite damp and cold, and nothing was more comforting than a hot cup of tea.
"Hah!"
After drinking half a cup and sinking into the soft sofa, all three of them let out a long sigh of relief.
Ash then continued to ask:
"So, where has that guy... my best friend, Gary, gone now?"
Since they had come all this way, they should at least meet up.
It would be the perfect chance to let that guy see how strong he had become!
It seemed that in the days since they separated, Gary's career as a researcher had been progressing with fiery momentum...
But Ash was more concerned with his Pokémon battling skills.
I wonder if he can still compete with me now?
It would be best to have a battle right on the spot!
"Gary has already left with a team for the Unova Region."
The Director, also holding a cup of hot tea, began to explain:
"You probably already know this, but didn't our Weather Institute recently launch an emergency operation..."
"Oh yeah, I know about that. It's the plan to lure Groudon back to the Hoenn Region, right?"
Brock chimed in.
Hearing this, the Director raised an eyebrow. The word "lure" was a bit inappropriate...
...but that was the general idea.
He nodded, his smiling expression turning serious, tinged with a hint of helplessness.
"I'm sure that as you traveled here, you've already noticed that there's a problem with the weather in the eastern area of the Hoenn Region, haven't you?"
The three of them nodded. Just yesterday they had experienced that bizarre sea area.
The rain and intense sun switching back and forth had left them completely numb.
For the Weather Institute, which specialized in studying the weather, this phenomenon had undoubtedly become their most important research topic.
"However, this is only the beginning... If this isn't resolved, this phenomenon of rapid weather changes will probably cover the entire Hoenn Region, and both the frequency and the intensity will increase."
Right now, the rapid switching is merely an inconvenience; it hasn't reached the level of a disaster.
In the eyes of many, it might even be considered some kind of fun, special phenomenon.
But if it were high-frequency switches between giant thunderstorms and the scorching sun of a drought...
Just thinking about it made the Weather Institute Director's scalp tingle with dread.
"And the cause of all this... is just one thing."
"Groudon."
This time, it was Ash's turn to answer quickly.
Groudon, like his Torkoal, has the ability to make the sun blaze intensely upon entering a battle.
But the former is an existence on the level of an ancient deity; its own power is enough to change the climate of an entire region.
