Chapter 1095: Pokémon Day Care
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)
East of Verdanturf Town, Route 117.
After the Pokémon Ring Competition, Ash and his companions headed toward Mauville City.
This was a long, narrow route. The ground in the center was quite flat, forming a straight, wide road.
On both sides grew dense Tall Grass and gardens.
"Wuu~"
"Wuuu~~"
Above the gardens, besides the beautiful Beautifly dancing in the air, two types of chubby, glowing bugs were also drifting about. They were the very same Volbeat and Illumise they had seen at the Pokémon Ring Competition earlier.
Among the blades of grass in the gardens, a few Pokémon holding roses in both hands danced gracefully, filling the entire route with a pleasant fragrance.
"Are those Female Pokémon Breeders? What an incredible sight!"
Brock stared with a look of fascination at the few Female Pokémon Breeders scattered between the gardens. They were gently caring for the wild Pokémon, and to him, the sight was as beautiful as any peerless scenery.
Of course, he completely ignored the Male Pokémon Breeders, photoshopping them out of his view.
Verdanturf Town and the adjacent Route 117 were, by nature, very leisurely places, home to many wild Pokémon. They also attracted numerous Breeders to settle down and hone their craft here.
But as for what this route was most famous for...
*Clang, clang, clang!!*
*Clang, clang, clang!!*
Suddenly, a loud noise erupted from the road in front of Ash and his companions, and several dark figures rushed toward them at high speed.
"Hey, hey, hey!! You guys, get out of the way!!"
"This isn't a sidewalk!!"
It turned out to be a few muscular Cyclists riding speed-bicycles, accelerating straight for them.
Ash didn't understand what was happening but felt it was something impressive. He instinctively dodged to the side of the central road, letting the Cyclists brush past him.
He also noticed that although these people were wearing extremely simple shorts and short-sleeved shirts, they each carried a rather square, large backpack on their backs that was over a meter tall.
"Are they in some kind of competition?"
A weighted bicycle race?
Ash and his companions were baffled but could only continue forward.
*Clang, clang, clang!!*
Along the way, a speeding bicycle would dart past them from time to time, and the rider's back would also be laden with a large, square backpack.
Was this some kind of local custom?
The strangest thing was that after a while, Ash saw the same Cyclist who had just brushed past them turn back and zip past them again.
By the time the three of them had walked to about the midpoint of Route 117, the gardens on either side had disappeared, replaced by a vast, boundless grassland.
At first glance, at least, they couldn't see any end to it.
This grassland was home to a wide variety of Pokémon, unlike the previous garden grasslands, which only had local Pokémon like Illumise and Volbeat.
Ash even saw a few Pokémon from his hometown, and even some from the Johto Region, which felt very familiar.
On this side of the road, a one-meter-high fence had been erected, preventing direct entry.
"What is this place?"
Greatly curious, Ash and his companions walked a few dozen more steps and finally saw a large wooden house set within the fence. It seemed to be the entrance and exit for this large grassland.
The sign on the wooden house finally made them realize where they were. "Hoenn Day Care!"
Ash had seen a Pokémon Day Care before.
It specialized in taking care of Pokémon temporarily left by Trainers—for a fee, of course.
Besides providing daily food and drink, it could also train a Pokémon's level a little, making it a much better storage option than a Computer.
But compared to simple caretaking, today's Pokémon Day Cares had developed a primary business.
Breeding and egg hatching.
This was actually already quite popular in the Johto Region. After all, back then, almost every time Ash passed a Gym, he was asked to help with hatching eggs.
And since the Pokémon Day Care held a large number of Pokémon from many Trainers, its variety was rich, and so its selection of egg groups was naturally very complete.
Coupled with the excellent natural surroundings, and as the saying goes, "idleness breeds mischief," the naughty ideas in the minds of the Pokémon left here were greatly amplified.
Having grown tired from walking, Ash and his companions decided to go to the Pokémon Day Care to rest for a bit.
"Alright, I'll be counting on you."
However, just as they reached the entrance of the Pokémon Day Care, they saw a fully-equipped Cyclist pushing a bicycle out.
Following behind him was a Middle-aged Man in a sharp suit, looking quite well-to-do.
He held a stack of square boxes, piled nearly as tall as a person.
"Alright then, I'm entrusting these six Pokémon eggs to you. Please make sure they hatch as soon as possible!"
"Leave it all to me, Boss!"
The Cyclist carefully hoisted them onto his back. Then, just like the other Cyclists they had seen, he began to speed off toward one end of the road, quickly disappearing from view.
Ash: "..."
*So they're hatching eggs?!*
*But this man is...?*
"Excuse me, what are you guys doing?" Ash couldn't help but go over and ask.
Noticing Ash and his companions approaching, the Middle-aged Man rubbed his head, looking rather embarrassed.
"Haha... you three kids. I'm just having him act as a surrogate... for hatching the eggs, that is. Heh heh..."
Listening to the man's explanation, it was as if a whole new world had suddenly opened up for Ash and his companions, and they marveled at the idea.
This Middle-aged Man was an office worker from the neighboring Mauville City. He had been diligently slogging away at work for years, accumulating a good amount of savings, but in the process, he had abandoned his childhood dream of becoming a powerful Trainer.
After all, not everyone could throw themselves onto the path of a Trainer with the same fearless determination as Ash.
Therefore, now that his work had become much easier, he planned to rediscover his childhood and become a Trainer to challenge the Gyms.
But he wasn't a complete novice like he was back then, who would just catch a random Pokémon on the roadside and set off...
A good start could make this path much simpler and smoother.
Hatching eggs was the best choice.
Optimize the breeding, select offspring with good aptitude, and then start the journey!
"But I can't possibly waste all my time on hatching eggs right from the start, can I?"
The most troublesome part of hatching eggs is, without a doubt, the long hatching period.
As for the breeding process, egg laying, and all that, the Pokémon Day Care can handle it for you.
But once an egg is produced, they'll call you immediately and have the Trainer take it away for hatching.
So, the Middle-aged Man paid to hire a Triathlete to race around with his eggs to reduce the hatching time.
He provides the money; the athlete provides the time and effort. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement.
"The time it takes for an egg to hatch shortens based on the distance a Trainer travels," the Middle-aged Man explained.
A normal hatching can take anywhere from one month to half a year...
But by having a person carry them and ride a bicycle back and forth on this long, straight road, the time can basically be shortened to one-tenth of that.
In more extreme cases, an egg might even hatch in three days.
"Human pregnancies are the same."
The Middle-aged Man added a piece of trivia.
"The common saying is that pregnancy lasts ten months... In reality, this just represents the approximate time it would take a human to cover the 'distance' required from conception to birth."
"If a pregnant woman were to go on a rampage riding a bicycle every day, she could totally achieve a five-month, or even a three-month pregnancy."
Ash: "..."
*That really is some obscure trivia...*
