Chapter 1085: Pokémon Ring Competition

Author: Samsung Charmander

Several days later.

Ash and his two companions returned to Rustboro City, then without stopping, they passed straight through the Rusturf Tunnel to the east.

It was a long, narrow, and straight path with no forks. However, the ground was still littered with shattered rocks, indicating it had only recently been cleared.

There were no other Pokémon in this cave, but it was inhabited by a large number of Whismur.

These Pokémon seemed to have been attracted by the continuous blasting noises from the construction a few months ago.

"Whismur, huh...?"

This reminded Ash of Zinnia's Whismur, a Pokémon that seemed to fight using sound.

However, seeing the group of Whismur peacefully napping together, the trio decided not to try and capture any. Instead, they chose to tiptoe quickly through the cave.

These were chain-reacting Pokémon; Astonish and Screech could create an infinite positive feedback loop.

Exiting the cave, a gentle, warm breeze blew across the trio's faces.

"Hah!"

Ash couldn't help but take a deep breath, finding the air outside the cave exceptionally fresh.

Before their eyes was a sea of green, with extremely high vegetation coverage that was very pleasing to the eye.

Not far away, surrounded by a field of wild grass, was a town that didn't look too large; you could see from one end to the other at a glance.

It probably had only about a hundred households, making it about half the size of Pallet Town.

Even the ground in the town was a soft lawn.

"Beep. Beep. Verdanturf Town, famous for its fresh air, is known as the most livable town in the Hoenn Region."

Upon arriving at a new location, the Pokédex automatically broadcasted the information.

The trio’s curiosity was immediately piqued, and they hurried forward, officially entering the small town.

*Pop! Pop!*

At that moment, in an open plaza at the edge of the town, some sort of festival seemed to be underway, with streamer fireworks constantly being shot into the sky.

In mid-air, there were many Flying-type Pokémon, flying rapidly and performing all sorts of flashy aerial stunts.

Especially prominent were the tall frames erected everywhere, topped with forked hooks.

*Clang!*

These Flying-type Pokémon were holding a small ring in their mouths. As they flew, they would steadily toss the ring onto the forked hooks, making a crisp sound.

"What is this...?"

Ash and his companions looked on with curiosity. It seemed to be some kind of Pokémon sport.

There was even a dog fighting competition on Mt. Chimney, so Ash wasn't surprised to see some strange flying competition now.

"This is the Pokémon Ring Competition. Verdanturf Town holds one every year."

Just then, a rather familiar voice came from behind them.

The tone was gentle and weak, which made Ash and his friends subconsciously turn their heads.

Before them was a green-haired youth with a frail build.

He wore light-colored long-sleeved trousers, but the clothes looked spacious and loose on him.

On his shoulder perched a plump, blue little bird, its snow-white, cotton-like wings folded at its sides.

"Isn't that Wally?!" Ash said in pleasant surprise, recognizing the youth he had met once in Petalburg City.

Wally had even made a bet with his parents about whether he could go on a journey relying solely on his own strength. Seeing his spirited appearance now, it seemed there was no need to worry at all.

"Hehe, long time no see, all three of you."

Wally smiled gently and greeted them.

"Gu-gu~!"

The Swablu on his shoulder took flight, circled once, and then landed on Wally's head.

He had completed his task long ago, successfully reaching Verdanturf Town within a month.

He had only stayed in this town because the Pokémon Ring Competition was about to be held, and Wally wanted to participate in it.

"But I've already collected three Badges!"

Wally proudly showed Ash his Badges. They were the same types as Ash's, just missing the Badges from the Petalburg Gym and the Dewford Gym.

Although he had waited in Verdanturf Town for a long time, Wally had decided to use the town as a base camp and challenge all three surrounding Gyms.

Just a few months ago, Wally couldn't even have imagined a life like this, traveling and having adventures as a Trainer.

"Oh! Then we'll be opponents in the upcoming Ever Grande Conference!" Ash said without a second thought.

"Opponent..."

Hearing this, Wally's face flushed red with nervousness.

He then tried his best to calm himself, looked at Ash seriously, and appeared full of fighting spirit.

"That's right, we are opponents!"

However, he only had three Badges right now. After this Pokémon Ring Competition was over, he would have to start tackling the Gyms non-stop, or he might not even get the qualification for the League Conference.

Wally led the trio to the local Pokémon Center, explaining the Pokémon Ring Competition to them along the way.

"You've come at the perfect time. The Pokémon Ring Competition is tomorrow. The participating Pokémon aren't limited to Flying-types; any Pokémon that can fly smoothly can join."

Pokémon like Magneton could also participate.

If there really was a Steel and Electric-type Magneton, it would certainly be the most troublesome presence in the entire competition.

"As for the rules, they're simple. When the competition starts, a hot air balloon carrying a ring will rise into the sky. The contestants' Pokémon must fight for the ring in the air and then throw it onto one of the specific forked hooks to win."

Upon hearing this, Ash was immediately interested. It meant he could have a proper aerial battle with other Pokémon!

His Swellow could finally have a good fight!

"It's not that simple. In the outskirts of Verdanturf Town, strong air currents often blow, affecting the movements of Flying-type Pokémon..." Wally explained earnestly. He was practically a semi-resident of Verdanturf Town.

These air currents formed naturally and without any pattern. One could only make a prediction a few seconds in advance by observing subtle details.

Especially at this time of year, the frequency and force of these chaotic air currents were at their highest.

It was for this very reason that Verdanturf Town held the Pokémon Ring Competition at this time every year.

"Is that so?"

Ash nodded repeatedly, then turned his gaze to the other two beside him.

"What do you think, Blue, Brock? Are you going to participate too?"

Brock didn't even have to think about it and decisively refused.

"I don't have my Crobat with me. All the Pokémon I have now are ground-based."

Besides, from what he knew, the most common profession in Verdanturf Town wasn't a Trainer... but a Breeder.

It was a perfect opportunity to have a good exchange with the locals about the finer points of Pokémon breeding.

He had already seen several Female Pokémon Breeders on the way here.

"A Flying-type Pokémon?"

Blue, on the other hand, frowned slightly, her mind racing.

She did have a Flying-type Pokémon with her and was perfectly able to participate.

But using Moltres to participate in the Pokémon Ring Competition...

Wouldn't that be a bit of a problem?
