Chapter 1036: Dog Fighting Competition

2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander (Author Name)

Soon, the trio reached the end of the stone staircase and stepped onto a spacious rock platform.

Of course, this didn't mean they had completely crossed Mt. Chimney and reached the very summit.

Unlike Cinnabar Volcano, the summit of this volcano wasn't just a giant, hollowed-out opening with barely any standing room.

The summit of Mt. Chimney was a flat, open area of rock, surrounded by hard, reddish-brown stone. It was the size of seven or eight training grounds, practically a spacious plaza.

The volcano's crater was on the other side of the platform, a slightly raised opening.

Peeking over the edge from that spot, one could see the magma inside.

However, Mt. Chimney wasn't an active volcano; it hadn't erupted in years. The surface of the magma inside was covered by a layer of blackish-brown cooled magma rock, so no churning, boiling lava was visible.

Not only that, but a considerable number of people had already gathered in the plaza on Mt. Chimney's summit.

"Woof woof!!"
"Ruff!!"

Compared to the noisy chatter of the humans, the sound of dogs barking and yelping was much louder.

Ash focused his gaze and saw several dozen people around, all dressed differently.

But each person was accompanied by a canine-like Pokémon.

Houndour, Growlithe, Electrike... Of course, the most numerous were Poochyena and Mightyena, the region's common canine Pokémon.

"Are these people walking their dogs...?"

Before Ash could finish, he saw a large banner hanging at the highest point of the plaza.

"Mt. Chimney Summit Cup, the Eighth Annual Dog Fighting Competition!"

Ash and the others: ???

They hold competitions for dog walking now?

But seeing the fiery gazes and brimming battle intent of the people and their dogs, it seemed this competition was highly regarded among this crowd.

"Hey, hey, hey!! Get the hell out of the way! Can't you see last year's Champion has arrived!?"
"Hey, a good dog doesn't block the path!"

Just then, another group of people climbed up the stone staircase on the other side. Clad in aqua-blue attire, they all looked like a bunch of pirates and thugs.

Surrounded by several Team Aqua Grunts, the leader was a skinny man with a blue headband tied around his bald head.

With his hands in his pockets, he swaggered with an arrogant gait. He was short and wiry, but gave off a gloomy and dangerous vibe.

Beside him followed a Mightyena with a glossy coat. Its grayish-brown body was covered in black fur, and it bared its teeth, looking quite ferocious.

The arrival of Team Aqua clearly quieted the noisy venue.

"It's the Team Aqua high-ranking executive, Dee!"
"Last year's Dog Fighting Competition champion!"
"Is that the Mightyena he relied on? It really looks the part!"

The crowd murmured amongst themselves.

Unlike Team Magma's executives, who were named after "Fire-something," Team Aqua's executives used single characters as their codenames.

"Hey, hey, hey!! All of you better open your eyes!!"
"Keep your mutt on a leash, don't let it get so scared it pisses itself, haha!!"

While Ash and his companions watched on in confusion, another group of people came up the stone staircase on the other side, making an equally noisy and arrogant entrance.

This time, they were clad in fiery-red, hooded uniforms with small red-and-black horns on either side of the hoods.

It was Team Magma.

And surrounded by these Team Magma Grunts was a pot-bellied fat man, his entire body like a large orb.

He had a neat crop of short hair that stuck up, tiny, squinted eyes, and walked with the same haughty stride.

Beside him, there was also a Mightyena with a glossy coat.

"As expected, Team Magma came this year, too?"
"That's the Team Magma high-ranking executive, Huoyan, right?"
"That Mightyena... I think it was last year's runner-up."

The contingents from Team Aqua and Team Magma completely ignored everyone around them, walking straight to the center of the summit plaza to face off.

"Well, well, if it isn't last year's loser? You still dare to put on airs in front of me?"

Dee was the first to taunt coldly.

"Hmph, if you hadn't cheated last year, there's no way your little mutt could've won!"

Huoyan retorted without holding back.

"Woof-grr...!"
"Woof-grr...!"

The Mightyena beside both men also bared their teeth with threatening expressions.

The figures of Dee and Huoyan—one rail-thin, the other a portly, round man—made for a striking image.

What Ash and his companions didn't know was that Team Magma and Team Aqua had always been at odds. But constant bickering and fighting wasn't a solution.

Thus, the Dog Fighting Competition had become the flashpoint for the two organizations.

Every year on this day, Team Magma and Team Aqua would inevitably send people to participate in the Dog Fighting Competition, using their own specially-bred dogs to crush their rival's spirit.

And they didn't use any other dogs, just the most simple and unadorned Dark-type Mightyena!

"Hey, hey, hey!! Registration closes in ten minutes! Any participants who want to enter the Dog Fighting Competition, please hurry up!!"

Beside the crowd was a table where three identical Officer Jennys sat in a row.

The organizers of the Dog Fighting Competition... Huh, they're the official police.

The Dog Fighting Competition was originally intended as a friendly match between police dogs. Gradually, it evolved into a gathering for dog-loving passersby, and now it had degenerated into a battleground for Team Magma and Team Aqua.

However, a competition like this could also effectively ease the direct friction between the two organizations. Plus, since quite a few passersby still participated, Officer Jennys would climb Mt. Chimney every year to act as referees for the event and maintain order.

But no one approached at Officer Jenny's call. They were all old-timers at this dog event and had completed their registration long ago.

"The weather is so hot! The three Officer Jennys must need someone to fan them!!"

Brock's eyes lit up. Panting with his tongue out, he shot over to the three Officer Jennys' side, fawning over them.

"A Dog Fighting Competition? I want to join!!"

Blue also ran over to register, cheering excitedly.

With a flip of her palm, a small, pink dog appeared with a ferocious expression... It was the Snubbull she had caught in the Johto Region.

Seeing that both his companions had dogs, Ash hesitated.

Hmm, a Dog Fighting Competition. It does seem kind of interesting.

Of the Pokémon he had with him, if he had to pick one that could be considered a canine Pokémon...

With this thought, Ash had an idea and slowly took out a Poké Ball.

He held it in his hand and asked, speaking to the ball:

"What do you say, Entei? Do you want to participate in this Dog Fighting Competition?"

Legendary Pokémon have extremely high intelligence and can understand their Trainer's words even from inside a Poké Ball.

Bzzzzzz!!

The moment these words left his mouth, the Poké Ball began to vibrate wildly, as if a volcano were about to erupt.

*Sizzle!*

Finally, the entire shell of the Poké Ball became as scorching hot as magma, popping right out of Ash's palm.

At that moment, the Entei inside the Poké Ball was so angry it nearly lost its composure.

Damn it, I'm a flame lion!!

Ash: ?

Is there a difference between a lion and a dog?
