Chapter 1032: Lavaridge Gym, vs. Flannery! (Part 2)

Whoosh!!
A scorching, golden-white beam shot down diagonally from the sky, with no charge-up time whatsoever.
It was as if the attack came directly from the sun itself.
"Hehehe...!"
Sensing immense danger, Corphish struggled instinctively.
To ensure the Solar Beam would hit, Magcargo had intentionally left half of its body exposed. But even so, Corphish couldn't break free, only managing to work a pair of its pincers loose.
"Corphish, use Dig now!!"
At that moment, hearing the instruction from the side, the panicked Corphish suddenly snapped back to its senses, its gaze hardening.
That's right. It couldn't escape forward, backward, left, or right... but the ground below was completely open.
Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch!!
Corphish swung its pincers downward, instantly burrowing deep into the ground.
BOOM!!
The Solar Beam, a step too late, missed its target and struck the ground in front of Magcargo, blasting a large pit but failing to hit its mark.
"Damn it, that was so close!"
Flannery frowned. If that strike had landed, the Corphish would have been on its last legs, if not outright defeated.
"In that case, be careful of its attack when it resurfaces, and be ready to fire a Solar Beam at any moment!!" Flannery quickly commanded, on high alert.
"Cargo!"
Magcargo constantly scanned the surrounding ground. The instant there was any strange movement, it could instantly fire a Solar Beam.
However, this was precisely the situation Corphish wanted.
Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch!!
In the next moment, Corphish was nowhere to be seen, but the ground around Magcargo's body began to bulge with shifting mounds of earth, moving about rapidly.
Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch!!
Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch!!
The mounds moved without any discernible pattern, darting around chaotically.
Corphish was now going full-throttle, not emerging from the ground but simply scrambling around underground, turning the entire battlefield floor into a messy, churned-up patch of soil.
"Cargo!"
This scene began to throw Magcargo, situated on the surface, into disarray.
Its eyes darted about, trying to capture its opponent's trajectory for a predictive Solar Beam.
But the simple-minded Corphish didn't even know where it was going next itself, let alone having its pattern discovered.
"Hehehehe~!!!"
Corphish's excited laughter echoed from all around, as if in mockery, causing Magcargo's composure to unravel.
Especially amplified by the underground echoes, it sounded as if Corphish were on all sides.
"Cargo!!"
In the end, it was Magcargo who couldn't hold on any longer. It finally locked onto one of the tracks and initiated an attack.
WHOOSH-BOOM!!
A Solar Beam shot out, blasting a large crater where one of the mounds had been.
But there was no sign of a Corphish in the crater.
Pshoo!
The next instant, a fiery-red figure burst from the earth, appearing not far to Magcargo's side.
It was the familiar, upward-swinging pincer, slashing straight toward its target.
Under Sunny Day, Solar Beam indeed didn't need to charge... but there was still a cooldown between one Solar Beam and the next.
SWOOSH-WHAM!!
The Dig-Crabhammer struck Magcargo squarely in the back, the powerful force sending it flying several meters.
Super effective!
"It's over! Use Bubble Beam!!"
As Magcargo was sent flying, Corphish, having just swung its heavy pincer, once again opened its own pincers wide.
Tatatatata!!
In an instant, countless blue bubbles roared out, strafing Magcargo's body like a machine gun and bursting on impact.
KABOOM!!
A final explosion erupted, filling the air with smoke and dust.
Magcargo fell swiftly from mid-air, landing on the ground with its eyes spinning.
"Magcargo is unable to battle! Corphish wins!"
Mr. Moore announced in a serious tone.
But by now, Mr. Moore's expression had also turned grave. He could tell that this Corphish's level wasn't particularly high, yet it had been keeping Flannery suppressed the entire battle.
"Another incredible trainer."
His gaze shifted to Ash behind him, and Mr. Moore raised an eyebrow, his mind flashing back to when Yuki and May came to challenge the gym.
Had he been out of the loop for too long? Had the world outside changed so much? How could three trainers on the level of prodigies show up in a row?
As a former Fire-type Elite Four member, Mr. Moore's judgment was still sharp.
Yes, it wasn't that Flannery was too weak, but that her opponent was too strong.
But as the referee, he couldn't very well smile and console her after seeing her get swept... the nepotism would be too obvious!
So, Mr. Moore could only choose to watch with a stern expression.
In his heart, however, he was silently cheering for his granddaughter.
"But today..."
Although Mr. Moore was reluctant to say it, it looked very likely that Flannery was about to get swept 3-0 again today.
"Tsk, can't a slightly weaker trainer show up?"
Mr. Moore's brows furrowed deeply.
Back when he was a Gym Leader accepting challenges, the challengers' skill levels were always uneven. How was it that right after he retired, he got a string of three unreasonably strong trainers?
"Return, Magcargo..."
Flannery's face was ashen. She had also noticed her grandpa's fluctuating expression, and her heart was in even greater turmoil.
"Damn it! I even specifically mentioned to Ash that I was already numb from being swept... Did this person completely not understand what I meant?!"
Flannery couldn't help but direct her shame and anger at the youth across from her.
Although it was shameful to go easy...
Since you clearly have the strength to get the badge, you should at least give a new Gym Leader some face!
But Ash's thoughts at this moment were very simple.
"Well, I can't be worse than Yuki, anyway."
As for her feelings... he was just a passing trainer and wasn't too familiar with this Gym Leader.
These were all trials on her future path to becoming a great Gym Leader.
In the end, however, Flannery clenched her fists, her expression tightening.
"No, I still have one more. I can still turn this around!!"
She still had one ace she hadn't sent out... and with the boost from the surrounding volcano, this Sunny Day could last for a while longer...
"Come on out, Torkoal!!"
Flannery flipped her hand, and finally, she sent out a sturdy Torkoal.
Its physique was about the same as Ash's, the only difference being that the center of its shell had a black hole for spouting smoke—and hadn't been forcibly modified by someone into the shape of Groudon's head.
"Ooh~ A Torkoal?"
Seeing this, Ash's eyes lit up. This was a good chance to study Torkoal's battle style.
"Koaal!"
In the spectator stands, his Torkoal had a similar expression, full of anticipation.
"Hehe~!!"
Standing on the battlefield, Corphish brandished its two large pincers, looking triumphant.
Never mind anyone else, it had definitely had its fill of battling today.
