Chapter 1028: Capturing Torkoal
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander
Lavaridge Town.
This was a small town nestled at the foot of Mt. Chimney.
Its proximity to the volcano blessed the town with numerous hot springs, making it a famous city for tourism and leisure. However, there weren't many young or middle-aged people in the city; most of its residents were elderly folks living out their retirement and soaking in the hot springs.
"Nurse Joy! Please, you have to save this Torkoal!"
Carrying the Torkoal, which had suffered a massive internal injury, Ash and his group finally reached the Pokémon Center in Lavaridge Town.
"This Torkoal..."
Nurse Joy seemed to recognize it. A Chansey beside her pushed a stretcher, quickly taking the Torkoal inside for emergency treatment.
After a short while, the emergency light turned from red to green, and only then did Ash and his two companions breathe a sigh of relief.
You can always trust Nurse Joy.
"It's nothing serious now. It just needs to rest for a while."
Nurse Joy advised them through the transparent glass door of the sickroom.
"But, if I recall correctly, isn't this the Torkoal that was bullied by Team Magma?"
This sentence immediately caught Ash's attention, and he quickly asked for more details.
"Actually, I don't know that much... Back then, a few thugs from Team Magma forcibly carved the mark of Groudon, the God of the Land, onto this Torkoal's shell and paraded it through Lavaridge Town," Nurse Joy said, trying hard to remember.
Team Magma is an extremist organization that worships Groudon, the God of the Land. They wish they could paint a portrait of Groudon's head everywhere.
"So, is it because of Groudon's mark that it gets rejected by other wild Pokémon?" Brock frowned to himself.
Among wild Pokémon, the phenomenon of discrimination and exclusion against special individuals does indeed exist.
For instance, an overweight Pikachu might never find a mate within its own group.
"Um, the problem isn't the mark. There really does seem to be some kind of issue with this Torkoal... but I don't know much about it. You could try asking at the Lavaridge Gym; they specialize in Fire-types," Nurse Joy said.
Ash: "?"
Her riddle completely baffled Ash and the others.
Besides being a crybaby, it doesn't seem to have any other problems, does it?
"After that, those people from Team Magma were driven away by Mr. Moore, and then this Torkoal returned to Mt. Chimney alone... until you brought it here today."
"Mr. Moore?"
It was another name he had never heard before. Ash asked again.
"Oh~ Mr. Moore, he's a big shot, but you kids wouldn't know about him~" an old woman cooling off in the Pokémon Center suddenly interjected.
Ash and his friends: "?"
Seeing their confused expressions, Nurse Joy continued to explain:
"Mr. Moore is the Lavaridge Gym Leader... uh, but I heard that half a month ago, he entrusted the Gym to his granddaughter."
The succession of a Gym is often hereditary.
The previous Gym Leader will usually choose their own junior or confidant in advance to inherit their will. Only when they truly can't find anyone will the League officials appoint someone.
Seeing their "Is that all?" expressions, Nurse Joy continued:
"And that's not all. In his youth, Mr. Moore was an Elite Four member of our Hoenn Region. But he retired over a decade ago, so not many of the current trainers know his name."
"A former Elite Four member?!"
Sure enough, as soon as she said this, Ash's eyes lit up.
It seemed this Lavaridge Gym was no simple matter, to think it was hiding a master of the Elite Four's caliber.
He just wondered if this former Elite Four member was still at the Gym.
Ash was eager to set off and challenge the Lavaridge Gym immediately. A Fire-type Gym—this time, his Corphish could really show its stuff!
"Ah..."
But looking at the Torkoal still lying weakly on the bed in the sickroom, Ash sighed again, forcibly suppressing his impulse.
He couldn't just leave this little turtle here, could he?
"Nurse Joy, could you also heal my other Pokémon, please?"
Entrusting his Pokémon to Nurse Joy, Ash then gently pushed open the room door and went inside.
"Koal?"
Seeing someone enter, Torkoal slightly raised its head.
Unlike a Squirtle, which seems to have no neck at all, Torkoal has a long, slender neck, encircled by an iron ring.
There were also iron rings around the ankles of its sturdy limbs, which looked like devices to assist in generating power.
"Are you okay, Torkoal?"
Ash reached out and patted its head. Although this one was a Fire-type, it lacked the typical hot-tempered nature of Fire-type Pokémon. Instead, its temperament was very gentle, and it didn't resist his touch in the slightest.
If it had been his Squirtle back in the day, a Bite would have already landed on him.
"Koooaaal!!"
Feeling the kindness radiating from Ash, the Torkoal actually started to cry again, tears gushing out like a fountain.
Seeing this, Ash slowly took out one of his Poké Balls and held it in front of Torkoal.
"How about it? Since the Pokémon here don't like you, why don't you come travel with me?"
Hearing this, Torkoal's eyes, which had been half-closed like an old man's, suddenly snapped open, clearly moved by the offer.
"Koal..."
But then, it pulled its head back, as if hesitating out of caution about something.
"I've heard that there seems to be some kind of problem with your body. But I don't care about any of that. As long as we fight side-by-side, we can break through any difficulty!" Ash exclaimed in a low voice, his tone full of infectious passion.
He had never heard of a Pokémon having some kind of major, dangerous problem. If there really was a big issue, then there was only one possibility.
This Torkoal had some kind of incredible power hidden within it!
Feeling the heat constantly radiating from its shell gave Ash a sensation like sunlight.
"Koooaaal!!"
And after hearing Ash say all that, the Torkoal began to cry again, the fountain of tears it sprayed nearly causing Pikachu to slip and fall.
However, it finally managed to stop its tears and, mustering its courage, nodded at Ash.
Its head poked out and touched the Poké Ball in Ash's hand.
*Swish!*
The next moment, Torkoal turned into a beam of red light and was sucked into the ball. The capture was completed without even a single shake.
Evidently, both Ash's act of carrying it all the way to the Pokémon Center and the words he spoke to it just now had caused Torkoal's affection for him to be maxed out.
"I caught a Torkoal!!"
Ash gripped the Poké Ball tightly, his gaze firm.
If there really was some kind of problem, the Lavaridge Gym should be able to give him an answer.
