Chapter 135

Chapter 1022: The Rock Titan, Regirock!

Author: Samsung Charmander

BOOM!!

After flying through the sky for a while, Ash and Pikachu finally turned into a shooting star, crashing violently toward the ground.

PFFT!

However, they were still in the middle of a desert. The soft sand cushioned their fall, and other than ending up half-buried headfirst, they didn't suffer any major injuries.

"Pika!!"

The searing sand made Pikachu cry out, and he abruptly shot out of the ground.

"Pika, Pika!"

But the searing sand was everywhere, offering nowhere safe to stand. It forced Pikachu to perform a frantic tap dance on the scorching surface.

Ash, meanwhile, pushed himself up and pulled his head out of the sand.

"Pika."

Pikachu finally found a place to land, settling back onto Ash's shoulder and breathing a sigh of relief.

"Are you okay, Pikachu?"

The pair looked at each other, dusty and disheveled, and shook the sand off themselves.

With the support of his shoe soles, Ash could walk on the sand without much trouble.

Well, he could manage barefoot too.

"But this place..."

Ash looked around. After getting thrashed by that family of Flygon, he had no idea where he'd ended up.

The rented board and that Yanma were nowhere to be seen. He'd probably have to pay for them later, right?

He took out his Pokedex and carefully checked his location on the map.

Ash discovered he had been blown to the southernmost part of this desert—any further and he would have been blown out of it entirely.

Surprisingly, however, perhaps because he was far from the volcano to the northwest, the temperature here wasn't as ridiculously scorching as before.

Pikachu's tap dance had been, more or less, a bit of an act.

"I should head back first..."

With that, Ash was about to head north to reunite with his companions.

Sshhh...!

But he hadn't gone far when, amidst the sandstorm, a raised rocky mound caught Ash's attention.

It was a mound of earth as large as a house, standing starkly in the middle of his path forward, with a crack forming a cave entrance.

He hadn't even gotten close when a rather ancient and ethereal aura drifted out from within.

"Mirage Tower?"

Ash was slightly taken aback. Wasn't the Mirage Tower supposed to be a five or six-story stone tower? This thing was two stories high at most.

Without a second thought, since he had encountered a mysterious building, Ash naturally had to go inside and investigate.

Besides, for some reason, this aura felt strangely familiar...?

Entering the mysterious cave, Ash discovered that it opened into a rather spacious stone chamber.

The surrounding walls were carved with intricate, dotted patterns and ancient murals.

It was somewhat similar to the stone chamber he had entered in the Granite Cave on Dewford Town.

"Someone else is here?!"

Ash also noticed the presence of another person in the stone chamber.

It was a Hiker in work clothes with short, dark green hair. He had his back to Ash, making it impossible to see his face.

In front of him was a blue-black, catfish-like Pokémon with a yellow belly and two long, slender, curved whiskers on either side of its mouth.

As for the Pokémon the man and the fish were confronting...

"BEEP BEEP!!"

A familiar, urgent telegraph-like sound rang out. A powerful gale instantly whipped through the stone chamber, making the ground tremble and blowing the sand about.

And in the deepest part of the stone chamber stood a Pokémon made entirely of gray rock. Its body was uneven, covered in countless irregular, rock-like incisions.

Its face was an "H"-shaped pattern of dots, and its sides were massive rock arms, with reddish-brown rock forming what would be its biceps.

"Pfft! The Regis?!"

Ash blurted out.

From any angle, this Pokémon looked too much like his own Regieleki.

Looks like it must be Regirock.

Ash quickly pulled out his Pokedex.

"Dee dee. Regirock, also known as the Rock Titan. A Pokémon that was sealed away by humans in the past. If its body is damaged in battle, it will seek out new rock to repair itself. Therefore, its body contains no brain or heart."

The Pokedex not only identified Regirock, but also reported on the Pokémon in front of the Hiker.

"Dee dee. Whiscash, a Water- and Ground-type. When it goes on a rampage, it can trigger a massive earthquake. Its long, slender whiskers can also sense the occurrence of natural earthquakes."

One could say that Whiscash's two types completely countered Regirock.

"Whoa, so he's trying to capture Regirock?!"

Ash's eyes lit up, and he subconsciously took a step forward, wanting a closer look.

Who would have thought he'd stumble upon something so exciting?

To be able to capture a legendary Pokémon... this Hiker, whom he could only see from the back, must be an incredible Trainer!

Swoosh! Swoosh!

But just as Ash was about to take that step, the air in front of him flickered with afterimages, and the faint sound of an insect's buzzing wings could be heard.

Swoosh!!

The next moment, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a sharp flash of white light, like a blade striking swiftly, its target aimed straight for his eyeball.

Ash's hand shot up out of muscle memory, striking out like a lightning-fast snake, poised to grab the blade directly.

Swoosh...!

But when he closed his palm, he found he had grabbed nothing but air.

"Such incredible speed, it evaded my grasp..."

Ash couldn't help but marvel. He narrowed his eyes, and only then did he spot a rather peculiar existence in the air before him.

It was a black, cicada-like Pokémon with a golden head and red eyes. In front of it were two sharp, hooked claws.

Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!

Its wings vibrated at a high frequency, constantly flashing into view in every corner of the air.

"This is..."

Ash quickly pulled out his Pokedex.

"Dee dee. Ninjask, a Bug- and Flying-type Pokémon. The evolved form of Nincada. The (former) fastest Pokémon. Because it moves at such a high speed, it is sometimes difficult to see."

The Pokedex reported.

It then dawned on Ash. So this was the Pokémon renowned as the fastest, the one his Regieleki had surpassed.

Its speed was truly incredible.

And those dangerous, hooked claws... was it warning him not to take another step forward?

Seeing this, Ash didn't try to press forward. Instead, he found a suitable spot and, along with Pikachu, settled in to watch the show from the back.

Some Trainers really hate it when others interfere while they're trying to capture a wild Pokémon, but there shouldn't be a problem with just watching, right?

He was eager to see if this man's strength was enough to capture Regirock.

Meanwhile, the Ninjask blocking his path was in utter turmoil. What in the world was this human? This Shedinja-like being... he had almost been caught, bare-handed!
