Chapter 1020: Mirage Tower
2024-05-15 Author: Samsung Charmander
On Route 111, north of Mauville City, Ash and his two companions continued their journey.
This was a semi-desert path. Although not completely deserted, it was extremely lacking in greenery, making the walk feel quite oppressive.
"*Phew*... Do you guys feel like the weather's getting hotter?" Ash asked, unable to help himself, with his tongue lolling out.
A scorching sun hung high in the sky, and even the air grew hot. The three of them were merely walking normally, yet they were all soaked in sweat.
"Pika..."
Pikachu panted heavily on Ash's shoulder, nearly dehydrated.
With its bare paws, it didn't dare touch the ground directly, which could scorch it in an instant.
But before they had walked much further, several people hurried past them, striding briskly forward as if there was something good up ahead.
"These guys...?"
This wasn't the first group of people to pass them.
According to the map, there should only be a nameless desert ahead. Was there something special there?
Ash decided to stop the next group and ask what was going on.
However, before he could act, he was stopped by someone else.
"You three are Trainers... Are you also going to search for the ruins of the Mirage Tower?"
The one who asked was a pretty young woman with neat short hair, dressed fashionably in a cyan off-the-shoulder short-sleeved shirt and white capri pants.
She was holding a microphone, which she had practically shoved up Ash's nose.
Following behind her was a young man carrying a camera, wearing his cap backward. On his short-sleeved shirt was a design of an orange Pokémon with lightning.
The camera lens was pointed right at the three of them.
"Mirage Tower?"
Ash and Blue exchanged a glance. It was the first time either of them had heard that name.
"That's right! I, for one, am on my way to that Mirage Tower, in search of a beautiful lady like you!!"
However, Brock's face flushed red as he grabbed the reporter's hand. His behavior startled the reporter and cameraman duo.
"Don't mind him. The weather's too hot, Teacher Brock might be having one of his episodes..."
Blue quickly dragged Brock back with a nervous laugh.
After some discussion, Ash and his companions finally learned what the commotion up ahead was that was drawing so many people to spectate.
"Haha, so you're just passing through by chance? Sorry about that, it's an occupational hazard. I just have to interview any potential target I see~"
The trio and the reporter duo walked side by side as the reporter smiled and introduced herself:
"I'm Marnie, a reporter for Hoenn TV. He's the photographer, Dai. As for the Mirage Tower..."
The Mirage Tower, as legend has it, is a dilapidated rock tower, about five or six stories high, that hides a great ancient secret.
"The legendary Mirage Tower has appeared in the desert ahead... But just as its name suggests, it's like an illusion. To this day, no one has been able to pinpoint its exact location in the desert."
"A great ancient secret?"
Ash nodded. It certainly sounded appealing.
"But recently, someone supposedly discovered the Mirage Tower. It was even a trending topic yesterday, which is why so many people have come to investigate."
As a reporter, Marnie had naturally rushed over with her colleague at the first opportunity to find out what was going on.
"It's just that this Nameless Desert is vast, and a thick sandstorm rages there year-round. It's also home to many dangerous Wild Pokémon, so searching for it isn't simple."
Hearing the words "Wild Pokémon," Ash's eyes lit up.
"Pokémon in the desert? I wonder what kinds there are...?"
Ash and his two companions immediately became interested and decided to go check out the desert first. It was on their way, after all.
The group arrived at the entrance to the Nameless Desert.
"Chatter chatter...!"
At the narrow entrance, a large crowd had already gathered.
Heads bobbed in the crowd and voices buzzed with discussion, but very few people were actually entering the desert.
"It's even hotter here."
Ash wiped the sweat dripping from his chin. He really wanted to send out his Lapras and ask it to spray some water to cool things down.
What was even stranger was that there seemed to be a clear dividing line between the desert's entrance and the outside world.
*Swoosh!!*
Inside, sand and dust swirled and whistled, but as soon as it crossed this dividing line, the swirling sand instantly stopped.
Pikachu tried jumping over the dividing line, landing with one paw on the soft sand.
"Pika—!!"
The next moment, a startled Pikachu leaped three feet into the air, frantically blowing on its hind paw pads.
"Is the sand that hot, too?"
Ash bent down and scooped up some sand, rubbing it in his hand. An intense, scalding heat immediately spread across his palm.
"Huh? It shouldn't have been this hot before, right?"
Marnie also came over and tried poking the sand. The incredibly scalding sensation made her retract her finger instantly.
Wait a minute, has this Youth practiced the Iron Sand Palm or something? How can he just grab sand this hot in his bare hands?!
This wasn't the first time she had reported on the Mirage Tower, but her last trip had yielded no results. This time, Marnie was determined to get some high-quality, firsthand news no matter what.
"Is it because of Groudon?"
The photographer, Dai, who was behind them, looked toward a tall mountain to one side of the desert—a cone-shaped volcano.
Because Groudon left the Hoenn Region, the volcano here has become unstable... Is that why the air in the adjacent desert is so hot, and even the sand can't be touched directly?
He aimed his camera at the surrounding crowd, frantically gathering footage.
However, not everyone was stuck at the desert entrance, unable to enter.
*Bzzzzzz!!*
*Bzzzzzz!!*
A few bursts of high-frequency buzzing from insect wings sounded out, and Ash saw several large dragonflies with green heads and red bodies.
"Yanma?"
Ash recognized them as Pokémon from the Johto Region.
Reins were tied to these Yanma, extending backward and connected to the front of something resembling a surfboard.
Several Hikers stood on the boards, wearing sand-proof goggles.
"Haha! Mirage Tower, the great me is here!!"
"Yeehaw~!!"
*Whoosh!!*
As the Yanma strained, they were dragged into the desert, kicking up clouds of sand.
"There's a way to do it like that?"
Seeing this, the explorers who had been struggling with how to enter the desert all turned their gazes to a small shop next to the entrance.
The Yanma and board equipment those people had were all rented from there.
"Boss, get me one of the bigger Yanma!"
"Do you have any birds? Get me a bird!"
Instantly, countless people crowded together, fighting to rent Pokémon and equipment.
The Mirage Tower was as good as treasure; there was no reason to let others get there first.
*Whoosh!!*
Then, pulled by the Yanma, dozens of people shot into the desert, their figures gradually disappearing into the sandstorm.
