Chapter 106
Chapter 996: Ash vs. Yuki!
May 15, 2024 | Author: Samsung Charmander
The first round of judging concluded, and soon, the avatars of eight individuals appeared on the screen.
"Not bad. They all passed on their first try."
In the audience, Brock nodded to himself. Half of the eight avatars were acquaintances.
There was Ash, Blue, May, and Yuki, as well as that flamboyant green-haired Youth, and Jessie, whom he couldn't bring himself to respect.
The faces of the remaining two Contestants were hard to make out.
Then the screen changed again, and the bracket for the second round, the elimination-style Battle, was revealed.
"The first Battle will be between Contestant Ash from Pallet Town and Contestant Yuki from Littleroot Town!"
The two, in separate Lounges, both tensed. Battle Intent flared in their eyes as they slowly walked towards the Stage.
"Hmph, facing this guy in the first round. I couldn't ask for more!"
The exact same thought was in both of their minds.
Standing on opposite sides of the Stage, their Avatars and corresponding HP Bars had already appeared on the large electronic screen behind them.
"Ooh! Both Contestants have successfully passed the First Round on their very first attempt at a Pokémon Contest! And Contestant Yuki's clever Marshtomp left quite an impression on everyone during the First Round!"
The Host, Vivian, explained, building up the atmosphere.
Yuki: "..."
Dammit, it's strong, not clever!
"Come on out, Marshtomp!!"
He tossed out his Poké Ball, quite irritated.
"I choose you!!"
Ash threw his Poké Ball at the same time. This was a rule of the Pokémon Contest; although you could choose any Pokémon, you couldn't choose your Pokémon second for a Type advantage.
*Poof! Poof!*
After two flashes of red light, the two Pokémon appeared on the Battle Arena.
"As expected, the pressure is intense."
It didn't seem like a big deal on the screen just now, but standing ten meters away, the Pressure from Marshtomp was exceptionally strong.
Its dazed expression, its vacant gaze... yet they seemed to faintly hold the power to see through everything.
Yuki: "..."
His Marshtomp really was just an ordinary one; its appearance was just a little strange.
Having always been with Marshtomp, Yuki didn't feel his was all that different from other lively, jumping Marshtomp.
However, the Pokémon Ash sent out made Yuki's expression turn a little more serious.
As soon as Grovyle appeared, it broke off a twig to hold in its mouth, its gaze subconsciously falling upon the dazed fool before it.
"Cheppa...?"
It seemed to recognize the dumbstruck Marshtomp in front of it, as if it were a former partner from Birch Laboratory.
*Haven't seen you in so many days, has your brain completely broken?*
"Be careful, Grovyle! That guy can probably use the move Detect infinitely!!"
Ash quickly warned.
Although the Grass-type Grovyle had a four times super-effective advantage over Marshtomp, this Youth and his Pokémon were too strange. Ash didn't dare to be careless.
Yuki: "..."
What the hell was infinite Detect? Although, his Marshtomp could indeed use the move Protect.
*Beep!*
As the five-minute Countdown on the electronic screen began to tick, the Battle officially started!
"Take the initiative, Grovyle, use Quick Attack!!"
As he spoke, Grovyle transformed into a sharp arrow of white light and instantly charged forward.
Even though its former partner was now a dimwit, it was still fighting seriously, and it wouldn't go easy on it.
*CLANG!!*
Grovyle's Speed was extremely fast, striking Marshtomp squarely in the chest and sending it sliding back several meters.
"Now, use Icy Wind!!"
Yuki, however, gave the command unhurriedly.
His Marshtomp's Defensive Power wasn't low. It withstood the impact of the Quick Attack and, opening its mouth, spat out a bone-chilling ice mist.
At such close range, Icy Wind was a direct hit.
It's Super Effective!
Grovyle's Speed decreased.
"In that case, let's settle this with Leaf Blade!!"
Ash attacked again without the slightest hesitation.
A Leaf Blade that was four times super-effective, and one that easily results in a Critical Hit... Even if this Marshtomp's Level was high, one, or at most two, Leaf Blades would be enough to decide the outcome!
Grovyle shook its arms, flinging off the frost covering its body, and charged toward Marshtomp once again.
*SWOOSH!!*
Along the way, a pair of green energy scythes extended from its arms, slicing through the air!
Finally, it leaped high, its sharp Leaf Blades coming down in a cross-chop, aimed heavily at Marshtomp's dazed head.
"Use Protect!"
Yuki's voice made Marshtomp react, and it hastily materialized a green barrier in front of itself.
*CLANG!!*
The Leaf Blade slash landed on the Protect barrier, and Grovyle was simply thrown back.
"As long as it doesn't get hit, a Grass-type move is meaningless."
Despite being at an absolute disadvantage in terms of Type, Yuki wasn't flustered in the slightest, completely certain of his victory.
This demeanor also made Ash frown inwardly. When it came to a Battle, the Youth before him was indeed a seasoned veteran...
And that Marshtomp's gaze... it was as if all his tricks were seen through completely, giving him an incredibly strong and mysterious sense of Pressure.
"Then use Leaf Blade continuously!!"
Grovyle understood, once again forming its green scythes and charging forward.
"We'll use Mud Shot!!"
Marshtomp understood, immediately spewing countless brown mud balls from its mouth.
However, the target wasn't Grovyle, but the ground beneath its feet.
*Splat splat splat...!!*
The Mud Shot splattered across the ground, instantly turning the surroundings into a muddy field and preventing Grovyle from using its agile movements.
"Ignore it! Jump and use Leaf Blade!!"
Ash paid it no mind and continued his attack.
With a Leaf Blade that was four times super-effective, he planned to just spam the move until it was over.
"Use Protect!"
However, as Yuki's voice rang out, the green barrier raised by Marshtomp once again repelled Grovyle's Leaf Blade.
The rhythm of using Protect, then not, then Protect again... It was clear this guy had grasped the very essence of the move.
"Marshtomp, use Ice Punch!!"
Taking advantage of the gap between moves, this time Yuki even took the initiative to attack.
Out of the 18 Types, Marshtomp has only one Type weakness. To deal with Grass-type Pokémon it was weak against, Marshtomp had mastered several Ice-type moves.
*CRACK!*
A blue fist, radiating an icy aura, smashed towards Grovyle without any flair.
"Use Leaf Blade!!"
Grovyle didn't retreat a single step either, meeting the opponent's attack head-on.
The sharp Leaf Blade swung, and a green light flashed.
*CLANG-BOOM!!*
The collision of their moves erupted with a violent tremor, sending shockwaves rolling out.
But it was obvious that in terms of raw Power, Marshtomp was significantly stronger.
"Cheppa...!"
Grovyle was forced back, sliding continuously and carving a long scratch on the smooth floor.
*"Hiss..."*
"These two..."
Ash and Yuki's high-intensity offense and defense had left the surrounding Audience and the three Judges completely stunned.
Wait a minute, you two... this is a Pokémon Contest, not a normal Trainer Battle!!
"That guy..."
Brock, sitting in the first row, fixed his gaze on Yuki, frowning to himself.
Ash, caught up in the middle of it, might not have realized it, but as a Spectator, he could see it clearly from the stands.
He had been completely drawn into Yuki's Rhythm, and it seemed Ash hadn't noticed that crucial point yet...
