Chapter 32: That Voice.
2023-04-04 Author: Fu Hejun
Within the lush jungle.
Zhu Zhuqing found herself surrounded by a Soul Saint leading six Soul Kings and seven Soul Venerates, trapped in the greatest crisis of her life!
Just by looking at the lineup, she knew her older sister had deployed all her forces, determined to kill her this time.
In the past, the people sent to hunt her down were, at most, led by a Soul King with a few Great Soul Masters. Now, they had even mobilized a Soul Saint. This was clearly the maximum manpower Zhu Zhuyun could currently command.
As expected, after the future video revealed what was to come, reality had become filled with uncertainty.
Her dear older sister would certainly not allow her to become a disciple of a Limit Douluo, as she did in the original future. She would definitely try every possible means to stop her.
And the best way to do that was to kill her, once and for all.
Zhu Zhuqing felt an unspeakable bitterness in her heart. She truly didn't know whether to thank the Q&A for broadcasting the future and giving her hope, or to resent it for revealing the future, which plunged her once-bright life into an unprecedented crisis...
"Second Miss, surrender."
The scar-faced Soul Saint leading the group calmly said with his arms crossed over his chest, "That way, I can give you a quick end. You'll die without any pain, not hurting a bit."
"Oh? You've never died, so how do you know it doesn't hurt at all?" a voice suddenly interjected.
The scar-faced Soul Saint immediately blurted out, "Which blind fool—" He stopped mid-sentence.
He finally registered it. Where did that voice come from?
"Who's there?!"
The scar-faced Soul Saint immediately became alert as if facing a formidable enemy. Seven soul rings on his body glowed brightly, and the phantom of a large brown bear appeared behind him, merging into his body. Instantly, his body began to expand, growing brown fur as his palms turned into bear paws... In a flash, he had actually transformed into a giant brown bear!
He had activated his Martial Soul True Body without a second thought. It was clear he was truly frightened by the person who spoke from the shadows.
The other assassins also became vigilant, scanning their surroundings as if facing a formidable enemy. Yet, they found no trace of anyone else, as if the voice that had suddenly appeared was merely an illusion.
'This voice... it sounds so familiar.'
Zhu Zhuqing recalled the voice from earlier, an inexplicable sense of familiarity washing over her. It was as if she had heard it somewhere before.
But where? Exactly where had she heard it?
Sometimes, when one focuses too much on something, they unconsciously overlook it. Zhu Zhuqing was currently in this state.
"Run!"
The scar-faced Soul Saint's expression suddenly changed drastically. He had already recognized who the owner of that voice was.
He immediately turned and began to flee for his life without a second thought.
The other assassins also recalled Zhu Zhuyun's instructions before they left: If my younger sister has already met that person, you must abandon the mission and flee for your lives!
Thus, all the assassins immediately scattered in multiple directions, fleeing for their lives.
Seeing the assassins who had previously trapped her suddenly scatter like birds and beasts, abandoning their hunt in a panic, Zhu Zhuqing blinked in confusion.
She wondered about the background of the voice's owner. To think that merely a voice, without even showing a face, could scare them into scattering and fleeing.
...
After the assassins fled in disarray, an inexplicable silence descended upon the scene.
"Creak! Creak..."
At that moment, a gust of wind blew through, carrying with it the rustling sound of tree branches and leaves.
"May I ask..."
Zhu Zhuqing already had a guess about the identity of the owner of that hidden voice. Excitement welled up in her heart, and to leave a good impression on her future teacher, she couldn't help but cautiously speak up, "Which senior offered a helping hand from the shadows? Could you please show yourself?"
...
There was no reply. The surroundings were silent.
However, Zhu Zhuqing keenly sensed a gaze from the shadows fixed upon her. That sharp, almost tangible gaze gave her the illusion that she was wearing no clothes at all.
This filled her with both shyness and a sense of indignation, as if she had been completely laid bare. Instinctively, she tensed her body, which only made her curves more alluring.
"Phew..."
Zhu Zhuqing suddenly let out a sigh of relief. The sensation of being watched had disappeared. Presumably, the person in the shadows had already left.
But was the owner of that hidden voice truly her future master from the video?
If so, why was he unwilling to meet her? If not, then who was that person in the shadows?
Zhu Zhuqing couldn't figure it out; there were too few clues at the moment.
Her mind was a mess, and she stood still for a while. Only then did she break free from her turmoil, realizing that since that person had left, all she could do was follow her original plan: head to Shrek Academy and find that cowardly runaway fiancé, Dai Mubai.
As for whether she would be fortunate enough to become that person's disciple, as in the future video... she would have to leave it to fate.
With that thought, Zhu Zhuqing adjusted her mood and continued her journey toward Soto City.
Meanwhile, in the shadows, Ye Cheng, who had not departed, watched her retreating figure with a meaningful gaze. In fact, he had deliberately allowed Zhu Zhuqing to feel his gaze; otherwise, if he had intended to conceal it, how could Zhu Zhuqing, with her meager cultivation, possibly detect the hidden surveillance of a Limit Douluo?
As for why Ye Cheng didn't show himself, besides feeling that it wasn't the right time yet, the main reason was to create a sense of mystery and to string Zhu Zhuqing along. Otherwise, a master who so eagerly presented himself would seem too cheap.
Besides, what senior expert would take a disciple without first testing their character, aptitude, and comprehension?
Since Ye Cheng had chosen to fabricate such a video, he had to maintain this persona. Otherwise, rushing to accept a disciple would be too demeaning.
And beyond that, there was another reason.
This little cat, Zhu Zhuqing, still harbored illusions about her irresponsible fiancé, Dai Mubai. She believed he had fled the Star Luo Empire merely to escape danger and find a place where he could cultivate in peace, not that he had given up all hope of victory and decided to throw his life away, living in drunken excess in some remote corner to enjoy himself before his death.
Therefore, if he were to take the little cat as a disciple, Dai Mubai would be an insurmountable obstacle. Only by letting her become completely disillusioned with that irresponsible scoundrel could Ye Cheng seize the opportunity to... *cough, cough*... to rescue her. To nurture her and help her become a successful, independent woman!
Otherwise, if she still held onto old feelings and remained entangled with that scoundrel, he felt that Zhu Zhuqing would inevitably walk the same old path in the future.
