Chapter 65

Chapter 65: Five Years Pass in a Blink

Aotian paid Gu Yuena no further mind. If she wanted to sleep next to him, so be it. Besides, her scent was rather pleasant.

Just as he was about to close his eyes and rest, he noticed Xiao Wu rolling toward him again, just like before. However, her advance was blocked when she bumped into Gu Yuena.

Noticing Aotian looking at Xiao Wu, Gu Yuena said, "Aotian, Xiao Wu mentioned that she always unconsciously rolls over to your side when she sleeps. I think it must be the aura on your body that attracts her, making her subconsciously want to be near you."

Aotian replied, "That's what I guessed as well."

The aura on his body likely held a special attraction for Soul Beasts. He normally kept his aura restrained, but perhaps a trace of it would leak out unintentionally while he was asleep, which was why Xiao Wu was drawn to him.

Gu Yuena suddenly said, "Aotian, you're so alluring when you're asleep. I really want to just eat you up in one bite."

"If you don't go to sleep right now, I'm throwing you back to your own bed," Aotian said, closing his eyes.

Gu Yuena quickly shut her eyes. After a moment, she quietly opened them again, watching Aotian for a while before closing them in contentment.

"Sleeping next to Senior Aotian is so reassuring," she thought.

...

In the morning, when everyone discovered that both Gu Yuena and Xiao Wu had ended up on Aotian's side of the bed—with Gu Yuena lying shoulder to shoulder with him—their hearts collectively shattered.

Tang San had enjoyed his best night's sleep in a year. When he woke up, he felt refreshed and full of spirit.

But when he saw Aotian and Gu Yuena on the opposite bed, his face darkened.

"Starting today, I will cultivate even harder. I refuse to believe that you can always be stronger than me without even cultivating!" Tang San vowed to himself.

When Aotian awoke, he found Gu Yuena and Xiao Wu still fast asleep.

Gu Yuena's breathing was even, a faint smile gracing her lovely face. Xiao Wu was snuggled up tightly against Gu Yuena, one of her long, fair legs extending from her pants and resting on top of Gu Yuena.

Perhaps because she was a Rabbit, Xiao Wu, at only seven years old, already had legs longer than any ordinary child her age—they were even a bit more slender than Gu Yuena's.

Aotian pulled her loose pant leg down to prevent her from being exposed, then gently shook the two sleepy little girls awake.

Without opening her eyes, Gu Yuena mumbled, "Senior Aotian, why are you shaking me?"

"Sister Na'er, it's time to get up. The Opening Ceremony is soon," Xiao Wu said, sitting up and shaking Gu Yuena as well.

Gu Yuena finally opened her eyes and complained in a low voice, "The amount of sleep Humans get is far too short. I haven't had nearly enough."

Aotian smiled. "Then you can stay here and sleep. Xiao Wu, let's go."

"Fine, I'm getting up!" Gu Yuena climbed out of bed, her face full of reluctance.

The Opening Ceremony was held in the morning, and classes began in the afternoon.

To Aotian's surprise, Gu Yuena was quite interested in these kinds of lessons, listening and learning attentively.

In her own words, to defeat humans, one must first understand them.

Aotian also noticed Tang San asking other classmates about him, but to no avail.

After dinner, the Dean, Grandmaster, and Tang San gathered in the Dean's office.

Grandmaster looked at Tang San and asked, "How did it go, Xiao San? Did you find out which family Aotian comes from?"

Tang San shook his head. "No. Other than Xiao Wu and Gu Yuena, Aotian isn't on good terms with anyone. I couldn't find anything out."

"It's alright, you've already done very well," Grandmaster said comfortingly.

He turned to the Dean. "What about you? Did you find anything?"

The Dean smiled. "I actually did manage to find out a few things."

"Oh? Tell me," Grandmaster said, his interest piqued.

The Dean explained, "The address written on Aotian's Martial Soul Certificate is a place called Shangshui Village. I personally paid a visit to the village and discovered that there are no families with the surname Ao there. None of the villagers had ever heard of Aotian either."

"How can that be?" Grandmaster murmured. "Could his certificate be a fake?"

The Dean nodded. "That's what I thought too. But I carefully examined the seal on the certificate, and it is indeed a genuine Spirit Hall seal. That's what's so strange."

Tang San interjected, "Then Aotian must have colluded with Spirit Hall to create a fake identity to enter Nuoding Academy."

Both Grandmaster and the Dean glanced at Tang San with approval, pleased with his quick thinking.

The Dean continued, "If that's the case, then I can't understand what Aotian wants from my academy. His talent is so good, wouldn't it be easy for him to enroll in Nuoding Academy? Why would he need to create a fake identity?"

"Unless... his identity is one that cannot be exposed to the light, or one he doesn't want people to know," Grandmaster deduced.

"There's more," Tang San added. "Aotian is very wealthy. I heard from other classmates that he once took out a pile of Gold Soul Coins, at least several hundred of them. He also has a Storage Soul Tool."

The Dean nodded. "Another puzzling point. If Aotian is so rich, why is he living in the Work-Study Student Dormitory?"

Grandmaster shook his head; he couldn't figure that part out either.

A rich person living in a dormitory for poor students seemed highly illogical to him, and he couldn't think of a reasonable explanation.

The Dean said, "There are only two ways to find out Aotian's true identity. First, we could investigate at Spirit Hall directly. Since they issued the seal, someone there must know his identity. Second, we could investigate Aotian himself, or we could start with those two girls around him and try to get the information out of them indirectly."

Tang San said, "Since we have proof that Aotian's current identity is fake, should we take this chance to expel him from the Academy?"

"Why would we expel him?" the Dean asked in return. "My humble little academy has nothing worth scheming for. Whatever his purpose is, having a genius student at Nuoding Academy is a good thing."

Grandmaster sighed. "Xiao San, your teacher is only curious about his identity, not trying to do anything to him. Can you still not face the fact that you lost to him? Are you trying to use this to strike back at him?"

Tang San paused for a moment, then lowered his head in shame.

He had spoken without thinking, blurting out the idea of expelling Aotian. It made him seem like a sore loser.

Grandmaster patted Tang San's shoulder. "Xiao San, losing isn't frightening. What's frightening is losing your courage along with it. Doesn't Aotian's existence give you more motivation to cultivate?"

Tang San nodded heavily. "Teacher, I understand. I will definitely cultivate even more diligently and defeat Aotian."

Grandmaster nodded in satisfaction.

"However... your teacher is still interested in his identity. See if you can find anything out from Xiao Wu or Gu Yuena."

"I'll do my best, Teacher," Tang San said.

...

For a period of time afterward, Tang San tried to get close to Xiao Wu and Gu Yuena, hoping to uncover Aotian's identity.

But Gu Yuena was extremely aloof and indifferent toward him, which annoyed Tang San.

Xiao Wu was more enthusiastic, but whenever he asked about Aotian, she would refuse to say a word, leaving Tang San completely at a loss.

In the end, he had no choice but to give up.

...

Time flew by, and five years passed. Aotian had grown into a young man, and Xiao Wu and Gu Yuena into young women; they were all about to graduate from Nuoding Academy.
